Awards Evening
Christ's Celebrates Success b y Mega n Mc Hugh
On November 27th Christ's annual awards evening took
place at St Mary Magdalene’s Parish Church in the centre of
Richmond. This has always been a big event for the school,
bringing together parents, pupils and ex-students alike. Each
year there is also a guest to give congratulations to the
achieving pupils and this year the place was filled by Sir J ohn
Rowling – head of Pixl group. His speech on hoping for the
future inspired many a person in the audience.
Throughout the night, years 8 to 11 received awards for
progress and ac hievement in each of the school subjects
and all of them received a lovely book relating to the
subject. Not only academic success was highlighted, but theBronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award certificates were given to
the lucky 40-or-so year 11s who completed the award in the
last academic year. Almost all of last year’s year 11 came to
the evening to receive GCSE certificates and to celebrate
moving on to the next stage in life.
2013 has been a fantastic year for Christ’s and the local
community, celebrating the education of young people for
300 years and they’ve not disappointed with their
celebrations, which have brought the entire student and
staff body together. Let us hope the 350th anniversary canbe just as amazing as this one has been.

Forty five year 10 students have started their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.
Students have started this by undertaking a physica l, skill and volunteering activity
which they must keep up for 3-6 months. Students also need to complete these
three sec tions before they will go on their assessed expedition in the summer. It is
also great to see that fifteen year 11 students have started their silver Duke of
Edinburgh Award.

Christ's Commence Construction
Christ’s School welcomed the bulldozers onto site this week as they heralded the start of the buildingprogramme for the new sixth form centre. With a 42 week construction programme ahead the centreshould be ready in time to welcome its first students in September 2014.
Helen Dixon, Headteacher, photographed with staff and students from years 10 and 11 who will beamongst the first to benefit from 11-18 education at the school, is thrilled that the work had begun, commenting “Staff have been working hard to prepare to introduce the post-16 programme for severalmonths already. We will continue this drive throughout this year to ensure we deliver the same excellentstandards at A-level as we do at GCSE”.
Matt Morris, Head of Sixth form, is also delighted to see the building programme starting to take shape, saying “Parents, students and the wider community can now see tangible evidence that the vision we
have been promising is going to become a reality – this is a really exciting time for the school”
The Sixth form will house 180 students when fully enrolled in 2015 and with over 100 students alreadyhaving applied for places to join year 12 when it opens next year, the school is looking forward to adding
a new chapter to its history as it celebrates its 300th
year as a Richmond School.

PTA Fireworks
Despite worrying that the fireworks would be a complete
wash out, we had yet another fantastic event. The
torrential rain did not manage to dampen the spirits of all
who turned up, and with the help of music from the
Christ’s band, the serving of delicious food and drink, finished off with an amazing (and dry) fireworks display, it
was the usual fun, enjoyable evening, and was a huge
success with an attendance of approximately 1,500
people and a profit in excess of £3,000. An event of this
nature requires a huge amount of parent help. Thank
you so much to all our parent volunteers, with a special
thank you to Ian West who has overseen the organisation
of the fireworks for the last three years.
The PTA is aiming to increase fundraising in 2014 and work
towards paying for more items that will direc tly benefit
our children, over and above what the school is
committed to. All parents, teachers, staff and children
have recently been asked to complete a survey to give
us suggestions of items and projects that we may
currently fund, or raise money for in the future. This will be
our main topic of discussion at the next PTA Meeting
which is on Monday 13th J anuary
2014 at 7pm in the music room. If
you would still like to give your
suggestions, please email [email protected] and if
possible, please attend the
meeting. Please also get in
contact if you have experience of
fundraising, corporate sponsorship
and/or applying for grants.

A Christmas Carol was performed on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December. The students worked
incredibly hard over the last 8 weeks on their performance. They had to learn lines and choreography
that was extremely challenging and they did a fantastic job on both nights. I am so proud of all of their
hard work and commitment to the play. It was absolutely lovely to see all of the years interacting with
each other. Well done everyone!
With thanks

