Dear CanTeeners

It was fantastic to see what a success Bandanna Week was. I personally did not get up to any Bandanna Week selling (that’s what happens when you live in a small area) however, I spoke at a college in Havelock North who had a church service incorporating bandannas as they were also remembering a friend who had passed away earlier this year.

In September I attended the ICCCPO survivors meeting in Oslo, Norway. This was an excellent meeting, which I won’t go into right now as you can read more about it later in the magazine.

In October I attended a PSOG (Paediatric Oncology Steering Group) late effects work stream meeting and will be working with 2 other people to create a health quiz for young people who have had cancer. Briefl y, this tool is about assessing youth health and well-being by asking a series of self-report questions. I am working with an Oncology Nurse and an Adolescent Health Educationalist.

At the next CanTeen Annual General Meeting (2nd April, 2005), I will be standing down from the National President’s position. I don’t plan to disappear (or leave the country!), and I am still happy to work with the Board/ President in part if invited to. I will continue in my role as Vice-Chair of the ICCCPO survivors group, and if the Board is happy I am happy to continue to represent CanTeen with PSOG in the late effects and adolescent work streams.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, supporters and volunteers for their hard work and generosity. We could not support young people living with cancer without your help.

I wish all readers and their families a Merry Christmas.

NATIONAL PRESIDENTS REPORT

NATIONAL MANAGERS REPORTHi Everyone,

The year is quickly drawing to a close, and it is time to stop and refl ect on what we have achieved this year.

Firstly, I want to thank all staff for their commitment and contribution. Staff are the enablers in CanTeen; they generate our income, develop and deliver the programmes and camps; create the safe environments where our young people meet; share stories and ensure the peer support network fl ourishes.

CanTeen has a highly qualifi ed team of staff and the growth in membership, activities, profi le, awareness and relationships in the community refl ect their professionalism.

Our Volunteers are also fantastic, without their contribution we would not be able to run many of the activities and camp.

We have worked closely with the health professionals; oncologists, nurses, social workers and councillors. Referral programmes have been developed and our membership has increased as a result.

CanTeen has also developed a ‘Referral Policy’ with the Child Cancer Foundation. CanTeen also contributes to the Child Cancer Scholarship Fund and many of our CanTeeners are successful in receiving scholarships each year.

This year like other years our CanTeen members constantly step out of their comfort zone to represent their organisation. This may be at Board or branch level; it may be in a leadership role at an activity or a public speaking engagement. It is fabulous to see the personal growth and development of our members in these situations.

We have a great range of supporters, who purchase bandannas, Christmas cards and make regular donations to CanTeen. Also our principal sponsor Foodstuffs. Without their support and generosity, CanTeen would not exist.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge our Patron - Lady Blundell. We are very lucky to have “Lady B” as our Patron, and I would like to extend our sincere congratulations to her on receiving the Dame Grand Cross; the highest award with in St John.

I hope that exams have gone well for members, and would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas a Healthy and Prosperous New Year and a well deserved holiday.

Hi there guys,

The past few months in Otago/Southland have been one of signifi cant change. We have been extremely busy, our offi ce has a new coat of paint and we have rearranged the furniture, so now we can actually see and move in our little enclosure we call our CanTeen offi ce.

The changing shape of Otago/Southland has seen an introduction and warm welcome to Karen Hodgkinson who is our new Activities Co-ordinator. Lucky Karen was straight in to organising her fi rst trip away with a bunch of us to Coronet Peak in Queenstown for our annual ski camp. It was a FANTASTIC trip and huge thanks must go to Karen for all the hard work she put into it. It was a great success. Only on the last day was a cautious member of staff taken from the beginner slopes. This was because one of those random bits of snow just popped up out of nowhere and tripped them up…we have all been there right?

Our membership is forever increasing, with the huge effort on Angela’s part, which is fantastic to see. More and more of our membership are becoming active members…good on ya Otago/Southland. We must be doing something right!!

