APRIL LETTER FROM PASTOR DIANNE

“Why Go to Cambodia?”

Why don’t you just stay here and save all of that travel money? There is plenty of work to do here in Cleveland. Why do you have to go all the way to Cambodia?

The answer about why I am going on this trip is a little different than the answer I would give for why I went to southern Ohio or even why I went to Haiti.

Cambodia’s history is unique. From 1969-1973, the country was bombed by the Republic of Vietnam and American governments as a way to disrupt the communist Viet Cong and Khmer Rouge factions. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge took control of the country. In an attempt to eradicate all western influence, and to return Cambodia to an agrarian society, they massacred between 2 and 3 million Cambodians – most of the educated class.

Because there was no formal education in Cambodia during the time period from 1970-1991 when peace was restored, an entire generation of Cambodians are lacking in knowledge and training.

However, Christianity is growing in Cambodia at a rapid pace – and educated pastors and teachers are in short supply. Thus, our role on this trip will be to provide classes in pastoral care, worship leadership, sacraments, preaching, small group leadership, and Bible study. Our intent is not to be in mission to, but mission with, the Cambodian people, helping them to understand the Wesleyan way and how it best fits into their context.

It will not be our job to convert people to Christianity, but rather to share the joy of the Christian message and help Cambodian pastors and teachers to do the same. We will have the chance to meet not only with pastors, but with teens and children.

I am extremely excited about this chance to learn from the Cambodian people and to share with them my Christian journey, and even more, to learn of their own. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, and can’t wait to share with you all when I return.

So – Fear Not,

Dianne

HELP SUPPORT OUR MISSIONARY! Christ United Methodist Church has a rare opportunity to

support our very own Missionary, our pastor Dianne Tobey Covault! Pastor Dianne has been invited to be part of a select group of

14 people, including Bishop Tracy Smith Malone and District Superintendent Steve Bailey, to travel to the South East Asian Country of Cambodia from June 26 to July 8, 2019.

The focus of the trip will be to provide instruction to Cambodian pastors in basic ministry skills related to Bible study, preaching and worship, pastoral care, small group ministries, discipleship and evangelism. Cambodian pastors have little training and few opportunities for continuing education. Taking the training to where they live and offering it at no cost to them is essential for raising their professional competency and strengthening their future ministry.

While our Conference will cover half of the cost, our Congregation is being asked to raise $1,750.00 in support of our missionary, Pastor Dianne.

Our church does have some available funds to tap into, but we are also asking for your financial support to help fund this fantastic opportunity for the congregation.

When Dianne returns, she will give a presentation about this journey on Sunday, August 4, at a luncheon following worship, which will feature authentic Cambodian cuisine.

If you would like to contribute toward Dianne’s trip, please mark your contribution “Cambodia Mission Fund.” Thank you for helping to fund this important ministry.

Every three months we will celebrate together with those who have had birthdays during the prior 3 months. We will sing “Happy Birthday” and enjoy cake and ice cream.

Like all good clubs, there are dues for the 2019 Birthday Club. A donation based on the number of birthdays you have had; while $1.00 per year is suggested…you may join for more (or less) per year. The funds generated will be deposited into our “Full Time Pastor Fund” which will be used in support of our fulltime pastor, Reverend Dianne Tobey Covault, when the Conference is no longer paying a portion of her compensation package.

Thankfully the Conference has paid 25% of the financial support of our pastor for 2018/2019 … and they may again pay a portion for 2019/2020…but eventually we will be expected to pay the pastor’s full compensation package. Your continued financial support and the 2019 Birthday Club will help us plan for the future.

Join the 2019 Birthday Club today and help us on the correct Road!

Sunday, March 31: January thru March birthdays Sunday, June 23: April thru June birthdays

Sunday, September 29: July thru September birthdays Sunday, December 29: October thru December birthdays

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

On Ash Wednesday, March 6th, Pastor Dianne and Pastor Jason, West Park UCC, led our service, which included the imposition of ashes. A few UCC members joined us.

All those who attended were invited to the UMW soup luncheon. We thank Jill and Janis Pongallo for the potato soup and chicken and egg salad sandwiches; and Monta Demchak, Sharon Zothner and Shirley Schneider for cookies; and

Mitzi Herrick and Ruby Cunningham for olives. We appreciate Ori Greitzer’s and Sharon Zothner’s help in serving. There were 14 UMW members and 8 guests. A generous free will offering was received ($45).

The balance in our treasury today is $804. Disbursements were passed to donate $50 each to Church Women United, Flat Rock Home, Nehemiah Mission, Ohio Guidestone, and West Side Community House. Also we renewed our donations of $101 to the UMW North Coast District and $300 to Christ UMC (for mission apportionments or supplement for the pastor’s salary). An extra gift of $3 increased the UMW District donation to $102 and our final balance to $100 (including offering).

We will not be able to have a Tea this May. We may have a Wednesday evening on missions.

Bakers and sellers are needed for our Bake Sale during the Rummage Sale on April 4, 5 & 6.

--- Ruby Cunningham, President