Kew Bookshop Book Fair December 3rd
We were delighted that the Kew Bookshop were able to bring such a massive
display of tempting book titles to coincide with the year 8 parents evening.
There was a reasonably brisk trade and of course those purchasing were able tobenefit from expert advice from the Kew Bookshop staff.
We will be considering similar events in the future so look out for news.
Orange Tree Twelfth Night
PSHEE/Careers Day November 26th
This was a massive feat of organisation from a couple of staff but
resulted in an extremely rewarding day for all the pupils involved.
The Year 7s were divided into teams to ‘Design a Sports Glove’. There
was the chance to do an actual design as well as test out some of the
science behind any design such as working out where blisters occur,
which materials last longer and which extra features might be useful to
an athlete. On hand to give expert advice was Daisy Radford from
BAE Systems who has a technological background in material science,
and she also judged the final presentations. She commended
everyone on their work and the imaginative and thoughtful designs.
Year 8s all visited a loca l place of work to find out more about the
variety of employment within a single organisation. We are very
grateful to The Museum of Richmond, Kew Gardens, The Orange Tree Theatre, Twickenham PoliceStation, Holly Lodge, Roehampton University and a number of staff at the Town Hall for throwing open
their doors to us and arranging for the Year 8s to meet different staff and tour the venues. The posters
produced back at school were magnificent and it was evident that a considerable amount of learning
had gone on.
Year 9, 10 and 11 had a variety of targeted activities. Year 9 played the Enterprise board game or a
computer based ‘Real game’ which focuses on career paths. For year 10, there were numerous visitors
from IBM to help give top tips on writing a C.V. and how to present yourself at interviews as well as a
chance to write a CV on the programme in Resource Companion which will be useful for their work
experience. The ECITB Roadshow, performed to all year 10 and selected year 11 was all about careers in
Engineering, and we were also delighted that Karim Al- Abbas from Enlighten Education, who came tohave further sessions with our year 11 focusing on study skills and success at GCSEs.
The Orange Tree Theatre in Education group did two
performances of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ for all the
year 7s. It was a really good show, done in the round with
very imaginative use of props, some slick changes of
character and a chance for audience participation. After the show the students had a chance to discuss
aspects of the play such as what they felt about Malvolio and how he could be portrayed moresympathetically. We are very lucky to have such a professional company on our doorstep.

Year 8 pupils enjoyed at day out at Hampton CourtPalace in November. They spent time looking
around Henry's apartments and the kitchens beforeburning off some energy in the maze. Students alsotook part in one of the pa lace's educationalsessions. Students used historical sources as clues towork out which character from Henry's court wasbeing described. The weather stayed fine andeveryone had a great time.

Spanish Exchange to Madrid 2013
We have had the pleasure of taking 16 students to
Madrid for the yearly Spanish Exchange. The skies
have been blue and the Christmas spirit has been
plentiful. All the children went off with their families
for the weekend and visited art museums, old
Roman towns & Spanish markets. They have got
used to eating lunch at 3.30pm and dinner at
9.30pm with bed time being slightly later than usual!
During the week we visited the “Parque Retiro”, The
Bernabéu footba ll stadium, ate lots of churros con
chocolate, visited an old town called Toldeo withgorgeous architecture and lovely winding streets.
On Wednesday we did our own secret santa whilst tucking into fabulous Spanish tapas! The Christmas
markets and decorations were in every street and were rather spectacular! Overall…fantastic kids & a
beautiful city = a very successful exchange! The adoptive parents were all sad to see our kids leave and
have already requested they return next year.
Have a wonderful Christmas from Miss Taber & Mrs Parmiter

Christ’s Students Enter the Ventura Competition
A group of year 9 and 10 students entered theVentura completion, run by the Design Museum, thisyear. They took their initial ideas to the museum for abrain storming session with industry specialists. Theywere also encouraged to investigate the produc ts inthe shop and consider their target market. The ideas formed a base for further developmentand then they had to present their final ideas to adesign panel of local designers and artists.A group of year 10 students were selected torepresent Christ’s with an original design idea based
on a handy man whose limbs contained screw
drivers and other useful tools to use around thehome. Well done to all students involved and a spec ial mention to those who were selected by thepanel of judges, Luca Barton, Ella Griffith, Ben King and Sophie Fenton.Although we didn't get selected for the final this year the students work showed great c reativity and theprocess will stand them well in future c reative and presentation projec ts.

Living languages at Christ’s school
Year 7 had a taste of how the Spanish people
welcome the New Year at midnight on the 31st
of December. Spaniards take twelve grapes,
one grape for each of the midnight bells. Eachgrape represents good luck for each month of
the year so they must all be eaten before the
bells end. It was not an easy task to complete!
But it was a lot of fun!
And a Happy New Year!!

The year 7 rugby team have continued their winning ways over the last couple of weeks. At the
Cranford college tournament, they dominated in all performances, only suffering a narrow defeat
aga inst a year 8 side. The boys also put on a strong display at the Staines tournament, coming in asrunners up on the day. Their most recent fixture, aga inst Greycourt School, proved to be their toughest
challenge yet. Playing on a full size pitch for the first time and in horrendous conditions, the boys were
under pressure from the kick off. However, a strong scrum and some fantastic individual breaks put
Christ’s into the opposition 22, allowing the ball to release the ball out wide, eventually earning them a
try in the corner. Christ’s were able to apply the same pressure just before half time, giving the backs the
opportunity to execute a carbon copy move, putting Cameron Frasier away for his second try. Christ’s
came away with a 10-0 victory. Special mentions should go to The Captain Louis Trott, who controlled
the game throughout, as well as the Christ’s forward pack, who fought relentlessly to gain an attacking
advantage.

