Following the way of Jesus and heeding the counsel of Paul, we shall be able to walk in the way of God’s eternal purpose for us and all creation. And the time to do so is now. Again, we hear from the Apostle Paul: ‘you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires” (Romans 13:11-14).

CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS SEPTEMBER 2012

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

WHAT TIME IS IT?

Schools are in session. The daylight hours grow shorter. The beginning of Autumn is just around the corner. The calendar suggests that we have entered the month of September. Chronologically, we do know what time it is. But I wish to speak to another component of time; that is, time as it relates to the unveiling of God’s eternal plan and purpose, particularly as it is directed in and through our faith relationship to and with Christ. Our relationship with Christ is to be purposeful and directional. Our trust in the work of Christ Jesus is to impact in a consistent way how we are to think and live. In Christ, we are to live in the hope of salvation and act lovingly in the way of peace and justice. And the time for such thoughts and actions is now. Because of our trust in the way of Christ, the present time is crucial to the unfolding of God’s eternal will. At the present moment we are called to live fully according to the purposes revealed to us in Christ. The present time is not a time for half-hearted faith or selfish ambitions. There is an urgency that calls upon us to follow Christ consistently and continuously, setting aside those things that run contrary to God’s hope in and for us. Now is the time to rid from ourselves all thoughts and actions that strain and harm our relationships with one another, that adversely impact the health of our planet, and that seeks a path of darkness and evil. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, we are to “let (our) love be genuine, hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good…rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, and be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:3,12).

We are at a moment of urgency. Now is not the time to be lukewarm or occasional Christians. Now is the time to wear our faith continuously and purposefully—to live and act as Jesus has taught us, to love nonjudgmentally and unconditionally, to put an end to all thoughts and ideas that seek to divide us one from another, to rid the world of evil, and to share the gospel of Jesus in all situations. The time is now! Our lives depend on it. Live in and by the power of god’s grace received in and through Christ which is eternal and not by the fleeting and failing power of human desire that, at best, is temporal and whose rewards ultimately fade into the dust. --Pastor John

The balding middle-aged man asked his barber, "Why charge me the full price for cutting my hair,

there's so little of it." "Well, "said the barber, "actually I make little charge for cutting it. What you're

paying for is my searching for it!"

Sunday, October 7 A day full of fun--a day filled with enjoyment

October 7 will be a busy Sunday. Not only will it be Blanket Sunday, but we will also celebrate Harvest Home and Homecoming. Following the service, we will have a congregational potluck and an afternoon filled with merriment. You are invited to bring yourselves, your family and friends, as well as a covered dish to share and table settings for your family/guests. We will supply the drink. We will play bingo and other fun things. If you have a game you would like to play, please bring it along too. Plan on joining us for a day full of worship, food, fun and fellowship.

BLANKET SUNDAY

When you make and send a Quilt to Lutheran World Relief (LWR), you are not only comforting someone you have never met, but providing an object that is useful in ways you probably never imagined. In addition to being a cozy, clean new bed cover, it can be:

a baby carrier, tied around a mother’s back; a market display, spread on the ground and piled with vegetables; a sack for transporting those goods to market; a sunshade; a shawl; and most importantly a constant reminder that someone, far away, cares a lot.

Through LWR we can provide wool blend or cotton blankets to those in need. The blankets cost $5 each. You can put your love for your sisters and brothers into action by providing the warmth of a blanket. Simply use the envelope that will be in your bulletin on Blanket Sunday, October 7, or put a donation in your regular offering envelope and mark the designated gift line, “Blankets”. This special

4

offering will help LWR provide blankets for people who suffer from war or natural disasters all around the world.

We will also be accepting donations of new or slightly-used blankets and will send them, along with the quilts that have been made by our church women and the school kits which have been assembled, to Baltimore, Maryland for distribution at home and in foreign countries.

In 2011, LWR sent $12.6 million worth of Quilts & Kits to more than 623,000 people in 26 different countries

LWR is challenging Lutherans across the U.S. to donate 500,000 Quilts

in 2013 to send around the world to people in need…an increase of approximately 25 percent or 100,000 Quilts over previous years

NOTE! Even though we have an annual “Blanket Sunday” to focus on blankets and provide special envelopes for contributing to the purchase of LWR blankets you don’t have to wait for that one day. You can contribute at any time by indicating “blankets” on the designated gift line of your offering envelope.

