We will use this space each week to share a reflection on the week’s readings for

the Good Book Club. These reflections are taken from a resource published by

the United Thank Offering. Bible Study Guides can be found in the pamphlet

rack in the Reception Area or online at http://www.goodbookclub.org/

resources/.

WEEK 1: JANUARY 7-13, 2019

Sherri Dietrich

UTO Board President, Diocese of Maine

READ: ROMANS 1:1-3:8

REFLECT:

Paul often begins his letters with his “credentials,” as he

does in Romans.

It’s a lot of information that must have been important

for his original readers to read, but it isn’t particularly

inspiring to us 2,000 years later.

We already know the story of Jesus and his disciples

who were empowered to spread Christianity through-

out the known world, and Paul doesn’t need to defend

his right to write about Christ and faith at this point.

But I am always moved by the greeting to his readers

that follows, which is usually some version of the one

in Romans 1:8: “I thank my God through Jesus Christ

for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed through-

out the world.” It may have been just the “Dear Read-

er” salutation of his age, but it’s lovely and it reminds

me both of all the people I love and of the eternal im-

portance of proclaiming our faith. Evangelism hasn’t

always been embraced by Episcopalians, and it can be

pretty scary to share your faith in a “post-Christian”

age, but Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has reminded

us that Christianity is indeed good news that’s too good

not to share.

Now that I’m the United Thank Offering Board presi-

dent, Paul’s greeting feels even more personal and sig-

nificant to me because it’s just how I feel about all of

the people who participate in UTO. UTO grants pro-

claim our faith throughout the world and help provide

buildings and programs that allow others to then pro-

claim their faith to their neighbors, and I thank my

God for every one of you.

For next week: Read Romans 3:9—5:21.

Christian Formation Task Force

With Ashley Simpson’s departure this summer for seminary*,

the Rector has put together a Christian Formation Task Force

to assist him in developing a job description for whomever

will succeed her. We will follow a similar pattern to the 2017

Director of Music search, gathering input from all areas of the

parish about hopes and dreams not only for our young people

but for all of the parish.

The Task Force is Susan Husson, Betsy Tayloe, Anne Morini,

Don Buhrmaster, Alice Witten, Betsy Jutras, Jason Thuringer,

Lisa Kafer, and Rick Schulhaus. The fist meeting will be Feb-

ruary 5th. The Rector’s goal is to have the position filled by

May and the new person be able to have a week or two of

overlap with Ashley before she departs.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to be in

touch with any member of the Task Force or with the Rev.

Paul Canady ([email protected] or

252.633.20109 ext. 102)

*Ashley is still exploring where she will go to seminary. Her aim is to make

that announcement by the end of March.

Attention Commission Leaders, Com-

mittee Chairpersons and Ministry

Leaders

Christ Church is a bustling hub of activity! We host

meetings, both for the church and the community, near-

ly every night of the week. Please be sure to be in touch

with Ellie Roberts, Director of Church Life, to make

sure your group is on the calendar and has a space to

meet when you want/need it. Even if your group has

been meeting the second Tuesday of the month since

James Reed was the Rector*, you need to be in touch

with Ellie to re-confirm the time, day, and location for

your group. This will also ensure that your program is

listed on the calendar in the Messenger and on our Web-

site (https://christchurchnewbern.com/calendar/).

Ellie can be reached at ellierob-

[email protected] or 252.633.2109 ext

Thank you so much for your commitment to Christ

Church and for your pledges. Giving Envelopes are

available in the Parish House. Please stop in and pick

up your box.

Friends of Christ Church Beginning soon, a new ministry will be

launched at Christ Church under the

umbrella of Pastoral Care. This ministry

will be called “Friends of Christ

Church”. The purpose of this ministry

is to visit homebound parishioners and

those who are alone. Both men and

women are needed as visitors. This min-

istry will resemble the Silver Shepherds

of the past.

Visitors will share the gift of God’s love with those they vis-

it. These visits will help parishioners to stay connected to

Christ Church and its people. Please consider this oppor-

tunity prayerfully. The two ingredients needed are a bit of

time and a willingness to serve others,

Please call Ann Bustard at 252-636-2885, or e-mail an-

[email protected] if you wish to serve God by visit-

ing your sisters and brothers- you will be blessed!

Join us in the Library on Wednesday January 16, 2019 at

5:00 pm for information and handouts. The meeting will

last no more than an hour (5-6 pm). We look forward to

seeing you there!

Saint Elizabeth ECW

The St. Elizabeth's Chapter will meet on

Monday, January 14 at 10 am in the Parish

House. Our speaker will be our own Cliff

Badgley, and after the meeting we will go to

lunch at a local restaurant. All are welcome!
