Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 17, 2019

First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-8

In the last years before the crushing defeat of Jerusalem and the exile of many of its citizens to Babylon, Jeremiah watched the people destroying themselves through material-ism and unfaithfulness to God. Here he sets before them a clear choice. Second Reading:

1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20 In last week’s reading from first Corinthians, we heard the oldest written record of the Church’s core tradition about Christ’s resurrection. Today’s passage follows directly from that, as Paul addresses concern about our own resurrection.

This week we celebrated the life of our beloved former pastor and buried his remains. During these days since his death we have heard from so many their favorite “Brian stories.” With Fr. Brian’s passing, we are more conscious than ever of his legacy. What he gave us through his life and ministry lives on within us as individuals and as a parish community. We rejoice now with Fr. Brian as he enjoys his heavenly reward and experiences first hand what he promised to all whose funerals he celebrated -- “There is more.” As with any gift in our lives, we first give thanks and express our gratitude for the blessing Fr. Brian was to us and to our parish. But more than that, we ask ourselves what we can do in return for all he did for us. The best way to honor a legacy is to continue a legacy. Fr. Paulson is committed to doing just that, especially when it comes to Fr. Brian’s dedication to social justice. Under his leadership, CTK became known as a parish committed to social justice. Fr. Brian knew social justice was one of the most important ways we can “Hear the Gospel and Make a Difference.” In the words of Pope Francis, “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society.” Essential to this ministry is a vital parish social justice committee, or as we call it at CTK, the Faith in Action Committee. Fr. Paulson has asked me to be the new chair of Faith in Action with a charge to revi-talize the committee and encourage the participation and involve-ment of new members. Faith in Action is a ministry of both direct service to the poor and marginalized but also advocacy for public policies consistent with the social teaching of the Church. Faith in Action is one of the parish committees that most epitomizes the spirit of caring service and the commitment to making a differ-ence in our world. The committee has had energetic and inspired leadership over many years. To sustain the good works of this com-mittee and the many related ministries which demonstrate faith in action, we want to reach out to you and encourage your participa-tion. You might choose to be part of the leadership and coordination func-tion of the Faith In Action Committee or you might choose to be-come involved with one of the many ministries of the parish or the local community which provide direct, loving service to the poor -- the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Helping Hands, Monument Crisis Center, or St. Mary’s Center, just to name a few. Again, in the words of Pope Francis, “An authentic faith -- which is never comfortable or completely personal -- always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.” We encourage you to participate in continuing the legacy of Fr. Bri-an, but more importantly, make this involvement in social ministry part of your own legacy. Peace, Kathy Gannon-Briggs