HARVEST HOME We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land,

But it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand:

He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain,

the breezes and the sunshine, and soft, refreshing rain.

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above;

Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

There will be just one service on Sunday, October 7. It will be a service where we will gather together to offer our heartfelt thanks and praise for the bounty and variety of God’s creation...the succession of the seasons, the productiveness of the soil, the harvest of land and sea. We will also be having a food drive and we ask that you bring one or more non-perishable items along to worship that day. We have all been truly blessed and we ask that you share your blessings with those less fortunate. This special Sunday the sanctuary will be decorated with glories of the harvest. If you can provide any of the following items to help us do that, please have them here by 9:00 a.m. on October 6.

Crates - Baskets Pumpkins - Gourds

Indian Corn – Corn Ears - Corn Stalks Fresh Fruit – Fresh Vegetables

Fall Leaves – Fresh or Dried Flowers Home Canned Items

Be sure to have your name on all items, so they can be returned to you.

HOPE’S HAVEN

HOPE’S HAVEN FOOD BANK

On Wednesday, September 26, members of the Church in Society Committee will be making Ham & Cheese and Turkey & Cheese sandwiches as a fundraiser for the Hope’s Haven Food Bank. The sandwiches will sell for $2.50 each.

You can help by taking sandwich orders for this very important ministry. Order forms are included in this newsletter and additional forms can be obtained from Sue Pantaleo, Janet Hileman, Bev Catherman, Kim Blyler, or Margie Dunkle. Monies raised will be used to purchase food for our food bank. We are currently helping 50-60 families a week. All help and donations will be greatly appreciated. The Hope’s Haven food bank is seeking donations of disposable plastic containers (The kind you get salads, pies, cookies, etc. in at the grocery store). Talk to Bev Catherman or Janet Hileman if you want more information.

HOPE’S HAVEN CLOTHING BANK

Hope’s Haven will start accepting fall and winter clothing the second week of September, so if you have anything you no longer want, please keep our clothing bank in mind.

They are still in need of size 3T & 4T clothing.

Help is needed to help sort and fold clothing on Tuesday mornings for about one to two hours. If you are able to help, please talk to Sue Pantaleo.

If you came and you found a strange man teaching your kids to punch each other,

or trying to sell them all kinds of products, you'd kick him right out of the house,

but here you are; you come in and the TV is on, and you don't think twice about it.

CHOIR PRACTICE RESUMES

Top Ten Reasons Why Men Should Join The Choir . . . .

10. Rehearsals are two Thursday nights a month. This means that for those few hours, you will significantly reduce your risk of contracting tendonitis from nonstop operation of a television remote control or computer mouse.

9. Because you wear a choir robe every Sunday, you are liberated from a task many men find quite challenging: finding clothes that match properly.

8. From your special vantage point every Sunday, in which you look out at the entire congregation from the choir seats, you will develop interesting new hobbies. Among these is a little guessing game called "Who's Praying, Who's Sleeping?"

7. On the other hand, sitting in full view of 100-200 people on a weekly basis makes it much less likely that you yourself will give in to a chronic lack of sleep. Although it has been known to happen.

6. If you think your singing in the shower sounds good now, just wait till you've been singing with us for a few weeks.

5. Singing in a choir is one of the few activities for men that does not require electronic equipment or expensive power tools. This could be good for the family budget.

4. For the fitness buffs, singing in the Choir is not only heart healthy, its soul healthy. But there are no monthly membership fees, and it's a lot easier on the knees than jogging.

3. If you think you've done everything there is to do, and there are no great challenges left in life, try singing with us and staying on pitch, guys.

2. Choir rehearsal lasts half as long as a professional football game, but is at least twice as satisfying. (Don't worry, though, the rehearsals are on Thursday, not Monday Nights.)

1. When people ask you whether you've been behaving yourself, you can say with the utmost sincerity, "Hey, I'm a Choir Boy.

Chancel Choir practice will resume the regular schedule…the second and fourth Thursday…on September 13 at 7:00 p.m.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE…

…between a man of the world and a person in the church who lives like a man of the world?

…between the skeptic who does not believe the Bible and negligent Christian who never reads it?

…between those who do not believe in Bible classes and those who never attend a class?

…between the atheist who supports no church and the member who will not support the one to which he

belongs?

SENIOR MEMBER DINNER

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the heck happened!

