WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT LOVE
Look at the Crucifix the next time you're in a Catholic Church. Really look at it. I can assure you that didn't feel good. And yet, it was the single greatest act of love the world has ever known. Love always involves feelings. They're just not always good feelings
Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love.
We wish to extend a heartfelt
thank you to Jane Dostal and
her deceased husband Vern
who had set up a memorial
account at St. Mary ’ s that
paid for the installation of the
are conditioning in the sanc-
tuary of the church. You gen-
erosity and consideration will be appreciated not
only in the moment for but for those clergy who will
follow to be able to celebrate Mass in comfortable
conditions beneath the warm lights of the sanctu-
ary.
We are looking for

The Seventh Virtue: Kindness
Practicing the virtue of Kindness will help us avoid the lures of the deadly sin of Envy.
The qualities of compassion and satisfaction can be seen in person practicing the vir-
tue of kindness. Kindness also displays a genuine concern for the well being of others, a pleasant disposition, and gentleness.
Now the big question regarding kindness... Parents spend many hours trying to teach children to be kind. Children are, by nature, and so are adults, "me-o-centric." We try
to teach children to share, to play nicely with each other, to say, "Please," and "Thank-you." And that's great! That's what adults and parents should teach children.
BUT, we don't always model that behavior well...do we? Some, as they get older, grow
to become cynical, grumpy, bitter...dare I say, "Envious?" We fall victim to the deadly sin of envy, exactly one of the sins we strive to avoid. Exactly the opposite of what we
try to teach our children. How confusing is that??!!
"Be kind, just as your heavenly Father is kind."
Are you trying to cut down on
the paper you use? Is the
check you write to our parish
one of the few checks that you
write anymore? You can give
greener by using our Online
Giving Program. Simply go to the home page our
parish website at www.stmarygrinnell.com and scroll
down to the bottom of the page. You can set up the
amount that you would like to give on a schedule
that meets your needs and you never have to worry
about writing another check, forgetting your enve-
lope, or having cash in your wallet. Our parish
greatly appreciates all those who choose to give in
this manner as it helps us maintain a consistent
cash flow and pay all of our bills in a timely manner.

SAINT MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES
June 21, 2018
Present: Dennis Crawford, Renny Crawford, Crystal DeNeve, Brad Donohoe, John Grennan, Fr. Ron Hodges, Sharon
Mealey, Patsy Probasco, Charles Willenbring, and Jennifer Williams
1. Opening Prayer led by Fr. Ron Hodges.
2. Old Business
Baskets for Collection: After feedback from ushers and the congregation, the Parish Council voted unanimously to
reintroduce the practice of having ushers use baskets with long handles to gather the collection during Mass. The
practice of having parishioners pass a basket within the pews will end.
Parish Council Elections: Congratulations to Renny Crawford, Brad Donohoe, and Jennifer Williams, who were
elected by the congregation earlier this month to serve three-year terms on the Parish Council. Jan Phelps and Deb
Schulte will be available to serve on the Parish Council if any Council member cannot complete his or her term.
Hog Raffle: Hog raffle tickets for the first two pigs have sold out. Sales for the third hog will continue after masses
and sales for a fourth hog will begin later in the summer. Crystal De Neve of the Faith Formation Committee will
also be selling hog raffle tickets at the Farmer’s Market in Grinnell on Thursdays. Dennis Crawford is looking for
volunteers to help with the sales – contact the Parish Office at [email protected] or 641-236-7486 if you
can help.
3. New Business
Parish Council Officer Elections: The Parish Council unanimously elected Dennis Crawford to serve as council
president, Bill Gruman to serve as vice president, and John Grennan to serve as secretary through June 2019.
Time and Talent Survey. Jennifer Williams reported on the Stewardship Committee’s plans to distribute the parish’s
Time and Talent Survey for 2018. Jennifer and her committee have worked to create a shorter, more streamlined sur-
vey for when it is distributed. In the Council’s discussion of the survey, Sharon Mealey recommended that the sur-
vey be distributed as Masses during a weekend in the first half of September, a time when parishioners have returned
from summer vacations. Dennis Crawford suggested that the Parish Council should distribute the survey at the same
time each year. Crystal DeNeve talked about the possibility of finding Faith Formation teachers through this survey,
but acknowledged it might difficult to do so if the survey is distributed in September. Father Ron asked whether the
distribution of the survey could happen during the Catholic Church’s Stewardship Week so homilists could tie dis-
cussion of the survey with Gospel readings.
Action Taken on Time & Talent Survey: The Parish Council recommended that Jennifer distribute the survey to the
chairs of all Parish Council committees to see if they have any concerns or suggestions. The Council also recommended
that the survey be distributed during the second weekend in September (September 8-9). The Council will confirm this
distribution schedule at a future meeting.
