Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion Personal and community events can change us in ways that can be difficult to explain. Our attitude shifts and we see the world differently, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. A child is born, a president is elected, a relative dies, a national tragedy occurs, the market rises or falls, or an old friend visits and we are changed. Life is different. We adapt, but things are never the same again. When Jesus suffers and dies, life is changed. The Apostles hide in fear. His followers are confused and uncertain. The message of love seems overcome by the power of hate. And no one knows what to expect next. There is little to say or do as the friends and followers of Jesus struggle to make sense of their dashed hopes and shattered lives. For us, the experience of the Passion of Christ is different. We already know the ending. The darkness of confusion and fear will give way to the dawn of Easter light. All the more reason, then, for us to reflect in silent awe of God’s love for us. Jesus willingly suffered for our sake, offering His life for our sins. The only thing we can give in return is a contrite heart, ready and willing to take up our cross and follow Him. The suffering and death of Jesus will bring us life, peace, forgiveness and joy. Life is changed, and we are not the same.

At Easter, we honor and celebrate our priests. Our priests have dedicated their lives to serving the Catholic faithful here in the Archdiocese of Boston; now, it’s our turn to fulfill the promises made to care for them in their time of need. Please give generously to the Easter collection, which will directly benefit the 628 active and senior diocesan priests whose health and well-being are cared for through the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. Thank you in advance for your support of this critical effort.

Thank you to all who have participated in the 2015 Catholic Appeal campaign. Your support is the most effective way our parish community can join together in the Church’s universal work to care for our neighbors. From Fr. Carlos Happy Easter!

Welcome to those of you who are here for the first time, or for the first time in a long time! It’s a blessing that we’re all gathered here today as we enter into this Holy Season. During the season of Lent we prepared our hearts and our lives to enter more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us by reflecting on Jesus’ passion and death. Now, as we begin the fifty days of the Easter season, we rejoice in God’s love for us by reflecting on Jesus’ triumph over death. It is this day which seals for us the truth that we are not a people marked by death but by resurrection. We read about it and we sing about it, as Alleluias again come out of our mouths, but we also need to sit and reflect on this great news and the impact which Christ’s resurrection has on us and on how we live our lives. In weeks past I’ve spoken and written about our instinct to live our Christian lives as a private matter. We compartmentalize our lives, hiding our lives of faith in Church and at home while doing our best to blend in with everyone else the rest of the time. However, today we see why such an approach will never fit with the mission which God has entrusted to us. By our baptism we have been made ambassadors of Christ, and such a mission can only be fulfilled by sharing the good news of Jesus with others. It may seem challenging to share our faith with others. We may feel like we won’t be good witnesses to others because we don’t know enough, or because the sins of our past will lessen our credibility. We have all these fears which can keep us from being good disciples, and that’s why the Church gives us two models in the gospel today that remind us that being a disciple is not about being perfect or perfectly prepared but about being willing to share the good news of Jesus’ saving love with others. Saint Peter we venerate as the rock upon which Jesus established His Church. We celebrate his role as a leader among the apostles and we hold him up as the first pope. That all these great things can be attributed to him does not deny his beginnings. Peter was eager in following Jesus, but he also struggled to understand the full impact of Jesus’ mission. During Jesus’ passion not only did Peter run away. He also denied even knowing Jesus. However, Jesus did not leave Peter in his sinfulness. Jesus gave Peter an opportunity to reaffirm his fidelity, and from that point Peter emerged as a faithful disciple who was willing to give everything for the gospel Saint Mary Magdalene is a person whose identity is shrouded in misconception and myth. At various times she has been confused with the woman caught in adultery, and with other figures in the gospels. Other myths have cropped up around her and have even made it into the present. In order to understand who she is and why she is a great example of faith to us, we need to go back to the witness of what the scriptures tell us. All the gospels tell us is that she was a woman whom Jesus had freed of seven spirits (Luke 8:2). She was also one of the women who remained by Jesus during his death on the cross. As we see in today’s gospel, Mary Magdalene was the first to testify to Jesus’ resurrection. That she was a sinner is likely true, just like we are all sinners, but the image which the gospels hold us for us of Mary Magdalene is that of a faithful disciple who remained steadfast in following Jesus and proclaiming Him to others. Saint Augustine in the fourth century gave St. Mary Magdalene the title of “Apostle to the Apostles.” These two disciples had very different journeys, but they ended in the same place; sharing the gospel in this life and rejoicing in the glory of eternal life. Through our baptism each of us has become a disciple of the Lord. Therefore, like the early disciples, we have to transition from sin to faith to glory. As we journey through Easter may we ask the intercession of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Peter so that our lives may be transformed by the glory of Christ’s resurrection and so that we’ll have the necessary words and actions to share that good news with others. Happy Easter!
