Storage Units for the Homeless

Several months ago Lisa Searchinger, Executive Director of HOPE (Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement) approached CENTRALongmont to see ifwe would be open to providing space for a storage shed to house bins for the homeless to store their belongings during the day.  With the blessing of our Facilities Committee and Session, construction of the shed has be completed next to the church on 4th St. Many of the homeless in Longmont have jobs, are looking for work, or need to go to appointments during the day.  It is difficult for them if they must carry all their belongings with them everywhere they go.  Can you imagine going to work, a job interview or a doctor appointment carrying a backpack and your sleeping bag?  Being homeless is very stressful and providing space to store their belongings is a small way we can help relieve some of their stress.  The storage shed is a joint project with CENTRALongmont, HOPE, Home Depot, Krische Construction, and the City of Longmont.  We are providing the space, Home Depot donated $500 worth of materials, a crew from Krische Construction is providing the labor, the City of Longmont is supplying the storage bins, and HOPE is providing finances above $500 for the shed, liability insurance, and the manpower to run the program.  The shed will contain 10-12 personal storage units (recycle bins).  Clients using the storage units will sign an agreement with HOPE and will only have access to the unit 2 times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.  The shed will be locked and have an alarm. Access will be managed by HOPE staff.  Only HOPE staff is allowed into the shed and clients must sign agreements and follow rules. HOPE will cover all liabilities.

This type of storage has been successful in other parts of the country.  If you would like more

Parent’s Corner

Three Days and Ninety-Seven Boxes Later

We all celebrated Christmas a little early thanks to Operat ion Christmas Child. As a congregation we packed 97 boxes that will be

given to children this year as a show of our love and hope in God. Daniel and Joseph Basil represented our youth on Saturday night as they filled Fellowship Hall with the donations of toys and items given by the congregation. The next morning, children, teens, and seniors packed boxes with toys, school supplies, tooth brushes, and more. Many boxes were sent with a handwritten note of love. The generosity didn’t end there. The following Friday, a group gathered to wrap and label each of the boxes. Thank you to ever yone who supplied materials, toys, hygiene items, shoeboxes, wrapping paper, tape, scissors, shipping costs, and a willing heart to pack a box for a child you will never meet.

Christmas Traditions

Each n ight in December my fami l y would gather around a table in the living room to open our Advent calendar. Everyone took a guess at what was hidden behind the numbered paper flap. The last person to guess was also the person with the privilege of revealing the day’s surprise. If you have never done an Advent calendar or are looking for a new one (my family reused the same one for years, who is going to remember which number has the teddy bear anyways) pick up a Let Heaven and Nature Sing booklet and tree centerpiece in the Overflow room. Each day includes a scripture reading and a brief explanation of a Christian symbol that relates to the Christmas season. This practice can be done as a family, couple, alone, or with someone over the phone. However you celebrate, you will be blessed to bring the anticipation of Advent into your home.

Peace in the Chaos by Holly Cable

As you may have noticed, our foster daughter has returned to our care. This time she came with her 2-month old sister. Schedules and routines have shifted in our home, and I often wish I had a third arm to give enough hugs to both precious girls. One space we have kept special is bedtime for Frankie. After the footie pajamas are on and teeth are brushed, we head upstairs for some cuddle time during lullabies. As soon as I sit in the rocker she asks me “doo day?” She is reminding me to ask about her day. As an almost two-year old, most days are good. Then we go through the list of all the people who love her, to which she replies “uh huh.” Once in bed, I make the sign of the cross on her head and pray for good dreams.

I know Faith5 (or parts of it) are making an impression because her daycare teacher told me that she thought it was a bit odd that Frankie kept making her stroke her face at nap time –an attempt to make the sign of the cross for her. In the world of chaos that is foster care, and parenting in general, our actions are powerful. You lead and model what life looks like, and this includes the faith development of your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

1. Share your high and low for the day

2. Read a short passage of scripture (Psalms and Proverbs are short)

3. Reflect on how the passage relates to the highs and lows

4. Pray for each other’s highs and lows

5. Bless each other.

“…it is impossible to program relationships. All of us can, however, create environments where relationships might develop and grow into something significant.”
