Of course this isn’t the first time someone from the church has told you that. But think about it. We’re talking about the God of the universe. The Creator of everything. The One who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. This God loves you with an unconditional, self-sacrificing, active love.

When you really consider it, it’s kind of crazy, but it’s also freeing. When the God of creation passionately loves us, then who can be against us? There is nothing that can bind us that He cannot break. What then should our response be to this liberating love? Surely it must be something more than the status quo.

This fall at Christ Church we invite you to join us in exploring this love and how we must respond to it. On Sunday, October 9th, we will launch our 2011 Fall Stewardship Campaign, Unleashing Love. Commitment Sunday will be on Sunday, November 13th when everyone will be invited to express their intentions for how they will participate in the life and ministry of our church in 2012. We will conclude the campaign on Sunday, November 20th as we celebrate the profound love that God has shown us.

During these seven weeks, we will study how the love of Christ unleashes us to live in a way that is radically different, and how we, as His church, can unleash His love into the world. The sermon series and small group curriculum for the campaign will be based on the New York Times best-selling book, Crazy Love – Overwhelmed by a Relentless God, by Francis Chan.

John Wesley and Christian Stewardship UNITED METHODIST MOMENT

There are two areas to highlight when recalling John Wesley’s preaching and teaching on Christian stewardship. The first has to do with use of time and the second, with the use of money.

Wesley, the teacher, said of the use of time: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” While Wesley taught that Christians were to attend to “works of piety” (regular presence in worship, daily Bible study, weekly meeting together for prayer, and so on), he also taught that a life was not lived entirely faithfully without “works of mercy” (care for the needy, visiting the sick and imprisoned, feeding the hungry, etc.). One’s worshipful work led naturally to service since gratitude to God could easily be seen in hospitality toward others.

Dr. Albert Outler, a great Wesleyan historian, now living with the saints in God’s presence, once told how Wesley spent five consecutive days walking up and down the streets of London in the dead of winter, when he was well past 80 years old, raising money to clothe those without winter coats. Wesley’s early “societies” taught literacy classes, operated medical clinics, dispensed medicines, provided room and board for the destitute, helped others start small-scale cottage industries, fought against slavery, advocated for the humane treatment of prisoners, reformed educational practices, equipped leaders for service in the church, created food pantries, distributed pamphlets on numerous topics. . . .the list goes on! The bottom line was that he never “trifled away” any time if there was a need to be met. If he was not preaching, teaching, journaling, or traveling on horseback to his next engagement, he was actively engaged in doing “good” in God’s name, both inside and outside the church. For Wesley, personal servanthood involved the giving of his time and energy to ministry, the same ministry to which all baptized Christians are called.

Wesley’s preaching on financial stewardship is articulated in his sermon, “The Use of Money.” In it, he made these three points: 1) gain all you can; 2) save all you can; and 3) give all you can. “Gaining” came by hard work, taking initiative, due diligence – not for the pursuit of wealth, but out of a set of values rooted in love of God and neighbor. “Saving” was defined as refraining from needless spending, not putting money away for some future want. Too much is spent, Wesley said, to win another’s approval or gratify one’s desires. “Giving,” for Wesley, meant giving it all!

Wesley had learned as a young college student that he could live on a certain amount each week. Over the years as his income increased, he continued to live on that same amount and gave the rest away. As the story goes, that amount was 28 pounds. So when he made 30 pounds in his first year of teaching, he gave 2 away. When he made 60 the next year, he gave 32 away. In his third year, when he increased to 90 pounds, he gave 62 pounds away! This pattern continued throughout his lifetime! I think he may have even coined the phrase about money burning a hole in one’s pocket, for he once told his sister, “Money never stays with me. It would burn me if it did. I throw it out of my hands as soon as possible, lest it should find its way into my heart.” He told his friends that if he had more than 10 pounds in his possession at his death then they should memorialize him as a thief and a robber!

I wonder what Wesley would say about stewardship today. Likely, the same things. What mattered most to him was “holy living” and such included decisions on how to spend time and money and any other of our God-given resources to and for the glory of God everywhere, all the time, on behalf of everyone. Thanks be to God.

