The Presentation of the Lord
The Presentation of the Lord
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. The Presentation, which is celebrated 40 days after Christmas, is not mentioned in the other Gospels. Only Luke tells the story, most likely because he writes for Gentile Christians who are not familiar with the Jewish rite of presentation and purification. In addition, the intent of Luke’s Gospel is to show that God’s promise to Israel, fulfilled in Jesus, extends to Gentiles. Luke recognizes Joseph and Mary as faithful Jews who bring Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Here they present their firstborn son to the Lord. Jesus is thus consecrated as required by the Law of Moses. Present in the temple at this time are Simeon and Anna. Both are awaiting the restoration of God’s rule in Israel. Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see Christ the Lord, the Messiah, before he died. The holy man immediately recognized the infant Jesus as the promised Savior, a “light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Anna also recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of the promise of redemption and spoke about him to all.

REQUEST FOR NEW SERVERS We are in need of new servers for the weekend Masses at Christ, Prince of Peace and St. Lawrence. If your child is interested in serving at Mass please call the Partner Parish Office at (724-763-9141) and leave the name of the child, parents names, phone number and which Masses they would like to serve for. Serving Mass is a very important and special ministry in the Church. Your children will become more connected to the liturgy and the Church when they participate in this ministry. In order to serve, your child needs to have received First Communion. Thank you in advance for your consideration and we hope we have many responses.

St. Blaise Feast Day February 3
Blaise lived so long ago that we know nothing about his early life. We do know that he was a both a doctor and a bishop in the area that is today either Armenia or Turkey. In the beginning of the fourth century, Christians were being persecuted by the Romans. The Roman Emperor believed that arresting and punishing important leaders like Blaise would prevent other people from becoming followers of Christ. Blaise’s prison was a dark cave. One of the legends that is told about him is that wild animals came to the cave so that he could treat their wounds. It is said that a mother brought her young son to Blaise. The boy was choking on a fish bone. Blaise saved the boy’s life by saying a prayer and blessing him with candles crossed upon his throat. Tradition tells us that the grateful mother visited Blaise’s in prison to bring him food and candles. During his time in prison, Blaise was sentenced to death. He was martyred in the year 316. St. Blaise is the patron saint of people with diseases of the throat. On St. Blaise’s feast day, many parishes bless the throats of their parishioners in a special ceremony. Two unlit candles are held next to each person’s throat as the priest or deacon says, “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” St. Blaise reminds us of the importance of taking care of our health and also to thank God for doctors and medicines that can help us to recover from illnesses. We honor St. Blaise for his faith and care for his people.
O glorious Saint Blaise, who by thy martyrdom didst leave to the Church a precious witness to the faith, obtain for us the grace to preserve within ourselves this divine gift, and to defend, without human respect, both by word and example, the truth of that same faith, which is so wickedly attacked and slandered in these our times. Thou who didst miraculously restore a little child when it was at the point of death by
reason of an affliction of the throat, grant us thy mighty protection in like misfortunes; and, above all, obtain for us the grace of Christian mortification together with a faithful observance of the precepts of the Church, which may keep us from offending Almighty God. Amen.