The fellowship committee invites our “older folks” (anyone born in or prior to 1950), along with a guest, to attend our annual Senior Member Dinner. This year’s dinner will be held on Sunday, October 21. The meal will be served at noon, which will allow time for some fellowship after worship and before the meal begins. Reservations are not necessary, but would be very helpful to us in planning the meal. Just fill out the attached and return it to the church office. Mark your calendars and plan to be present for a tasty meal and good fellowship. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Baby News Correspondent When a new baby is born to a member of the congregation, the responsibility of the baby news

correspondent is to contact the family and get “vital statistics” and then write a short article for the newsletter. Talk to Margie if you would like to tackle this position.

2. Greeters, Lay Readers, Communion Assistants, Ushers and Sound System Operators. Our list of people willing to do these jobs keeps dwindling. Will you help? Sign up on the

attached “volunteer form” and drop them on Margie’s desk or put them in the offering plate.

Communions Communions for all confirmed members must be recorded in the parish register annually. If you do not commune on a regular basis, we ask that you fill out a communion record card (one per year is all we need) so we know you have communed. The cards are located in the racks on the back of the pews. Cards may be put in the offering plate or handed to an usher.

Have a Favorite Hymn? Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy many of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the “Public Domain”. It’s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and the Worship and Music Committee will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions that copyright laws permit. Please put the title or first line of your song(s) on a piece of paper and give it to Margie, or any member of the Worship and Music Committee (Bev Catherman, Paula Christy, Gary Hackenberg, Judy Mecouch, Barry Spangler, or Idella Zimmerman). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hymn Request -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEWS OF MEMBERS & FRIENDS

Condolences We offer our condolences to Orvis & Betty Wallace and their family following the death of his brother, Earl Wallace, on July 3.

Weddings Congratulations and God’s richest blessings to Susannah Christy and Douglas Rayburn who were married at Azol Fives in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on May 27. Please pray for them as they begin their life together.

Grandparents Lee & Kathy Spangler are pleased to announce the birth of two grandsons, as well as their first granddaughter. On Monday, June 16, at 7:04 a.m. Mason Washington Neidig was born to Penny (Spangler) & Clint Neidig. He was 7 lb. 14 oz and 19 inches long. He has beautiful dark hair and looks a lot like his father. He is named after his daddy (they both share the same middle name). Big brother, Jonathan, likes his new little brother and loves the train set Mason “gave” him too. The new family of four are doing well. On Saturday, June 30, at 4:12 p.m. Leif Benjamin Moyer was born to Ginger (Spangler) and Orin Moyer. He was 8 lbs. 1 oz. and 21 inches long. He has brown hair and looks a lot like his dad and brother. He is named after Orin’s grandfather (the middle name of Benjamin). The first name Leif is pronounced with a long A sound. Big brother, Reeves likes his little brother and gently squeezes his toes. Weighing in at 6 lb. 1 oz., Whitney Elisabeth Clark was born on July 28 to Sheila (Spangler) and Caleb Clark. She has already taken the breath away from her daddy, and has a very proud mother and excited big brother, Ethan. A verse from Luke 1:37 states that with God all things are possible, and that is certainly true for the Clark family.

In the mailbag

DEAR FRIENDS AT CHRIST’S UNITED Thank you so much for the get-together to wish us well on our new venture. We became members here when we moved to the area in 1973 and always felt welcome. Sandy and Dave were married her. Sue and Marti went through confirmation classes and were active in Sunday school and youth group. Sterling and I serve on committees and several terms on church council. We grew in our faith over the years and hopefully made a difference by our participation. Saturday, June 30, was moving day with much help from our family. Three of our grandsons arrived with the moving truck about 8:15 a.m. and after breakfast set to work. They, along with Roger Dunkle, loaded the truck in record time. Sterling’s truck and my car were full and we were on the way boy 11:15 a.m. We arrived at the Village at Sprenkle Drive about 1:15 p.m. Other family members, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren had been here all morning getting our cottage ready for us. They put the curtain rods up and all the window treatments, curtains, drapes, and blinds were in place. The cupboards, cabinets, etc. were wiped out and ready to be filled. The Village had lunch in the refrigerator and our daughters had also brought food and drinks. After everyone had something to eat, they set to work unloading the moving truck and our vehicles. With the many hands and bodies, the task of unloading moved along quickly. The moving truck was returned before 3:00 p.m. The furniture was placed in the proper rooms. Some of the many boxes and totes were unpacked. Others were put in closets, storage areas, etc.—left for us to take care of in the days ahead. By Friday, July 6, most everything was unpacked and had found a home. We’re still re-arranging some things and haven’t found others. We are settled in and doing things at our pace. We are grateful central air-conditioning as it was extremely hot last week. This is a very nice, quiet community and everyone has been very helpful. Our address is: 1706 Oakes Ave, York, Pa. 17404 Telephone # 717-767-2183. You are welcome to come visit us anytime.

