July 22, 2014 ~ Volume 68 ~ Issue 29
As we began this Stewardship series and the Capital Fund Campaign, in an effort to better understand what God and the Bible has to say about money and where her heart might be concerning riches, Michal began reading some books we had on our shelves. I wanted to share an excerpt from one of those books by Randy Alcorn, the title of which is “Money, Possessions & Eternity.” This will be a two-part quote with the brief but incomplete answers in next week’s Pastor’s notes. Quote: “Were we the Bible’s editors, we might be tempted to cut out much of what it (the Bible) says about money and possessions. Anyone can see it devotes a disproportionate amount of space to the subject, right? When it comes to money and possessions, the Bible is sometimes redundant, often extreme, and occasionally shocking. It turns many readers away, making it a hard sell in today’s market-place. It interferes with our lives and commits the unpardonable sin – it makes us feel guilty. If we want to avoid guilt feelings, it forces us to invent fancy interpretations to get around its plain meanings. If the Bible were written today and judged by what it says about money and possessions, it would never be published. If it were published, it would be mercilessly banned by its reviewers and not see a second printing. We come to the Bible for comfort, not financial instruction. If we want to know about money, we’re more apt to pick up The Wall Street Journal or Fortunes, Forbes or Money. Scripture should concern itself with what’s spiritual and heavenly. Money is physical and earthly. The Bible is religious; money is secular. Let God talk about love and grace and brotherhood, thank you. Let the rest of us talk about money and possessions – and do whatever we want with them. How could the Bible’s Author and Editor justify devoting twice as many verses to money (about 2,350 of them) than to faith and prayer combined? The sheer enormity of Scripture’s teaching on this subject screams for our attention. And the haunting question is this – why? Why does God give us so much instruction on money and possessions? Considering everything else He could have told that we really want to know, why did the Savior of the world spend 15% of His recorded words on this one subject? Why did he say more about how we are to view and handle money and possessions than about any other single thing? Why? What did He know about money and possessions that we don’t?” END QUOTE Interesting perspective, isn’t it? To help us understand God’s teachings on money and possessions we have handed out a booklet by Dr. Kregg Hood, Rich Toward God. If you have not received one, please let the office know and we will get one to you. I hope you have been reading this booklet and engaging in conversations with your spouse or other individuals. Just as there are blessings when we are obedient to each of the spiritual disciplines God makes us aware of from His Word, there are blessings that are exceeding, great and precious that He wants to pour out upon us in this area of money and possessions. Let us all strive to stand firm in every area of our lives, stand firm in obedience which places us under God’s shower of blessings. In much love, Pastor Darrel

Prayer is an essential ministry at
First Christian Church not just
for our own members and the
needs within our congregation, but
also for those in our community
and those beyond our reach.
Therefore we invite you to share
your prayer requests with us. We
ask only that you have permission
from those whom you wish to
place in our Christian Visitor.
September 17th
thru September 23rd
commemorates the 227th year of the Signing of the Constitution of
the United States of America. With the fate of an emerging nation in their hands, American leaders
met behind closed doors at Philadelphia State House
for four sweltering months in the summer of 1787. They
were to create a government that would stand the test of
time. The Constitutional Convention delegates came
from different backgrounds. They all agreed on one
thing, America needed a strong framework to remain a free democracy, to form a central government
with branches. Those branches: Legislative – Executive – Judicial. The plan was unveiled September
1787. Study your Constitution; pray for our Country. Sincerely, Four Winds Chapter of the American
Revolution
Sing to Him, Sing Praises to Him; Speak of all His Wonders. 1 Chronicles 16:9
FEEL THE EXCITEMENT…FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH CHOIR PRACTICE IS

Night Meals.” Note that the day has been changed to TUESDAYS. The time for chow will
begin at 5:00 pm and end at 6:30 pm. The next scheduled meal will be on Tuesday,
September 30.
ROOTS “ALL STAFF” MEETING! This coming Wednesday, September 17th,
2014 at the Church Annex will be a ROOTS “All Staff” meeting from 6:00 pm
~ 7:20 pm. We really still need 5 more people to serve as circle group
leaders at Roots. This is similar to the helpers in our VBS program. You
have 5 students designated to you each night and you guide them through
each station (Games, Bible Lesson & Craft). It seems easy… but makes a
great impact in the lives of our youth! Please strongly consider serving in
this powerful ministry! If you feel the Lord tugging on your heart please
contact Chris Goetz @ 503-474-7965. God has really boosted the growth of our children’s programs
and we are really in need of willing Christians to serve! Please if you have the ability to make
yourself available Wednesday nights, while school is in session, it would be a real honor doing
ministry with you! Thanks, Education Committee
