We will seek God’s will, share God’s love, and serve as Christ’s people.

Christ Lutheran News March, 2018

New Life in Jesus!

I am a caterpillar, I hardly make a sound.

I look for lots of leaves to eat Up high and on the ground.

And as I eat, my body grows.

I’m ready for a change. I wrap up in a chrysalis: It looks so very strange.

Though it may seem to those who watch

That inside I could die, Our God is making something new—

See, now, a butterfly!

Our Savior works in this same way. He died for you one day.

He rose again on Easter morn To take your sins away.

Through faith, believe in his great gift,

He’ll make your heart brand new! And just like me you’ll be transformed;

He gives new life to you!

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” ~2 Corinthians 5:17

Prayer Requests

Call the church office at 507-836-8291, or e-mail with your prayer requests. If you would like a pastoral visit or be included in pastoral prayers during worship, please call the church office.

Address, Phone & Email Corrections

Christ Lutheran maintains a database of all members. If you have had any changes to your address, phone num-ber, marital status, etc. please contact Dawn with your name and the changes that need to be made.

If You Are Ill

Hospitals no longer notify churches when their members are admitted for care. While we feel these laws are im-portant to maintain your privacy, we would like to sup-port you with prayer and a visit. Please call the church office 836-8291 to keep us informed of your situation.

At the Feb. 25 leadership retreat, the pastors shared the difference in their perspectives… Both Pastor Dawn and Pastor Len are here to serve Christ Lutheran and Faith Lutheran, but our starting points are certainly not the same. Pastor Dawn came here a few years ago to begin what we term a “settled call,” which means there is no end-date in sight and the plan is to stay indefinitely. For her, Pastor Ted’s resignation was something of a game-changer over which she had no control. And if that wasn’t enough “change,” suddenly she was introduced to a new colleague whom she had never met before. Now she is in a wait-and-see mode that she didn’t ask for. Don’t get me wrong, Pastor Dawn has been a great colleague; I’m just pointing out “her world” to you.

Pastor Len, on the other hand, came here specifically be-cause of Pastor Ted’s resignation and the resulting va-cancy. I have conducted a funeral, am anticipating an up-coming wedding, and shared in preaching, teaching and reaching (old lingo) etc. But my goal is not the status quo; my job is to upset the apple cart and question everything.

The easiest aspect of this to understand involves the rela-tionship between the two congregations. No one knows for sure yet what Faith Lutheran will do, but it is almost certain that the relationship between the two congrega-tions will not remain the same. Right now Faith Lutheran provides budget for ½ of one pastoral compensation. What happens if Faith cannot continue to do this in the fu-ture? What action will Christ Lutheran take if funding for 25% of program staff is removed?

My unique focus will involve these questions, and we will enter this process together in the Spring and Summer months.

God bless, Pastor Len

On this page you will find a brief overview of the month’s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran’s financial status. Following our annual

meeting, the congregation voted on the 2018 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $24,133.67 each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. 3% of your offerings each month will be sent to the Synod office to meet our Synod Mission Support goal.

~Ronda Radke, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager

Here’s a look at where we ended January:

Beginning Balance: $ (158.83) Receipts: $ 19,399.91 Expenses: $ 25,052.16 Ending Balance: $ (5,811.08)

The gray bar shows our actual offerings through the end of February. The black bar is our budgeted offering total.

Holy Week Services

Please join us for these special worship services during Holy Week as we remember what Jesus has done for our salvation:

Palm Sunday—March 25; Worship at our normal time of 10:15 as we remember Jesus’ triumphant entry into the city of Jerusalem

Maundy Thursday—March 29; worship at 7:00 pm. We remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples when he washed their feet (John 13:1-15) and instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion (Matthew 26:17-30). We will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion along with 5

th graders who will be receiving it for the first time.

The service ends with the stripping of the altar, as Jesus was humiliated that night. (Worship at Faith Lutheran at 6;00 pm.)

Good Friday—March 30, worship at 7:00 pm. Join us for this meditative service which includes the Stations of the Cross portrayed by our members, as we reflect on Je-sus’ death for our sin. (Or you can join our friends at Faith who will be at Maple Lawn in Fulda at 10:00 am for a service reflecting on Jesus’ 7 “words” from the cross).

Easter Vigil—Saturday, March 31 at 5:15 pm; We gather in the Social Hall, thinking of the disciples hiding in the Up-per Room following Jesus’ crucifixion. We hear stories of God’s great triumphs and reaffirm our faith as we an-ticipate the good news of Easter.

Easter Sunday—April 1 services at 7:00 AM and at 10:15. In this festive service we celebrate the Good News of Jesus’ victory over the power of sin and death. (Or you can worship at Faith Lutheran at 8:45 am.)

