Colin Hall joined the company as an Apprentice Mechanic in August 1965 with T Pope & Son, Marlborough. He worked his way up to take over from Tony Ainslie as Service Manager on Tony’s retirement. Andrew Purton, Sales Administrator at Marlborough says "Colin was my mentor when I started as his Apprentice in 1972 and we have been closes pals since that day. We’ve shared a working lifetime together, seen each other’s children grow and now he’s retiring. Colin absolutely loves the company, his job and his colleagues, there is nothing he wouldn’t do for you, he’s a great friend. Wishing him luck just doesn’t do him justice." Colin is married to Margaret and they have three children and two grandchildren who will keep him busy in his retirement. Colin’s dedication to the company and his colleagues is second-to-none, he is much loved by all at the branch and by his customers. He will be sorely missed.

When T H White crane customer Tom O’Connor wanted to take a look at some new cranes he was ordering for his lorry fl eet he paid a fl ying visit to our Bradford branch – literally! It was 5.30pm on a Friday night and when Area manager Doug Wright told him what the traffi c was like on the on the M60, M62 and M606, Tom decided to use a helicopter rather than his car. Doug sought permission for the landing, Martin Coffey moved trucks from the depot apron and Tom fl ew in. After the whistlestop inspection Tom was off again like a whirlwind. Since 2004 Tom’s business – O’Connor Utilities – has purchased 21 Epsilon Grab Loaders from T H White for fi tting to his vehicle fl eet by local supplier Abba Commercials.

Flying visit to Bradford

plans to develop a new ProAgri sales and service centre dedicated to the expanded territory. To ensure high levels of customer support in the meantime T H White has appointed salesman Simon Pratt and technician Matt Whitehorn, both of whom come with substantial experience of agricultural machinery and Case IH equipment in particular. “I studied farm mechanisation at Agricultural College and then spent some years learning the trade on arable and poultry farms in Wiltshire and New South Wales, Australia,” says Simon. “My fi rst sales role was at Oakes Brothers where I received comprehensive sales training. Here I discovered the quality and durability of CNH products and gained extensive knowledge in Case’s full arable product line-up.” It was also at Oakes Brothers that Simon fi rst met Matt Whitehorn who is now one of the most accomplished technicians in the fi eld. Most work needed on Case IH machinery can be carried out by Matt on the farm, but on the occasions when something needs to go to the workshop T H White will send one of its two large articulated trailers to collect and deliver, meaning that down time is kept to a minimum and the farmer never has to worry. The fi rst Case IH tractor sold by Simon since he joined T H White was purchased by Mark Glover who farms 750 acres of arable land at Grateley near Andover, as well as contracting a further 500 acres. Mark freely admits that he used to buy tractors of another brand painted the chromatic opposite of Case red, but the turning point came in 2009 when he bought a Case IH Magnum 335. “That is one BIG tractor – a true armchair on wheels! I loved it straight away, but more importantly my crew on the farm loved it even more and they are the guys who matter as they use the kit every day.” A couple of months ago, when the time came to replace another tractor, Mark knew it was going to be a red one: “When we found out that T H White had become our local Case IH dealer

I was even more delighted. It’s a company that has been around a long time and we know they will be with us for the long term. I met with Simon and we tried a Puma 230 CVX – as expected the guys on the farm thought it was terrifi c so we bought it. “Not only was it a higher spec than anything else we had seen but it was cheaper too! Just like the Magnum it has real cab comfort and it’s so easy to use. My 78-year-old dad who now lives in France and hadn’t been near a tractor for years just got in and thanks to the brilliant joystick controller was able to drive it straight away. In fact he liked it so much we had a job to get him out! “With Case IH we were in a different world from that we had been used to before – these tractors have fantastic reliability and when something does need attention the T H White technicians really know their stuff which helps to keep servicing costs low,” Mark added. Simon Pratt is pleased to be returning to work in the area where he was born and bred but he also wants to make a real mark in this expanded venture for T H White. “It’s great visiting the farmers in my area – they are very welcoming and make smashing tea! But I also pride myself on getting to know what the customer wants, meeting challenges, guiding him through the options and presenting competitive quotes. I always remember a colleague once saying to me ‘Do it once and do it right.’ There’s no better advice than that.” If you would like to contact Simon to talk about the Case IH product, quality reliability and pricing you can call him on 07909 895502 or email [email protected].

When the crop is ripe and the sun goes down...

All-terrain timber shifter

With harvest behind us for another year we can now reveal the winner of our Facebook Harvest Photography competition. After much deliberation the judges decided that the photograph with the greatest merit was the magnificent sunset, above, taken by Charles Bowerman of Pewsey Hill Farm, Pewsey, Wiltshire. Perfectly capturing the feel of the long, warm days and evenings that characterised this year's harvest – so different from some recent years. The tracery of power

cables leads the eye to the combine nearing the end of its task, while the orb of the sun has almost sunk to the tree line. Perfect, and well done Charles who will be rewarded with £150-worth of Draper Tools. His picture is also being used as the cover photo for the T H White Agriculture Facebook page. There were many other interesting entries too and we couldn't resist publishing two runners-up. On the left below is a very different fish-eye view by John Sims of his New Holland

CX8040 harvesting wheat at Loppinger Farm, Steeple Ashton on a perfect summer evening. The entry from Butt Brothers of Wincanton is the view that many operatives have of harvest – from the driving seat! Fitted with a new 12 row header, the New Holland FR850 completed the maize harvest in record time. A big 'thank you' to all who entered. We hope to run this again next year, so all you budding farmer/photographers should start thinking about how you would like to approach the subject...

