1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 History

Christ College was born out of the educational vision of Blessed KuriakoseElias Chavara, the founder of the first indigenous catholic religiouscongregation, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) to provide qualityeducation. Blessed Chavara was a visionary and social reformer of the 19th

Century.

Christ College is rooted in Gospel values, and committed to provide Holisticeducation through the development of intellectual competence, personalskills, inter-personal skills and societal skills. The college welcomes to itsfold students from all over the country in an environment of religious harmonyand secularism.

1.2 The Institution

Christ College – Pune came into existence in the academic year 2007-08.The College is affiliated to the University of Pune. The college offers B.A.,B.Com and B.Sc. (Computer Science), B.B.A, B.C.A. and B.B.M DegreeCourses.

It has become the first choice of the best and the brightest. The highlydisciplined and clean campus provides the right atmosphere for systematiclearning. Giving maximum importance to quality education, Christ Collegeaims at the overall development of the students so as to equip them toeffectively face the challenges of the modern world.

Christ College promotes a worldview in which the entire humanity is onefamily. It is very secular in its outlook. Students of various castes, creedsand languages make it their “home away from home” and enjoy the campuslife here, in harmony.

1.5 Campus

Infrastructure: State of art infrastructure, sheltered under a canopy of treesis the hallmark of the college. Labs, Library and vast sports grounds add tothe ambience of higher learning.

Library: Christ College’s Library offers students access to all importantbooks. The Library subscribes to all the important newspapers andmagazines and has an excellent collection of various books and journals

which provides the right ambience for self-study and research. The workinghours of Library are from 8.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Laboratories : The College has well equipped modern laboratories forComputer Science and electronics, statistics and commerce which facilitatesenhancement of knowledge through practicals.

Prayer Hall: The college provides a serene and calm atmosphere to thosewho wish to spend time in silence, reflection and prayer.

Cafeteria and Food Court: The spacious Cafeteria offers the students qualityfood at reasonable price. The cafeteria Kiosk and Snack Bar provides easyaccess for students seeking to refresh themselves with snacks during shortbreaks.

Health Club: The college has a Multi Gym and Fitness Centre for studentsand Faculty.

Sports and Games: The sports and games facilities on campus enablestudents attain physical growth and sportsman spirit. Intra-institution andinter-institution matches and Sports Day give the students ample opportunityto exhibit their talents and skills. Special coaching camps are held forfootball, basket ball, volley ball and badminton by highly qualified physicalinstructors.

College Letter Head is to be used only for official letters/certificates by persons authorized for the purpose.

2.2.1 Job description of Faculty Member

a. Preparation of course plan with detailed break up of syllabustopic for the subject handled, as per the guideline and decideon the prescribed textbook for study.

b. Effectively utilize the teaching hours for the benefit of thestudents duly adapting to the teaching methodology as maybe specified for the particular course, including holisticeducation classes.

c. Ensure that any teaching hour lost due to leave or other exigencyis compensated by filling in the leave hours of any of otherfaculties of the same class.

d. Prepare and conduct the monthly comprehension tests as perthe guideline.

e. Prepare a question bank for the topics covered.

f. Prepare question paper for the subject handled for the termexamination.

g. Prescribe and evaluate internal assessment exercises.

h. Evaluation of the answer sheets of the term exam and preparea post examination ‘Examiner’s Report’ in the prescribed format.

i. Update oneself of the current developments in the subjecthandled by regular reference to Publications and internet.

m. The HOD/Coordinator may specify any other responsibility.

2.2.2 Additional Job Description for Class Teacher:

1. To be responsible for all matters concerning class under the chargemore specifically:

Attendance, attitude, dress code, conduct, behaviour, academicperformance, extra and co-curricular activities of the students.

Identification of non / under–performing students and ensuringtheir improvement by suitable measures.

Assist in choosing the Class Representatives one for boysand one for girls and delegating role responsibilities.

Interact with students discreetly and with the classrepresentatives to know difficulties experienced by the studentsfor its rectification.

2. To Interact with other faculties of the class for the feedback on studentsperformance and ensure appropriate corrective action.

3. Consolidate period wise attendance data for the class on daily basisfor necessary follow up on habitual latecomers and absentees.

4. Consolidate and review marks details of the students of the class forinternal assessment to initiate steps on underperforming students.

5. Handle the current affairs session for the students.

2.2.3 Job Description for HOD/Coordinator

a. Responsible for efficient functioning of the Department/Centrewith reference to its goals and objectives and conduct thedepartment in a professional manner.

b. Develop and schedule activities of the department for theacademic year – preparation of departmental calendar.

c. Ensure judicious class/job allocation to the faculty members

d. Ensure that all faculty members complete their roleresponsibilities in a timely manner.

e. Ensure leave management of teaching and non-teaching staffof the department, in such a way that no prescribed class hoursare lost.

f. Ensure harmonious working environment to nurture a healthyacademic community and assist in resolving differences.

g. Periodic independent review of faculty performance individuallyand suggest remedial tips.

h. Initiate opportunities and avenues for developing facultyknowledge and capability.

i. Encourage regular academic discussions for subject exposureamong the relevant faculties in and outside the department tofacilitate knowledge sharing and updating.

j. Identify and arrange specialist lectures for different subjects inconsultation with the concerned faculty.