We still have our weekly get together at the offi ce, where we just chill for a few hours and have turns cooking tea, most of you are probably thinking ‘very brave people’…well we breed them tough down in this neck of the woods. Along with our monthly Starbucks and Time Zone activities (which bring different members to each activity) we have also had activities

WAIKATO, AUCKLAND & NORTHLANDSKI CAMP ‘04Well… It started for the Waikato crowd on Friday 3rd October in the most beautiful weather one could ever want. We joined our Auckland friends for a quick lunch from Subway before jumping on the bus and starting our long trip to the mountain. (Ok only 4 hours… but that’s long)

When we arrived at camp it was all go as we were divided into groups, sorted our rooms, gear and then dinner. It was an early night (though not in the guys dorms lol) as the morning started at 6 when we were woken up to the beautiful melodies of a wooden spoon beating a pot so after a quick breakfast and getting the jobs done we were off to the mountain. When we arrived we found it was a beautiful day again with barely a cloud in the sky and wind a minimum. So without delay we headed off with our wonderful instructors for a day we will never forget. My group was intermediate snowboarding and though there were a lot of bails there was also a lot of fun. In no time we were carving up the slopes and heading further up the mountain.

That night with not too many sunburnt people we played ‘Spoons’ (Adventures Within’ style) and I must say it was quite gross. It involved playing spoons the usual way with the loser having to eat something quite yucky like… raw egg, raw onion, and bulls… I’ll stop there and leave the rest up to your imagination. We enjoyed another day up the mountain before a very tired and exhausted bunch of CanTeeners hopped on the bus for the long trip back home.

I would like to thank Brett from Adventures Within for the hard work he put in and the wonderful instructors who made the weekend a lot easier for those of us who didn’t know what we were doing. I’d also like to thank Lee and Murray for their time and Lee for being the only CanTeen staff member on camp. And of course it wouldn’t be a camp without our lovely volunteers, thanks guys we luv you!

such as Laser Force and Ten Pin Bowling. Coming up we also have a BBQ evening. Our AGM this year is being held in Invercargill with the CanTeeners being billeted out. It looks like Southland will put on another weekend to remember.

As you all know volunteers are an important part of CanTeen, well it couldn’t work without them. Huge thanks goes to our dedicated team that never fail us here in Otago/Southland. A special thanks to Mark, our only male who we haven’t scared away yet.

And of course a huge thanks to Angela for absolutely everything she does for us and everything that has changed so far, you can already see the positive changes.

HELPING HAND FOR CANTEEN.The Nelson branch of CanTeen, the New Zealand organisation for young people living with cancer, recently received a “helping hand” from Farmers Department store in Nelson. The store runs a nationwide programme called Helping Hands to fi nancially assist community groups. Last year CanTeen Nelson submitted an application to be consid-ered for this programme and the local Farmers Store chose it as the recipient of their efforts. During the last year Farmers staff have raised monies by way of raffl es, staff donations and general fundraising. A cheque for $1351.20 was presented to the President of Nelson Can-Teen, Hamish King early in September by Joan Samuela, the Home manager for the store.Hamish expressed the thanks of all members of Nelson to the staff at Farmers for their support and fi nancial assistance. The monies will go towards the cost of a summer camp being planned at Hanmer Springs in De-cember.

I hope everyone has had a good year. I hope you all have a very safe and happy holiday.

Merry Christmas, take care.

HEY YA ALL (gotta say it with a Canadian accent)That’s right I’m back in little old NZ and it was really good to be able to catch up with the Naki CanTeeners. My summer in America was absolutely awesome and did think of you all back here in the cold as I managed to soak up a lot of sun. Let’s just say that I did miss you all enough that I had to get Mum to send me the CanTeen National Mag all the way to America just so I could fi nd out what has been going on.To be able to write this article I had to ask a few CanTeeners what they have all been up to while I was away, they told me not much, but I did see a few cheeky grins amongst them. So I am going to have to spend a bit of time getting to the bottom of what really went on. Well we have managed to get ourselves a new coordinator, her name is Dianne, she is defi nitely an asset to CanTeen and has some wonderful ideas. So am looking forward to that! Up and coming we are all off to play a round of mini golf, so that should be interesting. Then after that we have our Christmas Party with Santa, so am really looking forward to catching up all those that are back for the Christmas holidays, can see that it is going to be a good night!!So I wish you all a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year that is fi lled with Love, Happiness and lots of fun.Love Always Rachel Fendall