Logic salt spreaderThe Logic GDS150 is the latest model in the Logic Ground Drive Salt Spreader range. With its smaller capacity of 270litre (approx 335kg) it offers a suitable size machine for working behind smaller vehicles such as quads/ATVs and compact tractors, but with the same unique design features and performance of other GDS models. The GDS Salt Spreader uses a moving-floor conveyor system similar to highway-sized salt spreaders to convey the salt to the spinning disc system. The hopper will hold 270 litres (approx. 335kg) of road/rock salt and is capable of spreading all types of material, including wet rock salt, grit and sand. A unique agitation system and conveyor floor ensures wet or dry material can be spread effectively and accurately by a spinning disc. Working speeds of up to 15mph and road speeds between sites of up to 30mph mean wide areas can be covered quickly and efficiently.Available from T H White at £5325.00 plus vat.

There has been much speculation in the news about whether solar parks have a long term future in the UK, and we can categorically say they are live and kicking. Positioned carefully in the landscape they can provide a sustainable, biodiverse income stream for landowners and rural communities. T H White Energy has teamed up with two of the UK’s most successful professional developers of ground mounted solar PV installations who finance and operate in excess of 90 megawatts and who can offer landowners a consistent fair share of incomes from solar parks developed on land.

Leasing land for a solar PV farm can help diversify landowner revenues and offer certainty for the future by giving landowners an index-linked income for 25 years. We offer a variety of options depending on preference and site conditions from flat rates per acre, percentage of the sites gross income and PPA’s (power purchase agreements). We are looking for sites that meet these requirements: • 8 – 150 acre lots • Grade 3 land or less • Not be located in a AONB (Area of outstanding beauty) or Conservation area• Have 11kV, 33kV, 132kV lines or a substation near or on the site • Cause minimal visual impact• Ideally well screened from any roads or residential properties. If you think you have a suitable site and would like to discuss further, please contact our Energy team on 01380 723040.

Solar Farms are still live and kicking!

When Vastern Timber needed a versatile lifting and handling vehicle for its 17-acre site at Royal Wootton Bassett, T H White was able to provide the perfect solution. The site represents a challenge for any working machine as it is located on a hillside and was originally the old canal wharf for the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal. A traditional forklift was not suitable as the small tyres and narrow wheelbase would restrict it to a smooth concrete surface, whereas a large part Vastern’s yard comprises rough terrain. Having assessed the conditions, staff at T H White’s Marlborough branch recommended a Manitou M50.4 with a 3m70 Duplex Mast and sideshift carriage. The 4-wheel-drive Manitou

machine is ideal for operating on uneven ground and is capable of working in any part of the seventeen acre site. Additionally, its 5,000kg load capacity is well suited to the primary task of moving and stacking timber in the storage yard for the ‘air drying’ process, where the timber boards are separated by inserting laths of wood between them to maintain the circulation of air for drying. Vastern Timber is a family owned sawmill and timber

merchant, specialising in the sawing, drying and machining of British hardwoods. These are sourced from well managed British forests that are either FSC – certified or regulated under Forestry Commission guidelines. The high quality timber produced by Vastern is highly favoured by architects and specifiers and has been widely used in many prestige developments for beautiful and durable exterior cladding, as well as specialist interior joinery. You can find out more about Vastern Timber at www.vastern.co.uk. If you have a specialist lifting or handling task why not talk to us about the versatile Manitou machines. Just call any of T H White's agricultural branches.

Marking Basildon's 50thAs part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of New Holland’s Basildon operation, 40 T H White customers travelled to Essex to see the only large scale tractor production plant in the UK. On display in the new multi million pound visitor centre was a comprehensive range of current products including a celebration special edition of the latest T7.270 auto command, alongside an immaculate 1971 Ford 7000 and a 25 year celebration silver 7810. Visitors were able to challenge their skills on the latest PLM simulator and all had a very enjoyable day out.

Following a period of intense design and preparation working closely with our client Langmead Farms and the local planners, T H White’s Materials Handling & Storage Division has now started work on a new grain processing and storage facility at the Chichester Food Park in Sussex. The objective was to develop a technical solution that not only meets the processing and storage requirements, but fits into the site sympathetically, minimising impact on the environment and those who live in it. As with all grain storage and processing facilities, the plant is designed to maximise the quality of the crop through process control and the creation of the correct storage conditions. This ensures that the crop will achieve its maximum value by giving the supply chain produce at the right quality, right time and right place. In preparing the designs the health and welfare of those who work in and around the

facility has been incorporated into the thinking. Langmead Farms has always placed the environmental impact of its developments right at the top of the agenda. This takes account of everything from visual impact of the facility to minimising its carbon emissions. The plant has been designed with both current and future technology developments in mind, from solar PV on the roof to heat recovery systems. As well as the obvious environmental advantages, this focus also keeps the long term running costs, and hence project lifecycle cost, to a minimum. The end result will be a state of the art facility delivering high quality produce at minimum operational costs. If you would like to learn more about our grain processing plants, energy saving technology and quality control processes please call our team on 01380 723040, or email [email protected].