k. Maintain overall student discipline in the department as perCollege policy and guideline, with due co-ordination with theClass Teachers, with regard to attendance, uniform, attitude,conduct, assignment completion etc.

l. Resolve difficulties faced by the students, academic and non-academic in due consultation with the class teacher and referringessential cases to the Counselor, with a discrete note ofreference.

m. Convene regular faculty meetings to assess and review theprogress of planned activities.

n. Conduct pre-examination and post examination reviews withthe faculties concerned with regard to quality of questions,answers, rectification measures etc. to improve the studentperformance/results.

o. Comply with the reporting requirements and submissions asmay be specified.

p. Finalization of the timetable and the date for submission ofassignments and journals.

q. Develop proposals for improved teaching methods, curriculumenhancement, new academic programs of practical significance etc.

r. Prepare and monitor the time and cost budgets for thedepartment.

s. Explore the avenues for converting the department in to a valuecentre.

t. Prepare annual personal evaluation report.

u. Convene department Meetings at least once in a week.

v. The Principal/Director may specify any other responsibilities.

2.2.4 General guidance on teaching practices and procedures

1. Course Plan for the succeeding year must be prepared as soon asthe current year classes are over, so that no classes are taken in thesucceeding year without a course plan. Course Plan must bedeveloped (in the prescribed format) collectively by all the teachers ofthe same subject paper, endorsed by the Coordinator and the HODand approved by the Principal. Due consideration must be given tothe course objective and the paper objective, while preparing the courseplan.

2. Teacher must strictly follow the order in the course plan. The courseplan should be used as teaching schedule for the teacher. At the endof every class, the topic to be dealt in the next class, to be announcedand students must be asked to read the topic before they come forthe next class. The teacher must ask simple question on the topicbefore commencing the explanation.

3. At the end of every class, the last few minutes must summarize whatwas taught in that class.

4. Explanation must be in simple language with adequate illustrations.

5. As far as possible use OHP or LCD presentations for all classes.

6. Students must be made to interact on the subject by relevant mootquestions.

7. Dictation of standardized notes for theory subjects must be strictlydiscouraged. Instead, highlight important points and encourage thestudents to develop their own notes. Generally, no theory class isexpected to spend more than 15 minutes in giving notes.

8. After each topic familiarize the students about the type of questionsthat may be asked therefrom. Previous year University exam questionsalso must be referred. These are available in the Library.

9. Suggest how to answer questions which uses terms like define,explain, discuss, meaning, critically analyse, elucidate, clarify etc.

10. Academic timetable must also provide for current affairs, library andInternet search, which the students must be required to usebeneficially.

11. Assignments for internal assessment must be such that reference tolibrary materials and internet would be necessary for its completion.Mere copying form reference material must be wholly discouragedwhile evaluating assessments.

12. Any specialist lecture must be during the class hour of the particularsubject and the concerned faculty must also attend such lectures.

13. No class must be let free (as far as possible) for reasons of facultynon-availability. If alternate faculty cannot be arranged, students mustbe engaged by giving special class assignment on the relevant subject.For this purpose, every faculty must keep and leave with the HOD/Coordinator a ready to use assignment list.

2.2.5 Examination Duty

Attending to examination duty by faculty/staff members as per work allotmentassigned by the Principal/Exam Cell, is mandatory for both Internal andUniversity examinations. The invigilators should report 15 minutes beforethe scheduled start of the examination. Request for any adjustments in theallotted schedule should be made well in time. As a matter of policy noleave shall be approved during examination days except in the cases of orfor extremely unavoidable exigencies.

2.2.6 Faculty Development Programme

It is mandatory for all Faculty members to attend the Faculty developmentprogramme organized by the college. The faculty members should sincerelyinvolve themselves in the follow up activities of the FDP, upholding the visionand mission of the College. The resource persons for the Faculty Developmentprogramme will be selected from the senior faculty members of each deaneryand they are expected to involve and participate in the preparation andpresentation of the modules, allotted by the concerned.

2.2.7 Co-curricular activities

The Faculty members are expected to give proper guidance to the students inorganizing all the co-curricular activities of the college.

LEAVE AND TRAVEL RULES

3.1. Leave rules for teaching staff :

3.1.1 Casual Leave :

a. Total casual leave granted to a teacher shall not exceed fifteendays in an academic year.

b. Casual leave cannot be combined with any other kind of leaveexcept duty leave and intervening holidays, if any

c. Casual leave as far as possible must be pre-informed

d. Not more than 3 days of casual leave shall be normally permittedin a month.

e. A maximum of two restricted holidays (announced by thegovernment) in addition to the casual leave may be availed in ayear, with prior approval by the Principal.

f. No leave shall normally be entertained during examination /evaluation period.

g. The faculty should report to Director / Principal before joiningthe duty.

3.1.2 Duty Leave :

Duty leave is granted at the instance of the College.

a. To conduct examination of the College / Public ServiceCommission / Board of Examination or other similar bodies /institutions; and

b. To inspect academic institutions attached to a statutory board,etc. including BOS and Academic Council, with the approval ofthe College.

c. Attending conferences, symposia and seminars on behalf ofthe College

d. Delivering lectures in institutions and universities at the invitation

e. Participating in a delegation or working on a committeeappointed by the Government of India, State Government,University Grants Commission, a sister University or anyacademic body and

f. For performing any other duty for the College.

g. Duty leave must be pre-authorized.