Friends of International Harmony Organization in Grinnell. Father Ron reported on the efforts of the Friends of
International Harmony Organization, a collaboration between members of the First Presbyterian Church, Saint
Mary’s Church, and other Grinnell community members. This organization is working to establish a humanitarian
response plan in the event that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency conducts a raid against un-
documented workers in Grinnell similar to the raid that occurred in Mount Pleasant earlier this year. David Isch, a
member of the First Presbyterian congregation, has coordinated this group’s discussions. In the Parish Council’s dis-
cussion of Friends of International Harmony, Father Ron indicated that he and some Saint Mary’s parishioners have
participated in the group’s meetings in June. He emphasized the group is exclusively concerned with providing aid
to families in our community that could be separated or otherwise impacted in an enforcement action—the group
does not engage in political action or protests related to U.S. immigration policies. He also emphasized the Catholic
Church’s consistent messages regarding compassion toward immigrants, including messages from the Diocese of
Davenport and Pope Francis. In his discussion with leaders of the First Presbyterian Church, Father Ron has sug-
gested that Saint Mary’s Church could offer to host potential post-raid rapid response efforts. Saint Mary’s Parish
would not be expected to independently raise money for these efforts, and the scope of the response is expected to be
commensurate with the small size of the immigrant population in Grinnell. He also indicated that he believed the
church’s new Parish Center could accommodate these efforts without disrupting parish community events.
He concluded by asking the Parish Council to make a recommendation.
Action Taken on Friends of International Harmony: Patsy Probasco made a motion that Saint Mary’s could host
Friends of International Harmony’s emergency response efforts if an immigration enforcement raid occurs in Grinnell.
Renny Crawford seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Father Ron said he would update the Council regard-
ing Friends of International Harmony efforts at a future meeting
Saint Mary’s Community Open House: At a previous meeting, Saint Mary’s Fundraising Committee voted to host
a Community Open House on Sunday, July 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Open House is designed to welcome members
of the Grinnell community who are interested in seeing the church renovations and new parish center. Crystal De
Neve expressed some concerns about whether the parish center will be ready to accept outside visitors and asked
whether the Open House could wait until after the beginning of the School Year. The Parish Council acknowledged
these concerns, but Patsy Probasco explained that the Fundraising Committee wanted to hold the event on July 15 to
make sure to capture community interest in the renovations.
Action Taken on Open House: The Parish Council agreed to move forward with the event on July 15, and different
Parish Council Committee leaders will be on hand to talk to members of the community. The church will advertise the
July 15 Open House in the Grinnell Herald-Register—please encourage anyone you know who might be interested in
seeing the new church to join us.
Scheduling Parish Picnic and Parish Breakfast. Father Ron recommended that Saint Mary’s hold its annual picnic
in September, as one of the purposes of the picnic is to welcome new Grinnell College students. Patsy Probasco
pointed out that the parish has committed to hold its annual breakfast in September, which will be a busy month with
Saint Mary’s hosting its Blue Mass and with parishioners’ participation the Christ Our Life Conference in Des
Moines.
Action Taken on Parish Picnic and Parish Breakfast Schedule: The Parish Council voted unanimously to set aside
the dates of Sunday, September 9 and Sunday, September 16 for the Parish Picnic and Parish Breakfast Events. Dennis
Crawford, Patsy Probasco, and Al Frischmeyer will work on confirming which of these two events will occur on Sep-
tember 9 and which will occur on September 16. The schedule will be confirmed at a future Parish Council meeting.
Corn Boil Event Later in the Summer. Brad Donohoe indicated that Saint Mary’s will be holding a Corn Boil
Event, possibly in August. Look for more details soon.
4. Finance Council Report: Patsy Probasco reported on the Finance Committee meeting of June 20. The Council:
Discussed purchasing a new fire alarm system for the rectory, but has not made a final decision.
Met with Craig Arendt, who handles Saint Mary’s wealth management strategy at Lincoln Savings. The Council is
considering, possible changes to the church’s investment strategy, but has not made any final decisions.
Spoke about the finalization of the church’s mortgage, which Father Ron signed on June 21. More information about
the terms of the mortgage will appear in a future bulletin. Father Ron indicated that if everyone in the church meets
their pledges, Saint Mary’s will have enough income to meet obligations to the mortgage for the next two years and
that proceeds from all fundraisers can go toward future payments.
Spoke about the need for Parish Council Committees to complete their budgets before Father Ron goes in for sur-
gery on June 29.
5. Parish Council Commission Reports & Committee Updates
Worship & Spirituality (Sharon Mealey): The Worship & Spirituality Commission met on June 14. Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament for Friday mornings is in the planning stages. Saint Mary’s plans to host a Blue Mass honoring First
Responders on Sunday, September 23. The Commission is arranging for two more Eucharistic ministers to serve at Sat-
urday Masses to help distribute communion. The Commission is also arranging to give thank-you gifts to altar servers
later this year. This group will meet again on August 9.
