RDA translated: record numbering from first issued piece, when possible If publication of the resource has ceased or is complete and the first and last issues, parts, or iterations are available, record the dates of publication of those issues, parts, or iterations, separated by a hyphen. RDA translated: record numbering from last issued piece, when possible Slide 5 Recording Dates (continued) If publication of the resource has ceased or is complete and the last issue, part, or iteration is available, but not the first, record the publication date of the last issue, part, or iteration, preceded by a hyphen. 260 __ , $c 1997. For an integrating resource, supply the date of the last update if it is considered to be important. 260 __ , $c 19951998 [updated 1999] (where first and last published iterations of an updating loose-leaf are available; date of last update known) Slide 6 Same Date for Everything? If the date of publication is the same for all issues, parts, or iterations, record only that date as the single date. 260 __ , $c 1997. Slide 7 No Date Available? Supply an approximate date or dates of publication. [1998]- (Earliest issue available: v. 1, no. 3, July 1998) 1997-[2000] (Last part not available but information about ending date known.) [1988-1991] (First and last issues not available but information about beginning and ending dates known.) Slide 8 No clue about date? If the first and/or last issue, part, or iteration is not available, supply an approximate date or dates of publication If date or dates cannot be approximated, do NOT record date(s) of publication: Multi-part resources, use [date of publication not identified] Single part monographs, use [date of publication not identified] Tillett, Barbara B. and Judith A. Slide 9 Series Statement (RDA 2.12) Slide 10 Title proper of series and subseries RDA 2.12.2 and 2.12.10 Title proper of series = the chief name of a series (i.e., the title normally used when citing the series) Series added entry (830 field) Title proper of subseries = chief name of a subseries (i.e., the title normally used when citing the subseries) Series added entry (830 field) Tillett, Barbara B. and Judith A. Kuhagen. American Library Association Midwinter Meeting. Boston, MA. 15 January 2010. RDA Test Train the Trainer Module 3. Slide 11 Title proper of series and subseries Source for title proper of series is whole resource Sources for title proper of subseries are (in order of preference): the series title page another source within the resource itself (see RDA 2.2.2) one of the other sources of information specified under 2.2.4 Requires note Basic instructions on recording titles in RDA 2.3.1 Tillett, Barbara B. and Judith A. Kuhagen. American Library Association Midwinter Meeting. Boston, MA. 15 January 2010. RDA Test Train the Trainer Module 3. Slide 12 Numbering within series and subseries RDA 2.12.9 and 2.12.17 Numbering within series = a designation of the sequencing of a part or parts within a series 490/830 $v Numbering within subseries = a designation of the sequencing of a part or parts within a subseries 490/830 $v Tillett, Barbara B. and Judith A. Kuhagen. American Library Association Midwinter Meeting. Boston, MA. 15 January 2010. RDA Test Train the Trainer Module 3. Slide 13 Numbering within series and subseries Source for numbering of series is the whole resource (RDA 2.12.9) Sources for numbering of subseries are (in order of preference): the series title page another source within the resource itself (see RDA 2.2.2) one of the other sources of information specified under 2.2.4 Requires note Guidelines are generally the same as those for Numbering of serials Tillett, Barbara B. and Judith A. Kuhagen. American Library Association Midwinter Meeting. Boston, MA. 15 January 2010. RDA Test Train the Trainer Module 3. Slide 14 Numbering of Serials RDA 2.6 Slide 15 General instructions Transcribe terms and months as they appear on resource (RDA 2.6.1, 1.7). Record numerals as they appear on resource (RDA 1.8.2). 362 0_ $a Volume X, number 1- 362 0_ $a January 2010- Substitute numerals for numbers expressed as words. 362 1_ Began with: Volume 1. (when issue says volume one) Tillet, Barbara B. and Judith A. Kuhagen. RDA Test Train the Trainer Module 3. 