“EXTENDING THE TABLE”

When we celebrate the “Sacrament of the Altar” (Holy Communion) the altar is literally the table of the Lord’s Supper. The meal is hosted by Jesus Christ, presided over by a pastor, and distributed by a number of individu-als, most of whom are members of Christ Lutheran. These members who help distribute are called “assisting ministers.” There is a need/opportunity to establish a team of home assisting ministers who will bring the ele-ments to people in other settings, and thus extend the table beyond the walls of Christ Lutheran.

There will be a training held on Sunday, March 11 following worship with a goal of initiating this ministry right after Easter. Please speak with either pastor or contact the office with any questions. Home communion kits will be provided, the litany used will be provided, and all questions addressed. One frequently raised question involves the presiding over the sacrament: home assisting ministers are distributing from the altar of Christ Lutheran --- not presiding over a separate service.

Join us at Christ Lutheran for a delicious Easter breakfast on Easter Sunday, April 1

st following the 7:00 am Sunrise

Worship until 9:00 am, sponsored and served by the youth attending the National Youth Gathering this summer. The menu includes egg bake, fruit and rolls. Free will donations will be received. Bring your entire family!

Women and Justice: One in Christ

Women and Justice: One in Christ draft social statement of the ELCA is now available in print and online for discussion and response throughout the ELCA. This draft is based on the study the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ released in August of 2016 and the many re-sponses from those who read and studied it. The response period lasts until September 30, 2018.

Copies of this draft statement and accompanying resources are available for download from ELCA.org/womenandjustice. Printed copies may be ordered from the ELCA Online Resource Center either at ELCA.org/resources or by calling 800-638-3522. Several printed cop-ies of this draft social statement are also available at Christ Lutheran Church or you contact the church office to receive your own printed copy of this draft statement.

There is a response form at the back of the printed booklet or you may respond online after reading this draft by using the online form at bit.ly/womenandjusticedraft. In addition, several hearings will be held in our area including one at the Southwestern Minnesota ELCA Synod Assembly June 8-9, 2018 in Redwood Falls, MN. Your participation in this work is crucial for informing the work of the church.

Radio Broadcast Ministry Thank you to all who help support Christ Lutheran’s Ra-dio Broadcast Ministry. There is a clipboard on the shelf in the narthex if you’d like to sponsor a broadcast. Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with “Radio Broadcast” in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website. The next available dates are April 8, 15 and 29.

New Member Sunday in April

Christ Lutheran Church New Member Sunday has been scheduled for Sunday, April 29, 2018 during 10:15 am Wor-ship. If you or someone you know is interested in joining our congregation, please contact the church office with your contact information. More details will be coming regarding membership classes and orientation.

Offering for the Food Shelf

The Mission Outreach Committee will be collecting a spe-cial offering for the Murray County Food Shelf at our Satur-day and Sunday services during Lent. We are asking for monetary donations rather than food donations, as the Food Shelf can purchase items through the Second Harvest Food Bank at a highly discounted rate and make your dol-lars stretch further! We are also asking for donations of personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, tooth-paste, etc. These are items that are not available for pur-chase through Second Harvest. Thank you for your help in supporting the Murray County Food Shelf!

Children’s Choir will not meet Wednesday, March 28.

Confirmation Resumes

After taking a break from class for Lent, our Confirmation classes will resume on Wednesday, April 4 at 6:40 pm.

Planning Ahead~ Advance health care planning. Not such an exciting topic I suppose, and maybe you haven’t thought about it recently. However the best time to do this planning is when you are healthy and not worried about a health problem, so maybe now is the time. Advance health care planning is the process of thinking about what kind of health care you want if you are unable to let your wishes be known. Here is a basic way to start planning. Do some serious thinking about if you became sick

or injured and could not answer for yourself. What treatments would you want or not want? Think about your wishes and goals.

Talk to your doctor if you have any health conditions and ask questions.

Talk to family and friends about your thoughts and wishes.

Choose a person you would like to make decisions for you if needed.

Complete legal papers that state your wishes. Some options:

Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Advanced Directives Health Care Directive Living Wills Final Wishes Forms for each are online, look for one for Minnesota--

states have different laws. The goal of most is to name the person who would speak for you and share your health care wishes if you could not.

When completed and notarized or witnessed, share copies with the person who will speak for you, your family and your doctors. And keep one for yourself in a safe and easy to find place.

Be sure your loved ones know your wishes and where your legal document is—just in case. And this goes for

We will have another Sunday Morning Conversation on March 18 at the 9 AM hour in the Chapel Lounge with Todd Hieroni-mus from Totzke’s Funeral Home. He will be leading the con-versation about funeral planning. Not a fun topic, but it is good to have knowledge and a plan. Please join us for an hour to learn and to ask your questions. Thank you to Arlyn Stokesbary for leading a conversation and sharing his knowledge about long term care insurance and other financial questions in February. His expertise is much appreciated.
