Teaching Tips for Christmas Eve Graphing Challenge:

This graphing challenge is meant to provide practice with graphing linear equations as well as writing linear equations. Because of the open-ended nature of activity two, students will have a chance to think more deeply about what the parts of an equation mean and represent. They can also use problem-solving strategies to come up with their equations, by determining the best approach to write an equation (using slope and y-intercept or two points).

Act iv ity One: The first page is a straightforward, self-checking assignment. Students are given a set of linear equations and must graph them. If their line does not cross though one of the toys, they have graphed incorrectly and can try again. This is a great way to help kids familiarize themselves with graphing lines and see the connection between an equation and the graph.

Act iv ity Two: The second page is similar, but a more open-ended challenge. Toys are given on the graph and must be “collected,” but there are no equations. Students must therefore write their own equations to cross through each toy. They must write 6 different equations (one for each toy) and as a hint or starting point, the coordinates for each toy are given. Though the directions do not specify, I would suggest limiting students to only one vertical line and one horizontal line, requiring them to think more about the equations they write. If your students are at varying degrees of mastery, this would be a fun and simple way to differentiate based on students’ needs. Or you could do activity one in class, then discuss the connections between an equation and its graph, and assign activity two for homework or extra credit. Hopefully this will be a fun way to get your kids thinking about linear equations, slope, y-intercept, and more!

Christmas Eve Graphing Challenge!

D irect ions: Santa has to collect all the toys from the elves before he flies out on Christmas Eve! Graph each of the equations below to “collect” the toys. (A

toy has been collected when a line crosses through it.)

y = 2 y = !!!+ !"

!

y = 3x – 32 x = 3 y = x + 13 y = -x - 10

Christmas Eve Graphing Challenge!

D irect ions: Help Santa collect all the toys to deliver them on Christmas Eve! Write one equation to cross through each toy (you will have a total of 6

equations) to collect each of the toys for Santa.

(HINT: Your lines should cross through each of these points: (-8, -5), (-1, 0), (-5, 7), (2, -9), (4, 5) and (8, -2))