Thank you! GREEN THUMBS NEEDED FOR SYNOD OFFICE WORK PARTY Two years ago, the Upper Susquehanna Synod office in Lewisburg (500 Reitz Blvd.) underwent improvements to address drainage issues around the property. The work interrupted the landscaping around the building (and, truth be told, only minimal upkeep of existing landscaping has been done for several years now). We’re about to change that! A Work Party will be held on Saturday, September 8, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., to remove dead and overgrown shrubs, trim, edge, plant, and mulch. All willing hands are welcome! If you can make it for some or all of the day, please contact Pastor Beth Ann Stone ([email protected]; 570-524-9778). Lunch will be provided for volunteers. In case of rain, the party will be postponed to Saturday, September 15. Thanks for your partnership!

NOTES OF APPRECIATION

“Volunteers are gold”. Volunteers are the most valuable commodities in ministry. Without them, nothing would get done in our churches. We are fortunate to have the kind of dedicated people that we do.

THANK YOU TO… …Roger Dunkle & Eugene Hassinger for painting the roof of the shed. …Jim Boop for furnishing the paint for the roof of the shed. …Mary Hassinger & Ethel Wenrich for selecting Christ’s United as a recipient for “Choice Dollars” through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Thrivent Choice program. …EVERYONE who took any part in helping with the fair stand, be it cooks, servers, cashiers, bakers, donors, clean-up, dishwashers, and diners. We are truly blessed by God and enriched in our fellowship by the many people of this congregation who volunteer their time and their talent in small and large ways for the benefit of this church and for the advancement of the gospel of Christ in this place Thank you for the gifts for my graduation! I’m sorry I couldn’t make it for the graduate celebration; I left for 4-H camp that morning. Sincerely,

Jennifer My thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers following my heart surgery. Special thanks to Pastor John for the visit. Recovery continues—greatly helped by your support. --Thank you again, Tom Mecouch

NO WONDER GOD LOVES CHILDREN

When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds

that are going to take over my yard.

My kids see flowers for Mom

and blowing white fluff you can wish on.

*

When I look at a homeless person and he smiles at me,

I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away.

My kids see someone smiling at them

and they smile back.

*

When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don’t have much rhythm

so I sit self consciously and listen.

My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words.

If they don't know them, they make up their own.

*

When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it.

I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk.

My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it

until they fall to the ground laughing.

*

When I pray I say Thee and Thou and grant me this, give me that.

My kids say, "Hi God!!! Thanks for my toys and my friends.

Please keep the bad dreams away tonight.

Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."

*

When I see a mud puddle, I step around it.

I see muddy shoes and clothes and dirty carpets.

My kids sit in it. They see dams to build,

rivers to cross and worms to play with.

*

Sometimes I wonder if we are given kids to teach…or to learn from.

No wonder God loves the little children!!

SCHOOL KITS

A school kit may provide the only supplies for children returning to school after the disruption of war. School kits help parents continue their children's education, even while living in a refugee camp, for example. A school kit may also be used in adult literacy classes.

Your group can also help LWR get school kits to the people who need them by donating a brick on the Good Samaritan Quilt Plaza or by making a contribution to the Project Comfort Fund.

Review the General Assembly Instructions before collecting items for the school kits.

Include the following items in each school kit:

Notebooks of wide- or college-ruled paper approximately 8" x 10 ½" totaling 150-200 sheets (if using 70-sheet notebooks, please include three); no loose-leaf paper

One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)

One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other

One pencil sharpener

Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band

One eraser approximately 2 ½" long

12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit into the school kit bag)

One box of 16 or 24 crayons

One sturdy cloth bag approximately 12" X 14" with cloth handles or drawstring closure (see below for downloadable patterns)

Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition.

Remove any excess packaging and pack items in the bag, fold the handles over, and secure with two large rubber bands or tie with yarn.
