Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1:78-79

Peace is an often misunderstood word.

By peace, we can sometimes mean the absence of conflict. When a war ends, nations sign a peace treaty. Similarly, when we are stressed out, we long for some “peace and quiet”, an absence of turmoil or tension.

By peace, we can also mean something (or someone) that brings us happiness. “At peace” can describe how we feel after we have eaten a really great meal or finished an excellent novel.

But, in the Bible, peace is much deeper, richer and far more complex.

Peace describes a rich and fertile situation where all relationships are flourishing in the way God intended them to be. When the Bible uses the concept “peace”, it means many things happening at once: People in right relationship with God, their Creator and Savior, People in right relationship with themselves, People in right relationship with one another, and People in right relationship with creation.

Finding the path to peace is so often hard to do. Our culture is constantly offering to us lifestyles and choices that promise peace, but in reality can never deliver on those promises. And, because of our own uncertainty, pride, and shame, we can often be easily led astray in our search for peace.

This year during Advent* and Christmas, we are going to be looking at texts from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. God spoke through Isaiah giving Israel, the ancient people of God, and ultimately us his promises of peace.

God desires for us to walk in his ways of peace, and shows us the way to peace requires us to draw near to him. So, don’t give into the temptation towards self-protective cynicism or mindless holiday distraction. This Advent season, let us come to the Lord and ask him to show us the way.

Let heaven and nature sing!

(*For those new to the church calendar, Christmas season begins on Christmas Day and lasts until Epiphany, January 6th. Advent is the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas day.)

Under the baby’s head she held love, love, sing Emmanuel. Lending at his birth, peace on all the earth. See his mother Mary weeping love, love, love.

Over the shepherds, angels tell. Joy, joy, called Emmanuel. Born in Bethlehem, goodwill unto men. Bend before his cradle singing joy, joy, joy.

Down from the throne of heaven he fell. Light. Light, became Emmanuel. Covered in our flesh, swaddled in our dress. Wise men see his coming chasing light, light, light.

Onto the ground his blood he spilled. Peace, peace, cried Emmanuel. Sinners dark and vile, God to reconcile. Spilling love and joy and light and peace, peace, peace.

Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of candles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another candle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, and peace.

The white Christ candle represents the light that has come into the world through Jesus Christ.

Let it be our joy tonight to prepare ourselves to hear the message of the angels: in heart and mind to go even to Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to be, and with the shepherds and the wise men adore the child lying in his mother’s arms.

Let us read and mark in God’s word the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of human sin to the glorious redemption brought to us by this holy child; and in company with the whole church let us make this our church glad with our songs of praise:

But first let us pray: For the needs of the whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth. (silence)

And let us remember the poor and the helpless: The cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the elderly and the little children; and all who do not know the loving kindness of the Lord. (silence)

Let us also remember all those who have gone before us in the faith. Those who rejoice in Christ with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which none can number, whose hope was in Jesus Christ:

and let us pray that we may be counted among that fellowship of saints, receiving grace to offer unto God our service, living in unity and fellowship with all his people, and giving honor to all that he has made. (silence)

Let us pray together as Christ taught us, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders.

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

In the beginning, God created all things―the heavens, the earth, plants, animals, and people. Under his kingship, everything was "very good". We were created to live under the wise, kind, and gracious kingship of God.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The LORD God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field;

on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring;

he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Our first parents―Adam & Eve―listened to the serpent's lies and did not believe that God was a wise and good king. Instead of trusting in his goodness, they rebelled against God’s loving rule in their lives. But even in this act of judgment, God promised redemption.

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

God promised that, through Abram and Sarai, he will bless the world, reversing the curse of Genesis 3. Through these two people, God will re-establish his kingdom on earth.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it

with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

And his name shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Like Adam & Eve, ancient Israel rebelled against God's good kingship over them. Through the prophet Isaiah, God promises that he will send another king―the Prince of Peace―who will be the one who will finally restore God's kingship over all the earth. This ruler will be unlike any other earthly king, queen, or prince.

F I F T H L E S S O N Isaiah 11:1-9

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see,

or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,

and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,

and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,

and faithfulness the belt of his loins.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.

The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.

They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain;

for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

In another prophecy about the Prince of Peace, God promises that a "shoot from the stump of Jesse"―that is, a descendant of Israel's King David―will come into the world. This king will rule righteously and restore all that is broken in the world and reconcile all things.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

The angel Gabriel visits Mary and tells her that she will bear a child who will carry out God’s purposes in the world. Namely, her child will be the great promised King who will come and restore God's kingdom on the earth.

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

In contrast to the rulers of our world, who wield authority and power in a self-centered way, the Prince of Peace comes in humility. Jesus' humble birth points forward to his self-giving death on a cross, when he gave up his life to save the lives of all who put their trust in him.

O little town of Bethlehem! How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth, The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; Oh come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

P R A Y E R A N D B L E S S I N G

May the Lord be with you. And also with you

Let us pray. O God, who makes us glad with the yearly remembrance

of the birth of your only Son, Jesus Christ: Grant that as we joyfully receive him as our Redeemer,

so may we also with confidence meet him when he returns. Amen.

May the God of peace grant you the fullness of peace and goodwill, and may the blessing of God Almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen!