A local church is faced with many challenges when a Senior

Pastor change occurs in the fall, for once September arrives

the church enters one of its busiest seasons. Stewardship

campaigns get underway, next year’s leaders are nominated,

staff evaluations are held and budget determinations have to be

made. Even the Christmas poinsettias and candles have to be

ordered to insure both quality and quantity, and a timely arrival!

Before the end of the summer, Morris had begun to think about

and work on a concept for this fall’s stewardship campaign.

By late July, he had pulled together a small group headed

by Glen and Gillian Smith. They sketched out a wonderful

campaign called “Never Thirst Again” which Glen presented

to the Leadership Council at their meeting on August 25th. This

campaign included coffee houses and a mission project to dig a

water well in Haiti or another place of need.

Because a large part of the “Never Thirst Again” concept had

been formulated in Morris’ mind, and because he was no longer

going to be the preacher or the leader behind the campaign,

the staff felt a need to meet with Glen and Gillian, re-work the

campaign, and set a time line. Gillian helped us do this in a

meeting on September 12th. There we decided that the “Never

Thirst Again” concept would be temporarily set aside and that

the new Senior Pastor would be invited and encouraged to

consider preaching a sermon series by that title early in 2012.

After all, the Communications team had already designed the

logo and ordered the coffee cups and mugs. The water well

mission project would remain a part of that sermon series since

it easily generated the most excitement. And the coffee houses

would be offered as fellowship events.

While it had not been presented as part of the initial concept,

the group knew that the principal resource for Morris’ campaign

was Francis Chan’s book, Crazy Love. Morris had integrated

the content of that book with the story of the encounter between

Jesus and the woman at the well in John 4. His aim was to

preach that real fullness can be found only in Jesus Christ.

In order to keep it simple for the Interim Pastor who would begin

the campaign, and for the new Senior Pastor, who would arrive

in the middle of the campaign, the group decided to simply use

Chan’s book and recently released study guide. The hope is

that by use of these materials all preaching and teaching will

focus on the same One who overwhelms the emptiness in our

lives – the One in whom we know God best, desire to create

community, and are inspired to impact the world.

Sunday School classes, HomeGroups and other small study

groups will be given Chan’s study book, Living in Crazy Love

and will follow the same schedule noted below. You’ll find much

more content than can be covered in a typical amount of class

time, so small group leaders will need to do some paring down

in ways that make sense for their class and setting.

Please be in prayer as we enter into this campaign. As Gillian

stated in her summary of chapter 10 of Chan’s book, “Love.

Risk. Listen to the Spirit. Be committed to live each day as if it is

your last before you meet Jesus.”

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - HOUSE BUILD GOING ON NOW Christ Church began construction of its 11th Habitat for Humanity house in the Teal Run Subdivision on September 24. Each Saturday we will need approximately 20 volunteers to work alongside the recipient of the home to complete the construction. If hammers and nails are not your strength, we also need folks to paint, install insulation, work on landscaping, and prepare and serve food for the volunteers. 2011 SOLES FOR SOULS CAMPAIGN THROUGH OCTOBER 16The 2011 campaign for Soles for Souls is underway. Soles for Souls is a Christ Church mission program which provides brand NEW tennis shoes for local students (K-12) in need who are serviced through the FBISD Shared Dreams or Lamar CISD Common Threads programs. for our power (Acts 1:8, 2 Tim. 1:7). Sadly, most believers

and churches are known for talent or intellect rather than

supernatural power. What’s worse is that we’re okay with it.

Could it be that we’ve forgotten the One who distinguishes us

from every religion and cult in the world?

Through solid scriptural support and compelling narrative,

breakthrough author Francis Chan returns us to the Holy

Spirit as the Bible describes Him. He reminds us that we were

not created and saved merely to survive our time on earth.

Chan contends that we’ve ignored the Spirit and are reaping

the disastrous results.

It’s time for the beloved church of Jesus Christ to reverse

the trend of neglect. Let’s pursue the Spirit-filled life of

effectiveness God desires and we desire.
