Head Coach

Matt Kelchner6-time USA South Coach of the Year13th year at CNU/9 NCAA AppearancesSusquehanna 1982Overall Record: 83-45 (.648)Conference Record: 66-14 (.825)

MATT KELCHNER has guided the Christopher Newport football program since its inception. The native of Covington, Pennsylvania, has been named the Coach of the Year in the USA South Athletic Conference six times in 12 seasons (2001, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011) and last year led the Captains to the NCAA Tournament for the 9th time in the 12 years of the program. Kelchner, a 1982 graduate of Susquehanna University, not only started the program from scratch but made it competitive from the very beginning. CNU has never posted a losing season and has developed a national presence seldom seen in young programs. His experience as a coach began in 1982 as an assistant at Mansfield University. In 1983, he joined the staff at Dickinson Col-lege for one year. He left to join the staff at William & Mary, and for the next 16 seasons climbed the ladder under Head Coach Jimmye Laycock. Kelchner eventually rose to the level of Recruiting Coordi-nator and Assistant Head Football Coach of the Tribe. While at William & Mary, Kelchner worked closely with the squad’s punting and kicking games. He also had the opportunity to coach numerous future NFL players. The list of pro players includes kicker Steve Christie, defensive back Darren Sharper, and receiver Mike Tomlin, who has gone on to become the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kelchner was named the Head Coach of the Christopher Newport football program on May 9, 2000. Almost 16 months later, on September 1, 2001, the Captains hit the playing field for the first game in program history. A crowd of over 6,000 watched the Cap-tains battle Salisbury at POMOCO Stadium. The CNU team of 2001 would eventually win a conference co-championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first start-up program to ever make the playoffs at any level. The success has continued for the CNU squad ever since, thanks in large part to the efforts of their highly motivated and hard working head coach.

CNU is 32-6 (.842) all-time against North Carolina schools. The Captains won their first 15 meetings with programs from North Carolina. There are three USA South members from Tobacco Road (CNU is 12-0 vs. Greensboro. 9-3 vs. Methodist and 6-3 against North Carolina Wesleyan). The Captains are also 5-0 all-time against Chowan College, a former conference member. CNU has out-scored its North Carolina opponents, 1,182-589, through the first 38 games, an average score of 31-16.

The Captains have never posted a losing record since the incep-tion of the football program in 2001. Christopher Newport and Virginia Tech are the only football programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, at any level, to have not posted a losing season in the last 12 years.

Captains and Hokies

The Captains have had tremendous success in the month of October since the beginning of the program. CNU was 3-1 last year in the tenth month and the Captains are now 44-8 (.846) all-time in October. The Captains have out-scored their opponents in the month of October, 1539-828, in the 52 games played (average score of 30-16). CNU is now 17-23 all-time in September...44-8 in October...and 22-14 in November since the inception of the football program.

Tough Non-Conference Schedules Following last week’s 17-10 win at Salisbury, the Captains are 17-31 (.354) all-time in non-conference games. The record reflects the amazing difficulty of schedules over the years. Three of the four non-conference opponents last year (Salisbury, Hampden-Sydney, and Mount Union) were ranked in the Top 25 at some point during the season, and Salisbury and Mount Union made the NCAA field...with Mount Union eventually winning the National Championship.

2013 Game Notes Continued

Overtime Info CNU has played six overtime games in the history of the football program. The Captains are 4-2 all-time in overtime, with wins over Salis-bury twice (2006 and 2009) as well as a 2-1 mark vs. Shenandoah (L in ‘01, W in ‘09 & ‘11) and a double-overtime loss at Stevenson in 2011. CNU did not go to overtime in 2012 after playing two overtime games in 2011.
