“Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!” This variation of Luke 24:34 is widely accepted as the most ancient of Christian greetings, and it is found in the oldest of Easter liturgies. We generally say that the Church was born on Pentecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit and our first understanding of the Holy Trinity, but certainly there was nothing that could labeled as “Christian” prior to the res-urrection of the Christ.

As individual Christians we often speak of our personal calling in language like that used to call the disciples. We use language like that of the Word taking on human form. We use the language of the season of Epiphany to speak of Jesus of Nazareth walking the earth. We use the language of the cross and Good Friday to speak of the way that God makes himself know in our suffering and shares those dire moments with us. But I think it is safe to say that without the resurrection --- without Easter --- there would be no Christian church today.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15: “19

If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pit-

ied. 20

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.” But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead! That is a bold claim, but it is the critical Easter claim. In fact! Christ has been raised from the dead!

Easter has taken on a lot of secular characteristics as our culture has broadened. Easter eggs and bunnies, pan-cakes and candies, spring break, the Final Four and Base-ball season opener, lambing and calving, planting and more. All these things are fun and fine, but it incumbent on us as Christians to remember the great miracle: Christ is risen!

Christ is risen indeed. Pastor Len

An Easter Message from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

It all started with such promise – the angel announcing to Mary that the child she would bear would be called Son of the Most High; the conviction of Mary that this child would be the embodiment of God’s promised justice, that the hungry would be filled with good things and the rich sent away empty; angels announcing his birth; thousands being fed; the sick healed; the dead raised.

And then, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” It was over. The world hadn’t changed. Might still made right. How ridicu-lously naïve to believe that any reversal of the old order could come about. Hope is for the gullible. Looking at this broken man hanging utterly helpless, naked and broken on a cross, the powers and prin-cipalities, earthly and spiritual, death and the devil must have said, “You fool.”

This, as St. Paul reminds us, is the wisdom of the world. And the world can present plenty of hard evidence that it is right: children kill-ing children in horrific school shootings, 60 million displaced people – all of this supported by our rebellion against God, our idolatrous claim that we are in control and the world is ours. In the face of this and all of the suffering others cause and we cause others, we, too, might cry out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

I believe that the beginning of Psalm 22 expresses the anguish of the psalmist and the anguish of our Lord, but there is more going on here. Citing the first words of a text was, in the tradition of the time, a way of identifying an entire passage. The psalm ends this way: “All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. … Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord, and pro-claim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.” This is the wisdom of God. Jesus’ crucifixion is the death of our death. His innocent suffering has reconciled all of creation to God. He has done it. We stake our lives on this.

This year, Easter falls on April 1. We shall have come through the Lenten desert to the Easter garden. We shall say, “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!” And we shall confess this and live this in the face of worldly wisdom that is based on death. Life wins. Love wins. And if the world wants to call us April fools, we are glad to claim that title.

“The time has come…”

The Christ Lutheran Church Transition Team will be ap-pointed during the first few weeks after Easter. For the next year or so, there are three main (and separate) key groups in the call process for Christ Lutheran.

The first continues to be the Council; they will con-tinue to provide leadership as always. The Council works in partnership with both pastors and all the congregational committees.

The second is the Transition Team; they will help discern the congregation’s priorities and complete the all-important Congregational Profile. The TT works closely with Pastor Len and seeks input from every group in the congregation including commit-tees and other groups (like Sunday School teach-ers etc.)

The third is the Call Committee. The Call Commit-tee works with a representative of the Synod and reports to the council. The Call Committee seeks to match the Congregational Profile as composed by the TT, the Mobility papers (resume) completed by individual pastoral candidates, Pastor Len is not involved in the Call process.

It’s usually a bad idea to think in terms of the calendar, but it would be realistic to ask the TT to work through the sum-mer and fall, and pass the baton to the CC at some point in the fall/winter.

“So, speaking of intentional interims…” By Pastor Len

Confirmation Resumes

On this page you will find a brief overview of the month’s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran’s financial status. Following our annual

meeting, the congregation voted on the 2018 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $24,133.67 each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. 3% of your offerings each month will be sent to the Synod office to meet our Synod Mission Support goal.

~Ronda Radke, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager

Here’s a look at where we ended February:

Beginning Balance: $ (5,811.08) Receipts: $ 23,696.55 Expenses: $ 38,481.87 Borrow from Savings: $ 14,000.00 Ending Balance: $ (6,596.40)

The gray bar shows our actual offerings through March 26. The black bar is our budgeted offering total.

“EXTENDING THE TABLE”

When we celebrate the “Sacrament of the Altar” (Holy Communion) the altar is literally the table of the Lord’s Supper. The meal is hosted by Jesus Christ, presided over by a pastor, and distributed by a number of individu-als, most of whom are members of Christ Lutheran. These members who help distribute are called “assisting ministers.” There is a need/opportunity to establish a team of home assisting ministers who will bring the ele-ments to people in other settings, and thus extend the table beyond the walls of Christ Lutheran.

There will be a training held in the sanctuary on Sun-day, April 8 following worship. Please speak with ei-ther pastor or contact the office with any questions. Home communion kits will be provided, the litany used will be provided, and all questions addressed. One frequently raised question involves the presiding over the sacrament: home assisting ministers are distributing from the altar of Christ Lutheran --- not presiding over a separate service.

Financial Update

Your church leadership needs you to be aware of our finan-cial situation. The weekly offering has not been enough to cover our bills each month and we have no reserves. If you are behind in your planned giving or feel compelled to re-spond generously to your church, please leave your gift in the regular offering plate, the collection in the narthex or give a gift electronically. Next week your church council will be meeting to address our financial needs for the rest of the year.

A Word Of Thanks:

As you know, I had surgery a few weeks ago. It was bad timing, but we don’t always get to choose this stuff. It’s been a nuisance for me, and very humbling to exercise within the limits of human frailty. But it has also been a sig-nificant burden for my wife and any number of people that depend on me. I want to publically thank both of “the Dawns.” Dawn Mouw has brought the wheelchair out to my car countless times. Pastor Dawn has rearranged the preaching and visitation schedule with me almost every week. Both have been wonderful! Jeanne Cochran loaned me a wheelchair (CLC could use a standard size chair), Dale has hauled things around for me, the Altar Guild has been flexible, several folks have brought the wheelchair back from the street at night… In short, “Thanks to all!” ~From Pastor Len