“QUEER EYE” MAKEOVER!We have been busy little beavers down here in the garden city!! At the moment the Christchurch members are busy giving our offi ces a sort of “Queer Eye” makeover! Our once white paint cracked bookcase now resembles a cow and our 10 year old movie posters have been replaced by original artwork. Around 8 members have been very busy painting and creating but the result has been worth it. You know what they say “good things take time”. It still looks a little messy at the moment (Koral walked in and thought we had been burgled) but I can defi nitely already see the potential! Our last general meeting had a record attendance which was great to see and we have had the pleasure of having six new members join up in the last few months. Laser Strike was a very popular activity with the members a few weekends back (nothing brings out pure competitiveness like a good game of laser strike I must say!).Bandanna Week went extremely well for us, Koral managed to get a Clay Aiken look-a-like to sing for people who donated money which proved to be a great success (particularly with me). We had a few people do head shaves and Zak and I went back to primary school to do a speech and we were shocked to fi nd out that kids sing “I’m a Believer” in assembly these days! What happened to “Michael rowed the boat ashore”?? Koral did an amazing job for her fi rst bandanna week down here in Christchurch and we managed to sell a record number of bandannas.A few members went to the races in Show Weekend for a sausage sizzle; it was a great day in which we managed to make a small profi t.The local Karaoke bar put on a Karaoke Idol gig for us which raised a little money and was a great night out for the over 18’s. The Clay Aiken look-a-like made another experience which was good to see (literally) and we had a fantastic time listening to a number of brilliant singers. Apart from that things are going smoothly within the offi ce and we are gearing up for our renowned Christmas party. I hope everyone has a very safe, happy and relaxing festive season, that’s all from us. Kia KahaAeronwy CordingChristchurch Branch of Northern South Island Division

Hi all, well as I type up this report and look at the calendar, I can’t believe it is nearly Christmas and that I have been co-president of CanTeen Waikato Division for nearly a year. After the 28th Nov I will be stepping away from the role but will defi nitely say it has been a really full on year for the Waikato/BOP/East Cape Division. Yes the huge branch we are geographically.Over the past few months we have had Bandanna Week (as you all have) with plenty of members getting involved and out there on the streets and malls selling our fabulous bandannas. Lee (our Coordinator) and I were asked to be models while wearing our bandanna, but hey who am I kidding, it wasn’t really for a model job, just an art student needing some free talent...ha-ha. We had a few head shaves to attend all in aid of CanTeen, always great to see the support. Even our own Sarah Marsden shaving off her golden locks...you go girl! Winter camp with Auckland/Northland has been and gone. Again it proved to be a popular camp with plenty of fun and not many tears, that’s right, no broken bones but defi nitely some sore backsides, legs, feet and wrists and I won’t say and more to put those off who want to go next year. It was an awesome weekend with some superb sunshine on the mountain. Starbucks are still going along strong...and plenty of frappachinos to be had. Now we look forward to our AGM, Christmas Party, National Camp and hopefully Summer Camp early next year.Unfortunately we have had two special members pass away in the past few months. Our hearts go out to the families of Ross Hayworth and Sally-Ann Cook.As this will be the last time I write for the magazine as co-president I would like to thank you all who I have got to know over the past year. It has been a very special time for me while dealing with my personal cancer experience. You’ve still got me for the next 6 months before I turn 25 and leave CanTeen. Take care, stay out of trouble and enjoy your summer. Rebecca :)

CENTRAL DIVISION WINTER CAMPWe actually got to go up the mountain this time!