2010. Microsoft Powerpoint file. Slide 16 Ordinal numbers(RDA 1.8.5) Record ordinal numbers as numerals in the form 1 st, etc. 362 1_ Began with: 1 st (when issue says First) When recording ordinal numerals taken from a source in a language other than English, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, record them as numerals, following the usage of the language if ascertainable. French: 1 er, 1 re, 2 e, 3 e German: 1., 2., 3., etc. Slide 17 Numeric/alphabetic designation For alternative designation (i.e. parallel numbering), record as instructed, preceded by an equals sign. (RDA 2.6.6.3, D.1.2.4.3) 362 1_ Began with: Volume 10 = number 40 If the first issue or part of a sequence lacks numbering, supply a numeric/alphabetic designation based on the pattern and enclose it in brackets (RDA 2.6.2.3, 2.2.4, LCPS 2.2.4). Complex or irregular numbering should also be noted in the 515 field (RDA 2.20.5.4). Slide 18 Chronology Transcribe months as they appear on resource (RDA 2.6.1.4, 1.7). 362 1_ Began with: January 2010 362 1_ Began with: Jan. 2010 362 1_ Began with: OCT 2009 362 0_ Volume 1, number 1 (January 2010)- 362 0_ V. 1, n. 1 (January 2010)- Slide 19 More on Chronology Substitute a slash for a hyphen if the first and/or last issue covers multiple years (RDA 2.6.1.4 exception) : Example: Issue says: 2009-2010 362 1_ Began with: 2009/2010 If designation consists of a year and a number that is part of the year, record the year before the number (RDA 2.6.2.3). Example: Issue says : 1-2009 362 1_ Began with: 2009-1. Slide 20 One more thing on designations When both numeric/alphabetic AND chronological designations are present, enclose the date in parentheses at the end of the note (RDA D.1.2.4.3). 362 1_ Began with: Volume 1, number 1 (January 2010) Slide 21 New series Include wording that denotes a new sequence in numbering. If not supplied, add new series in brackets before enumeration. (RDA 2.6.2.3, 2.2.4, LCPS 2.2.4). Example: 362 0_ Volume 1, number 1 (January 1980) volume 30, number 12 (December 2010); new series volume 1, number 1 (January 2011) - Slide 22 Numbering within Series (RDA 2.12.9) Slide 23 Numbering within Series If a book has numbering within the series, transcribe that in 490 $v from any source in the book (RDA2.12.9.2) Transcribe numbers, letters, other characters, dates, and caption terms as they appear in source (RDA 2.12.9.1, RDA 2.12.9.3, RDA 1.8.2, LCPS 1.8.2) Do not capitalize a term that is part of the numbering within a series (RDA 2.12.9) or subseries (RDA 2.12.17) unless the guidelines given under A.10-A.55 applicable to the language involved require capitalization. Capitalize other words and alphabetic devices according to the usage on the resource (A.7). Substitute a slash for a hyphen, as necessary, for clarity. Slide 24 Exceptions to Take What You See in Series Statement Record words for numerals as arabic numerals (RDA1.8.3) 490 0_ ; $v 100 (instead of one hundred) Record arabic numerals for ordinals expressed as words following the usage of a particular language (RDA 1.8.5, LCPS 1.8.5). 1 st = first Record both numeric and chronologic designation in $v, if present (RDA 2.12.9.4) 490 0_ $v volume 3, number 2 (September 1997) Slide 25 More Exceptions If series numbering restarts each year, record the year first in $v, then the number (RDA 2.12.9.3). Use square brackets to record an inferred series number on a book that lacks series numbering but gives numbering for other publications in the series (LCPS 2.12.9). Include any wording to differentiate one sequence of numbering within the same series from another. (RDA 2.12.9.6, RDA 2.2.4). 490 0_ ; $v new series, v.3 490 0_ ; $v [3 rd series], no. 1 Slide 26 And still more For multiple series numbers representing separate sequences for the same series, record all in the same 490 $v. (RDA 2.12.9.7). 490 0_ ; $v new series, 1 = 235 (where new series, 1 is designated for a new sequence and 235 continues the old) Transcribe any numbering or date integrated within or grammatically linked to the title proper of the series as part of it (RDA 2.12.2.3, LCPS 2.12.9, RDA 2.12.9.3) 490 1_ $aThe twentieth Buckendale lecture 830 _0 $aBuckendale lecture ; $v 20th Tillet, Barbara B. and Judith A.