Year 7 BASKETBALL
The year 7 basketball team tipped off their season with a dominant performance against St Richard
Reynolds Catholic School. After taking the first quarter to find their feet, Christ’s took control and pulled
away to finish with a comfortable score of 34-12. Their second match was against the Hampton Boys
School. There were a few nerves as the boys were fully aware of Hampton’s sporting reputation.
However, the nerves really set in when Christ's School realised they would be facing a year 8 team, with
each opposition player a good 2 inches taller than themselves. Keeping everything crossed, I was
hoping that the boys would not take too much of a beating, but to their credit, Christ’s started thegame with a fighting spirit, earning them a 6 point lead in the first quarter. As the match went on, both
Christ’s and Hampton attacked the basket with intent, with Hampton converting more of their shots on
target. In the last quarter the boys were down by 8, but this did not sway them (as I was concerned it
might) and they brought it back to a 2 point game. Unfortunately, the clock ran down to zero as the
boys were in attacking position. Both the Hampton coach and I were extremely
impressed with how well the Christ’s team handled themselves against such a
physically dominant opposition. Christ’s school will be playing Hampton boys
year 7 team in the New Year.

The boys unfortunately lost in round 5 of the national cupback in late November, it was a good run and we narrowlylost 3-2 after travelling two and half hours to the North ofEssex to a very strong side. It still was a fantastic effortgetting into the last 64 of the national cup and the boysshould be proud of their efforts.Last week we were lucky enough to be invited to the FA 150year celebration. It marks the time of when the FA ruleswere written and the first game played with these rules inBarnes back in 1863. The boys were lucky enough to meetGary Lineker and were treated to cameras and newscoverage from Sky Sports, the FA, BBC and CNN. More
importantly we beat Richmond Park Academy 3-2 in theirfinal game of the season!

A Message form our Chaplain Ruth Scott
Dear Parents and Carers,
Christmas is almost upon us and at home, as yet, I’ve done nothing about it. Thankfully, the same isn’t
true at school! The Advent wreath adorns reception, along with our Christmas tree. Yesterday we had our
Christmas Jumper charity day and Christmas lunch. Our almost life-size nativity figures of Mary, Joseph
and the donkey have travelled around the Departments and arrive at the Sports Hall today in time for
our school Carol Service tomorrow. Different activities have happened around them wherever they’ve
been. In Music, for example, the students had great fun singing carols, as you can see below.
Our Year 7’s and 8’s continued with their challenges through the term. Due to Ofsted and illness we have
postponed the Challenge shows until next term. Those Year 8’s who made heart -shaped cakes or crafts
did bring in their work to be photographed by a Children in Need fundraiser working on a book
illustrating a different heart-shape for each day of the year, accompanying the quotes of well-known
people about what touches their hearts.
Our Mufti Day earlier this month, organised through the House system raised well over a thousand pounds
for charity. It’s also lovely to see individual students run their own fund -raising events for charity without
any prompting from staff. Sami Al-Safadi in Year 9 deserves a special mention for raising just under £70 for
an orphanage we support in South America, by making and selling cakes. His effort means that thechildren in the orphanage will all get a Christmas lunch and some presents.

Earlier this week we had our candlelit Christmas Carol Service for parents and carers in Holy Trinity Church.
It was a lovely occasion. The choir, seen prac tising below, the orchestra and our actors and readers were
brilliant. Thanks to the PTA for the very welcome mulled wine and mince pies served at the end.
Behind the choir on the left you can just see a few decorated stars. Through Advent each tutor group was
asked to talk about who or what had been the guiding lights/inspiration in their lives so far, and to
decorate a star representing their thoughts. You won’t be surprised to hear Nelson Mandela featured on a
number of stars, among numerous sports people, family, friends, Jesus, Gandhi and Christ’s School
teachers – no bribes had to be paid for the latter! It would have been lovely to see more inspirational
women represented. Hopefully our girls will go on to take that role in future years.
It’s strange to think this is the last Christ Chronicles letter I shall write. The students and staff at Christ’s have
taught me so much during my time here. I shall miss them all very much. With Mrs Dixon at the helm and afantastic staff body I have no doubt Christ’s will go from strength to strength. Thank you, too, for your
kindnesses to me.
I wish you all a blessed
Christmas and joyful New
Year.
Every blessing, Ruth