After taking a detour through Wanganui, the Wellington crew fi nally arrived at Venture Lodge in Ohakune. Finding our rooms was a bit of a mission as the rooms allocated were constantly changing. After settling down and fi guring out whose bed was whose, we came into the lounge and discussed the rules of the camp. Once that was all sorted out, we headed for bed, ready to wake up bright and early.Saturday morning: We woke up, the sun was shining, the birds were singing. It was a beautiful day. After breakfast we headed up the icy slopes. It took a while to get sorted, but we got through, meeting our instructors half an hour late. They gave us some extra time in order to really get the hang of stopping, turning, etc. So we hung around doing our own thing; whether it was sliding down on your bum, skiing skilfully down the expert slopes, tobogganing down the side of the mount, or snowboarding profi ciently past other boarders. When we were ready to go, we met back at the café to trundle back to the lodge in our wagons. That night we watched a movie, (Starsky and Hutch) and played some games. Then back to bed to listen to the humming of the heater above us.The next morning about half of us wanted to go back up the mount to build our skills on the slopes. We spent a couple of hours up there before lumbering back to the lodge. We played some games, and then started to pack-up. Once we were fi nished, we said our good-byes and went our separate ways. Looking forward to what next year might bring.Winter Camp was fully awesome, although there were some ‘minor’ injuries, nothing “tragic” happened. Next year is going to be a blast!

KiaOra my name is Trudi Johnston and I am the president of Northern South Island Division. I have an incurable brain tumour called an Oligodendroglioma.Well it’s been a long tough 7 weeks for me. It all started on Saturday the 9th October when I was getting ready to head out for tea and I was constantly dropping my makeup items. The next thing I knew my left arm went completely dead. I rang my nurse friend straight away and was told in no uncertain terms to get to the hospital smartly. My mate and I had already ordered a taxi so instead of going out for tea we made our way to A&E. I can’t remember a lot over the next few hours, but I became unconscious and was rushed to a MRI scan then rushed into theatre to remove a major blood clot on my tumour site. I started off with complete weakness on my left side and 4 weeks ago I started to get some movement in my leg, and this has continued to improve, I am now walking very slowly with the aid of a crutch. My latest time stat for 10m is 2min.28sec - which is fantastic since my fi rst time was 5min 30 sec.

Hiya,Well, I’m now into my third month here at CanTeen and I’m having a great time.I have already been to a few activities and those of you that I have met have been very welcoming, including having massive amounts of water splashed on me at Rainbows End! so thanks for that guys☺

A little bit about me – I am 25, although I sometimes wonder!! I have been a registered nurse for about 4 years and have just returned from working in the UK on a Teenager Cancer Trust ward. I had an absolutely amazing time working there and unexpectedly found my passion for working with Teenagers. As you guys know there aren’t really any teenage services in NZ, so I have come into this job.

Well, here I am and I’m hoping to help create a better relationship between CanTeen and health services around Auckland.

I think that we here at CanTeen can be doing a whole heap of stuff to better cater for Teenagers and want to see this happen!!

Let me know what you want out of CanTeen!!

I really look forward to meeting heaps of you at National Camp!!

AUCKLAND / NORTHLANDWell, we have been really busy what with Bandanna selling at 20 different locations all being manned by volunteers. Next up was the “Big Day Out” at Rainbows End, a justly reward for members and volunteers involved with Bandanna Week.

A visit to the Glenbrook Steel Mill at Waiuku, a very nice lunch and a cheque presentation made for an interesting educational day. Another event that went down a treat was the Laser Strike, lunch at Burger King followed by Ten Pin Bowling. Throw in several members attending The World Festival of Magic and then a Day at the Auckland Zoo Sponsored by More FM made an interesting weekend for the 27/28th November. We held our AGM at 111 Grafton Rd. The election saw Sam England elected president, Gena Dyer (Vice President,) Stephanie Gordon, (Secretary) Kyle Perwick re elected Treasurer and committee members Jeff Thumath, Scott Powell, Amanda Bowdler, Tim Grey and Aslan Perwick. Page 12: Christmas 2004

Well I have fi nally fi nished my second year of university and am trying to enjoy the sun up in the beautiful Nelson region (that is if it would stop raining) University was an interest-ing one this year. I chose not to get a fl at outside of uni but instead try my luck at an international hall of residents; low and behold they accepted me, something about me being a kiwi. Anyway it turned out to be the best decision I’ve made. Not only did I have a great roof over my head but I shared it with two American chicks, a Canadian chick and a couple of guys.

