Man Up, the annual KNCSB men’s retreat, will be held
March 6-7, 2020, at Webster Conference Center, Salina, KS.
“The Invisible Man” is the retreat theme.
The retreat is aimed at adult men and teen guys in grades 7-12. It will start at 3 p.m. Friday, March 6, and end at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7. All KNCSB churches, other churches and men/teen guy groups are invited to attend. The cost is $75 per person staying at Webster and $65 per person staying off campus. Online registration begins Jan. 1 and ends Feb. 14 at http://kncsbevents.org/

Andy Addis will be the featured speaker. He is lead pastor of CrossPoint Church, Hutchinson, Kan. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communications from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan., and a master of divinity degree with biblical languages from Southwestern Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. Andy is the author of three books:
• “Reading It Right”
• “Count It all Joy”
• “Blotch: A Tale of Forgiveness and Grace”
• Rick Stones will be the worship leader. He has served as worship leader for 10 years at Western Hills Church, Topeka, Kan. Stones is an architectur-al engineer for a design firm.
Jesus, Pizza, and Dodgeball It will come as no surprise that teenagers, and younger kids, are attached to electronic devices. It’s becoming more rare to see kids playing outside and exploring the world. In the past, parents had to make their kids come inside and now it can be a struggle for parents to get their kids outside.
As a culture we have started to hide behind our screens instead of interacting face to face with people. Instead of calling people we text them. Instead of going to tell our kids that dinner is ready we text them. In the evening we have resorted to staring at more screens instead of talking with our family. When we have to have hard conversations, we send emails instead of sitting down across from them. When we do actually sit down for those conversations, we have already made up our mind on the issue before we start because we have asked our online “friends” their opinion on the issue (and to no surprise they always agree with us).
Teenagers are watching how we use screens in our lives and we are not currently setting good examples for them to follow. Teenagers have grown up in a world where they have always known personal electronic devices to exist. However, teenagers need to be taught how to exist outside of their electronic devices. They need to know how to carry on a conversation with someone, how to disagree on an issue and still be good friends with someone, and how to have balance and self-control in their life.
Multiple studies have shown that teenagers and kids who spend a lot of time on electronics have high anxiety, depression, have trouble focusing, and many other things. Teenagers need to be told how much time they can spend each day on electronics, what time they can start using them in the morning, what apps they can and can’t use, when they have to be shut off for the night, and they must be held accountable to these rules. None of this is to say that we should get rid of all electronics, but simply that we should monitor how much we are using them. I hope you have made clear boundaries for all of your children and electronics from the start, but even if you didn’t it’s not too late to start. However, the longer you wait the harder the path will be to implement new rules and boundaries.

From the Pastor’s Pen How is it possible that we have reached the end of another year? It is AMAZING how quickly a year goes by! How can days, weeks, and months disappear so quickly? A number of wonderful things have taken place and yet so many things are left undone as we enter into 2020 and I’m quite confident that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Reading through Paul’s letter to the Philippians I started to wonder how my Master feels about how I lived my life in 2019. What was once counted “to my profit” that “I now consider loss for the sake of Christ” (Phil. 3:7)? Have I allowed my love for Jesus to shape my values and priorities or have I allowed the world and the pursuit of its pleasures to drive my thoughts and actions? Have I allowed my love of life’s pleasures to stand in the way of my efforts to experience the “surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” -- I mean, what is more important than one’s ability to “gain Christ” (3:8)? Am I willing to focus my all on serving Him so that I might share “in his sufferings” and thus “know Christ and the power of his resurrection” (3:10)? How long has it been since I took the opportunity to stop and honestly evaluate my Christian journey and measure my growth in Christ? I can certainly echo Paul’s sentiments when he wrote “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (3:12)! I know that I have not become all that my Master intends for me to be so “one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (3:13-14).
I want to fearlessly share Jesus in 2020. I want to engage people in gospel conversations at every opportunity the Lord presents me; and I want to challenge my church family to do the same! It doesn’t have to be frightening and should not be confrontational. I want to seize the unexpected meetings when I see a distraught person on a parking lot or in a business lobby. Smiles, words of kindness and offers of assistance often change the spirit of a person and present opportunities to share Christ with others. If you sense the Spirit of God leading you to stop and engage don’t hesitate or refuse. Just do it! I’ve been busy assessing myself. I pray you will take the time to do the same. Today, will you consider any changes that might need to be made in the days ahead as you continue your Christian journey? As the voice of the Holy Spirit calls and leads, allow Him to direct your paths and commit yourself to follow Him in 2020. If you do, you will . . . Be Blessed!
