St Luke's New Rose Window
St. Luke’s new church building in, Redding, California, has a rather large rose window in
the east wall of the building above the altar. The window is five feet in diameter and there are
smaller circular windows on the north and south walls.
Donald Doutt wanted to give the rose window as a memorial in memory of his wife Betsy.
So, Lynn Smith, Rector Fr. Jeffrey Smith’s wife, looked into purchasing the east rose window
using the traditional stained glass method but because of the size the cost was prohibitive, more
than $60,000. With the help of Fr. Scott Mitchell, Curate, Lynn searched elsewhere and
contacted a firm that does 3D glass printing, a brand new technology.
To begin with the church had to find a design, so the task was given to the ACW to make a
selection. Each woman in St. Luke’s large ACW selected a design that she liked from a book or

the internet and submitted it. The only requirement was that the density of the design had to be
greater than 600 pixels per square inch. Many designs were submitted and there was a vote to
select the final one. The winning selection was submitted by ACW member Lindsay Stroing.
The design was chosen mainly because it went along with the theme of the altar rail kneelers
that the church embroidery guild had just completed - the saints and twelve apostles.
This original design was made by a living artist and is actually a stained glass window in a
United Methodist Church in Florida. The artist, Victor Berthelsdorf, had a studio in Florida at
that time, but has since moved to Oregon. The studio web site has photos of the installation in
Florida and a page with descriptions of the symbols in the window: http://kaleidoscope-
glass.com/NRoseDescript.htm.
St. Luke’s obtained permission from the artist for a one time reproduction and it was
submitted to the design firm SGO in Salem, Oregon. SGO says that “The Stained Glass Overlay
product utilizes a unique process combining multiple materials (glass, lead, multi-layered
mylars, bevels, jewels, etc.) to form a solid piece of decorative glass.”
A special crate was made for the glass window and it was shipped by Fed Ex freight class.
A local glazier had been contacted in April to make certain that he could install such a large
piece. A scaffold had to be built in order to lift the window into place approximately 40 feet
above the altar and the event was watched by many of the ACW, some of who videoed the
event. The glazier later said that he was a “bit nervous” at the time, but all went well. The total
cost came to less than one tenth of the original estimate using the traditional method.

Three New Priests Ordained in Atlantic States Father Gregory L. Koon was ordained to the Priesthood on Saturday, November
21st, at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Lady Lake, Florida, and celebrated his first Mass on
Sunday, November 22nd
, at the same church.
Father Koon was raised an Episcopalian, was confirmed in 1962, and served as an acolyte
until 1969. But when the Episcopal Church began radically changing, Father Koon began
exploring other churches. Eventually he found an Anglican church in Georgia, but he began
maritime work that took him to many places for several years and he could only attend an
Anglican church when and where he found one.
Working his way up the ranks, he obtained his Captain’s License and worked as a free-lance
Captain for 35 years. Some of his positions included Military Sea-Lift Command, two cruise
lines, charter trips in the Caribbean, and commercial work in the Gulf of Mexico oil industry.
Although his work was enjoyable, he always felt that there was something missing.
In 2006 Father Koon was diagnosed with cancer and came to realize that he should take a
different path. He vowed to devote his life to the service of our Lord. This brought him to serve
as a Deacon at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Lady Lake, Florida, and, now, to the Priesthood.

Father Thomas A. Mills was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood in St. Andrew's
Anglican Church in West Point, Georgia, on Saturday, December 5th, 2015, and celebrated his
first Mass on Sunday, December 6th in the same church.
Father Mills was born in Georgia and grew up in Savannah. Baptized as a youngster in the
Baptist Church, he soon joined the Methodist Church. He graduated from LaGrange College
with a B.A. in Art and Design and later earned degrees in Education and Fine Arts (MFA,
Syracuse University). He has taught art, history, and science in public school and community
college and currently teaches art history at Columbus State University. He and his wife Debra
were married in 1975 and have three children and four grandchildren.
Father Mills and his wife left the Methodist Church in 2004 and attended St. George’s
Anglican Church in Columbus, Georgia, a traditional Anglican church in the province of the
Anglican Church in American. However, in 2010, they found the APCK’s St. Andrew’s
Anglican Church and were confirmed there in 2012.
Father Mills attended Emory University’s Candler School of Theology for two terms and
completed courses through St. Joseph of Arimathea Seminary. He was ordained Deacon in
2013.