Being both a part of western, so called civilized societies I thought that the cultural differences between me and my American fl at mates would be little. However proved wrong I was. From the moment we met each other the bantering began. I would take the mickey out of their language and they would do the same right back at me. Good times. One of the things I was going to learn was that the stereo type of an American. Loud and what we would call full of them-selves that we see over here in their sitcoms and movies was so true but, you got to love them for it. Anyway after we got over those boundaries we had the best fun ever.

At the end of the fi rst semester, one of our lovely American chicks left. The question was who was going to replace her. Luckily we were graced with the presence of another Ameri-can but this time a guy. So as per the start of the year, we met each other and then again begun the bantering. It was great fun. We all loved to take the mikey out of each other and ourselves and for those of you that know me my sight was the topic of many laughs and a lot of good times.

This new fl atmate of mine was quite a genius or so I thought. He was one of those lucky people who had found a way to get through uni without too much study, but still get the best results. This new fl at mate also had a great love for golf. Back home he worked at a country club where the one and only Bill Gates was a member. Coming from such a high quality golf club as he did he did not stop complaining about the lack of good clubs and how expensive they were (Blah, blah, blah). Us kiwi’s loved to take the mickey out of that. Anyway he brought some golf clubs in the end and me being me I had to make a fool out of myself by having a game of golf with him. He was hitting the ball for miles while I was perfecting the visually disabled man’s shot. This shot was the one where I looked all good and then when it came to hitting the ball I would elegantly miss and fi nd the ball in the same place as it was when I started. Good times, real good times.

This year was a great year. It highlighted the other reason for going to university and that is to meet people and have a lot of crazy laughs and fun.

My fl atmates have all gone home now and I have many a place to stay when I decide to travel. All is good. Oh and bye the way I bought some golf clubs in the end and am cur-rently trying to perfect my visually disabled man’s swing!!!!

Sponsored Head Shave -Nelson

A huge crowd cheered and whooped as 10 people, staff

and students of Nayland College Stoke, had they’re head

shaved to raise a wonderful sum of $5140, with donations

still coming in! It was a great atmosphere as the fi rst

buzz of the clippers made contact with each head...many

of which had a full mop of hair...a big thank-you to all

involved!

Rotorua Member Shaves Head

On Friday the 5th of November (her last offi cial day in year 11) Sarah Marsden a CanTeen member from Rotorua shaved her hair off to raise funds for Can-Teen. Sarah decided she wanted to do her bit so set about getting sponsored by friends, family and school mates. Other members from Hamilton went to Rotorua to show their support along with her mum Johanna and sisters Kayla and Rachel. A few of us had a go at shaving her head too! Great fun! Sarah is known for her…shall I say “outgoing” personality and this was the fi rsttime a lot of us had seen her lost for words!!! Well done Sarah! A few weeks on when asked how it feels Sarah said “cold and my head gets burnt easily!!” Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap!

A Dutch woman, a Russian man, 4 Austrians, 4 Germans, 2 Swiss, 2 Chinese, 2 Icelanders, 5 Canadians, a Bangladeshi man, a Japanese woman, a Finish woman, 2 Greeks, 2 English, 3 Norwegians and a New Zealander met in Oslo Norway in September 2004. In Total there were 33 Survivors from 15 countries for the annual survivors meeting.

The day before all the survivors arrived the executive committee met for most of the day, we considered how we would like to fi t within the parent’s group and talked about lots of policy type stuff that we needed to consider for the future running of the group. The entire executive then met with the parent’s group executive and talked about our future together. We talked about the direction of the survivors group and basically agreed that we would like to continue being a side group of the parents group.

The survivors agenda had 4 sessions on it, these were: Supporting newly diagnosed children with cancer and their families (role playing etc, Presented by the executive committee), Setting up and maintaining a survivors group (Presented by myself), Hope (what it is and the power of it, Presented by Nicole Bruton of Canada, executive member), and feedback from a number of different countries about what they are doing with survivors in their countries. Of course we played the world-loved

introductory games and it turns out some of the ones we know are rather internationally known! We joined the ICCCPO group for the welcome, the ICCCPO dinner on the last night, and for the session “siblings and survivors”.

