MEDITATION ON OUR CHRISTIAN CALLING 1 P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

C: for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with

Christ. Galatians 3:26,27

P: There is one body and one Spirit -

C: just as you were called to one hope when you were called-

P: one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

C: one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6

P: You are the salt of the earth;

C: you are the light of the world.

P: Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds

C: and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16

P: As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,

C: especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10

P: Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord

Jesus,

C: giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

1 God has charged his people to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). We bear witness to his love and forgiveness in all that we do in service toward our neighbors. Whether this service takes the form of a parent, child, tradesman, or retiree, God has given us the privilege of using our gifts to his glory.

CONFESSION P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,

For sins of habit and sins of choice,

For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,

You should cast me away from your presence forever.

O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

ABSOLUTION

P: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

369 BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR

Text: Münsterisch Gesangbuch, Münster, 1677, abr.; tr. Joseph A. Seiss, 1823–1904.

PRAYER OF THE DAY 2

P: O God, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world from the

despair of death. By his resurrection to life, grant your faithful people

gladness of heart and the hope of eternal joys; through your Son, Jesus

Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever.

C: Amen.

2 The Prayer of the Day is a short prayer that “collects” in one short petition all it is that we are asking God to do for us on the basis of the Word that we are about to hear—read and preached (Philippians 4:6).

THE WORD OF GOD

FIRST LESSON: ACTS 2:14a, 36-47 3

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

3 This lesson continues Peter’s Pentecost sermon from last Sunday with the culmination of his message to the people of Israel. They had lost the ancient hope long promised, and instead they placed their hope in the punctilious performance of human ordinances. Peter’s sermon dashes their false hope to pieces. Could there be a better preachment of specific Law than Peter’s words here? Could there be a better preachment of specific Gospel as Peter restores their hope through the sweet message of Christ crucified and risen for sinners? Paul preaches Law that kills and Gospel that raises to life. C.F.W. Walther’s Sixth Thesis on Law and Gospel says, “God’s Word is not properly divided when the Law is not preached in its full severity nor the Gospel in its full sweetness…” Rightly dividing Law and Gospel leads to hope restored in the Savior.

745 May the Peace of God 4

4 This hymn is based on Psalm 67, a communal prayer for God’s blessing. Typically, this Psalm is used at the conclusion of worship. Today we sing it here as our Psalm of the Day.

SECOND LESSON: 1 PETER 1:17-21

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your

lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21

Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

VERSE OF THE DAY 5 Luke 24:32

P: Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Our hearts were

burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us. Alleluia.

5 The Verse of the Day, traditionally called the Alleluia (a Latinized form of the Hebrew word meaning “praise the Lord”) is a verse of particular relevance to the theme of the day.

GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 24:13-35 6

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked

him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

6 For these two disciples on the road, it was a day of great puzzlement, sadness, and disillusionment. They left the Holy City having heard the report of the women and Peter and John. But their understanding of God’s plan of salvation was deficient: they weren’t expecting a resurrection! John puts his finger on the disciples’ problem. “They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.” (John 20:9). Their sight, logic, emotions, and expectations had led them to abandon what Scripture said. But our gracious Lord comes and identifies the problem: they are not believing all that the prophets have spoken. They chose only to believe those parts of Scripture that met their preconceived notions of what the Messiah should be. Our Lord addresses the problem by explaining all the Scriptures that showed the Christ had to die and rise. How well did they learn the lesson? They marveled at how he opened the Scriptures to them and restored that ancient hope!

Page 10: Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church · 4/26/2020  · 2 382 MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS Text: Edward Mote, 1797–1874, alt./Tune: John Stainer, 1840-1901

10

19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word

and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

THANKSGIVING

OFFERING 8

7 Having heard the Word of God, we confess our faith in his name. The creed is our saying back to God what he has first said to us. In the Creed we acclaim the truth of the triune God and his work of salvation accomplished for us in his incarnate Son, Jesus Christ (Matthew 10:32,33; Philippians 2:11). 8 The members of Christ Our Savior have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. We offer an electronic giving option. If you would like to start giving your weekly offering electronically, please go to the App Store or Google Play and search for “GivePlus Church” to download the App for free. You can also go directly to our church website and click on the “Online Giving” tab. This offering is a joyful response of our faith; so, if you are visiting with us this morning, we do not want you to feel obligated.

485 WE GIVE THEE BUT THINE OWN

Text: William W. How, 1823–97.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH 9

LORD’S PRAYER 10

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

9 Through the Prayer of the Church we heed Christ’s command to “love one another.” One of the greatest forms of love we can show for our neighbor is to pray for them. 10 The Pater Noster, Latin for “Our Father,” is the prayer by which Jesus teaches us to pray. It is more than a personal prayer. It is the prayer of all Christians for their fellow man (Notice the 1st person plurals “us” and “our”).

LORD’S BLESSING 11

P: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen.

765 DAY BY DAY

11 The name of the Lord is the beginning and end of our worship. We are now marked with the Lord’s name in the Benediction—that word of God’s blessing from Numbers 6 in which He favors us with His grace and peace. With the Lord’s name given us in Holy Baptism, we were drawn together. Now, with that same name, He sends us back into the world, to the places of our various callings, to live by the mercy we have received as living sacrifices to the praise of His glory and the good of our neighbor (Numbers 6:22-27; Romans 12:1-2).