Father David A. Sweeney was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on Saturday,
November 7th, 2015, and celebrated his first Mass on Sunday, November 8th at St. George's
Anglican Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. Fr. Sweeney will serve as Curate at St. George’s.
Father Sweeney was born in Massachusetts and grew up in several east coast locations as
his father, a Congregational minister, served in various churches. He graduated from Boston
University in English Education and later received an MFA from Brandeis University. In 1971
he met and married his wife Wendy and settled in Boston where their two children, Mark and
Robin, were born. In 1985 the family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina.
Father Sweeney’s secular work has been primarily as a technical writer, trainer, and
instructional designer. Wendy worked as a social worker in the substance abuse field. They
were United Methodists for much of their married life, but became desirous of more liturgically
and sacramentally focused worship. They found St. George’s Anglican Church and became
members in the early 2000’s.
Responding to a call to the ministry, Father Sweeney pursued the Diaconate and was
ordained Deacon on December 11, 2004. As Deacon, he assisted at St. George’s as well as at St.
Alban’s and Christ the King churches. Father Sweeney completed online courses through St.
Joseph of Arimathea Seminary and attended summer sessions when the call to a priestly
vocation became clear.

Two New Deacons Ordained in the Western States In the Diocese of the Western States two men have been ordained to the Diaconate: Deacon
David Jackson and Deacon Bruce Wilcox.
Deacon David Jackson was ordained Deacon on December 21, 2015, St.
Thomas Day, at St. Augustine of Canterbury, Chico, California, by Bishop Donald Ashman.
He was born a “cradle Episcopalian” in 1942 and received his education on the East Coast
including plans, which never materialized, for a PhD in Political Science. He came to California
in 1968, to Butte County in 1978, and to St. Augustine of Canterbury, in November of 2002
after the death of his wife.
Dcn. Jackson was alienated from the Episcopal Church in the early 1990’s. He studied for
the Deaconate for about 5 years before being ordained. Dcn. Jackson commented, “I wish I had
pursued the Deaconate when I was a young man and encourage any young men who have the
calling not to ignore it.”
The day saw a hard rain storm that was much needed in California but made travel difficult.
So Bishop Ashman extended special thanks to the clergy who traveled to Chico to assist in the
ceremonies.

Deacon Bruce Wilcox was ordained Deacon on November 22, 2015, at the Parish
of St. Mark, Portland, Oregon, by Bishop Donald Ashman. He will serve at St. Mark’s.
Dcn. Wilcox grew up in rural Maine. He attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and the
King's College in New York State. He met his wife, Jennifer, in the San Francisco bay area and
they have been married for 23 years. After a few years in Boston they moved to Portland, just a
few blocks from Saint Mark's. They have been attending the Parish of Saint Mark for about ten
years. He had been away from the Church for over twenty years, but he and Jennifer were
attracted to the beauty of the parish church and its liturgy. The language of the 1928 Prayer
Book convinced Dcn. Wilcox to commit to the Faith.
Dcn. Wilcox has been a Postulant for about eight years, serving an "apprenticeship" at three
or more Masses each week and studying Church History and Liturgics under Father Lillegard.
Dcn. Wilcox has noted that, “As a Deacon my studies under Father Lillegard will continue to
help strengthen my role.”
Both Dcn. Wilcox and Jennifer work for a non-profit agency that provides mental health
and addiction treatment. Jennifer is a program manager and Dcn. Wilcox helps train and support
staff on the use of electronic medical records.