Faith Formation (Crystal DeNeve): The Faith Formation Committee has been moving materials from the REC into the
new building and preparing for the Parish Rummage Sale on June 24-25. Unsold items will be donated to a disabled vet-
erans’ organization. Faith Formation is also preparing for the Totus Tuus Retreat happening at Saint Mary’s in July.
They need a place for the retreat team to stay and people to help during the retreat. Contact Crystal at 641-236-7486 or
[email protected] if you can help with any of these efforts.
1. Did you know that Catholics are supposed to
observe an hour fast before Mass? So if you
attend the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, you
shouldn't have anything to eat after 10:00 AM.
2. Did you know that Mass isn't ended until the
deacon or priest says, "The Mass is ended go in
peace?" Leaving right after communion is not
appropriate. Leaving right after communion every
week is really not appropriate.
3. Did you know that if you arrive to Mass after the
Gospel has been proclaimed you should not
receive communion?
4. Reminder, we created a wonderful gathering
space for people to converse prior to and after
Mass. Please observe respectful silence in the
Church proper for people who are preparing
themselves for Mass by praying.
Mass Etiquette P l e a s e b e
aware of an
email scam tar-
geting Catholics
all over the
country. Parish members and staff are receiving
an email request that looks to be from their Pas-
tor. The email has the Pastor ’ s name in it but it
is not their real address. In the email is a request
for a gift card from ITunes or similar to be given
to a person in need. They may ask to have the
numbers on the card sent to them or to an alter-
native address. This has happened all over the
country and in our Diocese. Here is an article
from the DC area that discussed the
scam: ht tps:/ /wtop.com/pr ince-wil l iam-

the facts over the phone with your Fr. Ron to
insure that you are not getting scammed.
Building & Grounds (Steve Bernemann): The Buildings & Grounds Committee met on June 13. Wiring for the lighting
of the Mary statue outside the church is completed. Van Maanen Electric is working on replacing the light switch panel
in the church. Two new ceiling fans have been installed, and the AC unit for the sanctuary is installed and is now opera-
tional. Remodeling work in the church basement and kitchen are nearing completion. Father Ron has arranged for some
landscaping work to begin at the church this summer.
Parish Life (Charles Willenbring): The Parish Life Committee met to discuss preparations for the Saint Mary’s Commu-
nity Open House on July 15. Charles has a list of parishioners who are prepared to bake items and help with events and
will be contacting people in late June to ask for help. If you would like to help prepare for the Open House, please con-
tact Charles at 641-485-0408 or [email protected].
Stewardship (Jennifer Williams): The Stewardship Committee discussed the plan to implement a Time and Talent Sur-
vey this fall (see “New Business” above for more details).
The Social Action Committee (Scot Wilson), Knights of Columbus (John Gorman), and Technology Committee (Bill
Gruman) did not have reports at this meeting.
6. Pastor’s Report: No official pastor’s report, as Father Ron’s updates appear throughout these minutes above. We all
will be praying for Father Ron as he undergoes surgery in late June and recuperates at the rectory in early July.
7. Next Parish Council Meeting: Thursday, July 19 at 6:30 pm; Opening Prayer: Patsy Probasco, Closing Prayer:
Sharon Mealey.
8. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm with prayer by Jennifer Williams.
Submitted by John Grennan, Parish Council Secretary

New Furniture Added to
the Upper Gathering Space
Thanks to Ginny Van Ersvelde for all the time and en-
ergy spent in looking for some of the first furniture that
will go into the Gathering Space. The space turned out
great with a fine panorama of Broad
Street. Saturday evening Sharon Mealy and Mary
Arensdorf were seen relaxing there before Mass. It's
going to be a popular "destination spot," at St. Mary's.
Rummage Sale Records Record Sales
Wow! We hit record sales levels at this year's rum-
mage sale. $3,273.90 to be exact! We had rooms
that were chocked full of great buys and on
Friday afternoon there looked to be a steady
stream of people exiting with bags of treasures.
Thank you to everyone who donated their lightly
used extras for the sale!
Many thanks go to all of those who spent time
organizing, pricing, folding, moving, selling, and
working the floor. A huge thank you goes to Mary
Arensdorf who spent several weeks in the REC
going through cabinets, boxes, and bags, and
organizing for the sale. Thanks, Mary!
Our First Planter in the Front
of the Church is Planted!
Thanks goes to a small but mighty committee who
have organized to take on the task of landscaping
around our parish buildings. They have identified
plants, areas to be planted with what, and have
taken on the task of spreading lots of mulch and
watering plants so they don't wither up in the heat
we've been having.
The front planter on the corner of 5th and Broad
have been planted with...
Little Blue Stem, Butterfly Milkweed, Prairie
Smoke and many more native Iowa plants.
