The first person to email Agent Hollar will win a surprise. The answer must be in the form of a question. I will give you one more hint:

What is _ _ _ _!

Agent Hollar Here, Can you believe we are at the end of October getting used to these crisp fall days. Daylight savings time is around the corner which allows more time for star gazing. You ever wonder why the stars are so much more brilliant when you are standing in 30 degrees below zero temperatures. November is about giving Thanks . I am thankful for all the charters I have received. I haven’t read them yet but will before November 15th. I know the added requirements of your secretaries minutes and treasurers reports were a challenge but hopefully that will become smoother as we move through this coming year. I am thankful for the record books we did receive and look forward to more in 2016 - record keeping is an important life skill, so is cursive writing which is no longer being taught in school. I personally will give out awards for any record book turned that has been completed in cursive writing. The educational system is failing us there. I am thankful the amazing amount of work each of you put in “to make the best better” for our youth. It is difficult to see those successes through the everyday challenges but they are there. We just need to open our eyes to see them. Many blessings.

Perspective in Photography

This year, I hope to highlight the topic of Perspective in photography. This month, we will learn what is perspective and what a bird’s eye and bugs eye perspective are.

First, what is perspective? Perspective refers to the relationships between objects in a photograph, such as the relative dis-tance and size of objects in a photograph. I also like to think of it as how we view the scene. In real life, we live in a 3-dimensional world, where there is length, width, and depth. In a photo there are only 2 dimensions—the picture is flat. To help photography “come to life” we must try to give a sense of depth. This is done in a variety of ways and helps turn good photos into outstanding photos.

For instance, as you take your fall scene photos if you are doing a landscape scene try to include something in the foreground as well as the background to create depth. See the following webpage for examples:

http://digital-photography-school.com/include-the-foreground-for-dramatic-landscapes/

Bug’s and Bird’s Eye View: (not pictures of bug’s and bird’s eyes…) To create photos for these fair book categories think of the perspective of each of the creatures: bugs generally are low to the ground, and close up to things. Your Bug’s Eye View photos should be close-ups, and/or from the ground looking up. Think about where a bug might be, and what a scene might look like to it. Lay on the ground, get up close, and play around with different views. For the Bird’s Eye View you are looking down from above. Ask yourself what would a bird see when it is flying or perched high in a tree? Generally, you are looking at distances and/or the ground, and from a higher point than normal. Try looking out a second story window at the ground, or use a ladder (with an adult assisting), or climb on some playground equipment. You still need to include some sort of interesting objects in the photo, but the perspective you use is important for these two categories.

For more information about perspective, and a sneak-peek at what might be covered in the next few months, check the following website for information or search for photography, perspective:

Wisconsin State Veterinarian To Allow Spring Pig Weigh-Ins After Two-Year Ban Excerpts pulled from the news release dated October 16, 2015

MADISON - Spring pig weigh-ins that usually take place in preparation for Wisconsin’s numerous county fairs will be allowed next year, according to Wisconsin's State Veterinarian. Previously, Dr. Paul McGraw, had banned the weigh-ins as a preventive action to control the spread of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv), Porcine Reproductive Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), and influenza.

Although this announcement might seem early, some fair boards are already planning for next spring. McGraw believes that commingling young pigs at spring weigh-ins is a high risk activity and would support fair boards that decide not to hold weigh-ins. But for those who do hold weigh-ins, he has a word of advice.

“Fair officials need to work with their show veterinarian to develop the best protocols to prevent spreading diseases,” That said, McGraw may revisit the ban if there are a significant number of new confirmed cases. Clark County Swine Committee has not made any definitive decision with this new information, stay posted.

Marla Lampi called the meeting to order at 7:30. Pledges were recited. Roll call was taken. Each club was to respond with “One thing your club did for national 4-H Week?” Many good ideas were shared. Secretary's Report was posted in the September Cloverleaf for review. Cindy Kolzow moved to accept the minutes with one correction. Maplewood Badgers cost for the bus was $1150 instead of $1500. Shannon Toufar seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report: Summer trip Invoices mailed out money due November 1st. The estimated cost of Clark County Summer Camps was handed out. Day Camp July 7th Overnight Camp June 29th-30 Extended Camp June 19th-22 Fair Food Stand: Joan Buchholz reported that everything should be final for report by next month. Because of a miscommunication, the September Budget was not presented. Question of cost of $285 for the Neillsville School for the volleyball tournament this year when we paid nothing in the past. Judy Morrow has questioned a school board member of the charge. We should have an answer soon. Unfinished Business: A sheet of fair comments and concerns was handed out. If anyone had other concerns or comments there was an opportunity to write them on a paper so they can be reviewed. Herdsmanship recommendation was that folks from the Extension, Fair Board, Ag & Extension committee will complete the herdsmanship papers. There was a request to enhance the “how” description to judge herdsmanship. Verbal agreement was evident. Some suggestions for better lighting especially in the swine barn area was discussed. Discussion on maybe a group of parents could work on that project. Leaders were asked if they were interested in changing the summer softball for the C League to kickball. The consensus was to stick to the softball program. Platt Book Committee has worked hard to come up with a plan for getting sponsorship for the Platt book. Each club was given a list of assigned business to contact before November 30th. There will be a signature page this year. For $25.00 a sponsor could get their name on a signature page. Concerns about having just asked for financial support for 4-H clubs and now going back so soon to ask for more money for the Platt Book. Chris did explain that the money from Platt Book sales is what funds trips and awards for members. Chris asked that names of identified youth in clubs that are interested in the 4-H Junior Leader organization be turned in to her. Cindy Kolzow moved to accept the By-laws. Lisa Artac seconded. Motion passed. Shannon Toufar moved to accept the Clark County Standing Rules. Jen Berg seconded. Motion passed. New Family Orientation was canceled due to lack of participation.

Do You Know What Is In Your Drinking Water??? This November Clark County UW-Extension and Land Conservation Department is teaming up with and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Center for Watershed Science and Education to offer Clark County residents another chance to participate in drinking water testing and education. The testing being offered includes nitrates, bacteria, pH, alkalinity, hardness, conductivity, corrosivity, chloride, arsenic, lead, copper, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, and the pesticide atrazine. More than 60-percent of Clark County residents get their drinking water from a private well. Homeowners, who use a private well and rely on groundwater for their drinking water, are responsible for making sure their water is safe to drink. Results from the 2014 Clark County Drinking Water Testing and Education Program show that 37% of the private wells tested in the county contained contaminants that made the drinking water unsafe.

Residents who would like to participate must pre-register by calling 715-743-5121. You will need to pick up a sample bottle on Thursday, November 12

th Friday, November 13

th at the UW-Extension Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.

Water samples must be returned on Monday, November 16

th to UW-Extension Office.

The reduced price testing of $50 will only be offered to the first 150 residents. However, anyone is welcome to sample their drinking water at any other time of the year at full price of $120. Pre-registration is required by calling the UW-Extension Office at 715-743-5121.