As part of my presentation, I showed the CanTeen DVD and had some copies of ‘Pulling Together’ for delegates to take away with them. They thought they were wonderful. It is an awesome experience to be able to share the CanTeen perspective with people from all over the world, some of which have very little available for the survivors in their country and none (who were present) who have an organisation that is developed as CanTeen is. Inline with the presentations that were given, I guess CanTeen and other established survivor organisations give others who attend these meetings the hope that they too can build such an organisation. From my presentation I will be developing some steps to creating a survivors organisation as requested by some delegates.

I look forward to the ICCCPO Survivors Group developing into a well establish group that is a source of information and an advocacy group for those setting up, and those already running survivors groups all over the world. There is still plenty to sort out, but each time the committee meet we are amazed at how much we achieve.

The reason why there were so many Canadians present at this years meeting was that the next meeting will be held in Vancouver, Canada from the 20th- 24th September 2005.

Prudence WalkerNational President CanTeenVice-Chair ICCCPO Survivor’s Group

My name is Shannon from Dunedin and along with Jona-than from Whakatane, we were sponsored by CanTeen to attend Outward Bound, I had typed up my report for the last magazine, but I clicked a button and then it went “Somewhere in cyberspace”, as my computer froze.

Outward Bound is an adventure for Teens (16 - 24 Yr. olds) in a team based environment. The teams are called watches and each watch is named after some famous Kiwi.

Each morning it was a case of early rise. For our watch it was around 5:45 a.m. for a 6:20 PT (Physical Torture), then as Jonathan said a 3k run after that a swim in the Marlborough Sounds (as it was the middle of winter the water was quite cold), after that it was (get this) a cold shower!!

The activities were not only physical but also mental and were there to push you to your extreme. Some of these were very challenging for me as there was a slight size difference with the other people in my group (me being the shortest and slimmest).

The easiest challenge for me was the ‘3 Night Solo’,

OUTWARD BOUND.through most of which I slept with a grumbling tummy (I missed my fi ll of 2min noodles). I hate raw carrots, the biscuits were small by my standards, the apples were ok, and the nuts and raisins only fi lled my big toes, but to my surprise the carrots went really quick as they disappeared while I was asleep (rabbits?, possums?, or possibly an-other of my watch mates came for a feed???).

The nightmare for my watch was the ‘3 day Sailing Trip’. This is because on the second night we had to row in the pouring rain and the freezing cold temperatures. We fast learnt a valuable lesson to calm down and trust one another.

I really enjoyed the rock climbing and the challenge of doing it blindfolded. This will now make it easier for my Outdoor activities unit before the end of the term. Maybe one up on my school mates.

Many thanks CanTeen for this marvelous experience. And good wishes to the CanTeeners who get this oppor-tunity in the future.

FEAR FACTOR COMES TO LUNCH!

Winner of the USA Fear Factor competition Mark Hewlett and the ZM team came to National offi ce with lunch for the staff and a masseuse. Maree our new (Auckland Paitent Support Co-ordinator) staff member entered a radio competition and she won it for the staff.

I can tell you it did a lot for staff morale. The younger girls are still talking about it or should I say Mark!

There was certainly no Fear Factor at CanTeen that day.

I am an ex-pat KIWI living on the Gold Coast. Our fi rst Xmas Card this year is from dear friends in Auckland. The picture is BEACH POHUTUKAWA by Greg Coxon. It is so beautifully coloured and so reminiscent of the beaches near our last home- town, Kerikeri. THANKS. Tell Greg I am about to frame it as a lasting image. Jeanette Forrester.

I have just looked at the cards. The perception of the young artists always surprises me - they are beautiful. They are sent overseas and give a real insight into the NZ landscape and lifestyle. Then there is the small subtle Christian presence in some of them – like stars on the beach or in the sky.

Young people, you are truly amazing!
