    The Celebrant kisses the Altar then

    faces the congregation (as may any

    co-celebrants) standing in the mid-

    dle, with no one in front of him be-

    tween him and the congregation,

    with Deacons and Subdeacons stand-

    ing before him to either side. He

    shall intone The Blessing of GodAlmighty, whereupon, with his con-

    sent, such Priests and those of higher

    rank may join him in the Blessing.

    The congregation shall remain kneel-

    ing (or standing if there are no kneel-

    ers).

    C. The Blessing of GodAlmighty + The Father, + theSon and the + Holy Spirit, de-

    scend upon you, be amongstyou, and remain with you,now and forever and unto all

    THE RECESSIONAL

    If a recessional hymn be used, the

    people shall stand during it, and in

    any event during the retirement of the

    clergy.

    It is customary to kiss the feet of our

    Lord on the processional cross once

    its bearer returns from the procession

    to the front of the Royal Doors.

    (Depending on local custom, they

    shall then be seated and remain so till

    the altar candles be extinguished.)

    Then shall the priest give the dis-

    missal, concluding with these words:

    C. Go forth now into theworld, loving thy neighbor asthyself and rejoice in the

    power of the Holy Spirit.

    R. Thanks be to God.

    C. In the Name of the Fa-ther, [+] and of the [+] Son,

    and of the [+] Holy Spirit.Amen. (The Celebrant alone crosseshimself at the end of the Divine

    Liturgy, and so too does he alone say

    ANOINTING AFTER THEDIVINE LITURGY

    The Eastern Rite practices anduse of Wheat, seven Priests,shrine lamp, the reading of the

    reading of the seven selectionsfrom the Gospels and Epistles,et ceterae, are not followed in

    the Gregorian Rite of Anointingafter Divine Liturgy.

    Those who are to be anointed

    DIVINE LITURGY OF THE

    CHRISM- HOLY OIL -

    ORTHODOX GREGORIAN

    (WESTERN) RITE

    This liturgy may only beprayed by the presidingdiocesan (Arch)Bishop (or

    one retired from that office),Metropolitan, Primate, Patri-arch, Bishop Superior Gen-

    eral, or Bishop Abbot. It maynever be prayed by a Priest,or an suffragen or auxiliary

    Bishop.

    (Preparation and some forms

    of anointing primarily rela-tive to Holy Thursday)

    Holy Chrism or Holy Oil is com-posed primarily of Olive Oil and

    Balsm. Balsm is simply oil of anaromatic, resinous substancethat is extracted from (the wood

    of) certain trees or plants, espe-cially those belonging to theterebinthine group or family. It

    is primarily olive oil with theaddition of various aromaticessences, patterned after that

    described in Exodus 30:22-33.It can be made by any bishop,but in smaller jurisdictions it is

    made by the primate, who thendistributes it.

    Common proportions in placeswhere balsm or oil essences aredifficult to obtain are:

    Approximately one gallon or

    four liters of Holy Oil composed

    of three quarters olive oil, one-eighth wine, and the one-eighth balance being roughly

    equal proportions of (oils of thefollowing where possible) Or-ange, Cinnamon, Nutmeg,

    Cloves, Balsam, Benzoin,

    Frankincense, Jasmine, Musk,Ambergris, Civet, Lemon, Berg-

    amot, Myrrh and other aro-matic essences. (Romans donot use wine, and prepare three

    oils: one for Extreme Unction,one for anointing those who areto be Baptized and for anointing

    the priests hands at his ordina-tion, and one for the Sacramentof Chrismation or Confirmation,

    anointing the Bishops foreheadat his consecration as bishop,consecration of chalice, paten

    and star, dedication of a churchor altar.)

    THE LITURGY

    The Prothesis IS prayed.There is NO Asperges.

    This Divine Liturgy should beprayed early in the morning,preferably beforesunrise but

    after the third hour. Exceptfor the ill or confined, the Sa-cred Elements may only be

    received at this DivineLiturgy, or the evening DivineLiturgy of the Lords Supper.

    These are the only DivineLiturgies allowed this day.

    The Celebrant may NOTpray

    both of the Divine Liturgy of

    the Chrism and the DivineLiturgy of the Lords Supperthis day, NOR may both be

    prayed on the same Altar.

    Clergy vest as usual in white.Additional Clergy should vest

    as in choir.

    The Asperges is omitted

    The Divine Liturgy beginswith procession in the usualmanner.

    LITURGY OF THECATECHUMENS

    The congregation stands dur-ing the processional hymn.The congregation KNEELS (ifthere are no kneelers, thecongregation remains stand-ing) as the Divine Liturgy be-gins and the celebrantchants or recites:

    V. Blessed is the kingdom

    of the [+] Father, and of the,[+] Son and of the [+] Holy

    Spirit, now and unto all agesof ages,

    Here the congregationkneels, or remains standingif there are no kneelers.

    The Choir may begin singing

    the Introit just prior to the invo-

    cation, or at this point, or when

    the Celebrant begins to ascendto the Altar as he is prayingTake away from us . . .

    Rising from his bow, the Cele-brant prays:

    V. I will go unto the altarof God.

    R. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

    PSALM 43 is omitted.

    The Celebrant bows while pray-ing:V. Our help is in the [+]

    Celebrant: I confess toGod, to Blessed Mary, evervirgin, to all the Angels and

    Saints, and to you, mybrethren (the Celebrant turnsto the other Clergy on either

    side and then back), that Ihave sinned exceedingly inthought, word and deed, by

    my own fault (striking hisbreast). I beg Holy Mary theBlessed Theotokos, all the An-

    gles and Saints of God, andyou, my brethren (again turn-ing towards and then from the

    other Clergy), to pray for me.

    R. Almighty God have

    THE

    POST-COMMUNION COLLECT

    The Celebrant then returns to

    the middle of the Altar, turns toface the congregation, andprays:

    C. The Lord be with you.R. And with thy spirit.

    C. Let us pray.

    The congregation herekneels, or remains standingif there are no kneelers.

    The Celebrant then faces theAltar and prays the Collects.

    C. O Lord, as we leave thethings of the past and turn to

    the new, may we put off ourold nature and be renewed inholiness of mind. We ask this

    through Our Lord JesusChrist, Thy Son, Who livethand reigneth with Thee in the

    unity of the Holy Spirit, God,

    throughout all ages of ages.

    R. Amen.

    CONCLUSION OF THEDIVINE LITURGY

    THE DISMISSAL

    The Celebrant and all Clergy at

    the Altar then turn to the con-gregation.

    C. The Lord be with you.R. And with thy spirit.

    THE CELEBRANT'S PRAYEROF THANKSGIVING

    The Celebrant then faces theAltar, and prays:

    C. Let the obedient per-formance of my bounded dutybe pleasing unto Thee, O Holy

    Trinity, and grant that thissacrifice which I, unworthythat I am, have offered in the

    sight of Thy Divine Majesty,may be acceptable unto Theeand may through Thy mercy,

    obtain Thy favour for myselfand for all those in whose be-half I have offered it. Who

    livest and reignest, God,throughout all ages of ages.

    kneeling, give thanks for theprecious Gifts which theyhave received.

    The congregation should re-main kneeling or standing ifthere are no kneelers (if not

    physically disabled) until the

    doors of the Tabernacle beclosed - or until the Celebrantcleanses the particles of Sa-cred Bread from his fingersinto the Chalice and drinksit thus signifying there nolonger is exposed on the Al-tar, the Sacred Elements.

    The congregation is thenseated.

    The Subdeacon then dries theinside of the Chalice with thepurificator (or the Celebrant

    may do this, in accordance withlocal custom). The Chalice andPaten may be cleansed, or

    straightaway, the veils foldedupon them and, with the Anti-mensium, removed to the Altar

    of Prothesis.

    A small reserve of the conse-crated Bread and Wineshould be reserved Good Fri-day and for viaticum.

    The Celebrant then continues,hands on the Altar or folded athis lips:

    C. What we have partakenwith our mouth, O Lord, maywe receive with a pure heart,

    and of a temporal gift, may itbecome to us an eternal rem-

    edy. May this Communion

    cleanse us from sin, O Lord,and make us partakers of aheavenly healing.

    C. May the Body andBlood which we have re-

    ceived, cleave unto our

    hearts, O Lord; and grant thatno stain of sin may remain in

    us, having been fed with thispure and Holy Sacrament.Who livest and reignest in the

    THE COMMUNION

    ANTIPHON

    The Celebrant then prays the

    Communion Antiphon, facingthe Altar, hands extended, theBook being on the Gospel side.At which the congregationstands.

    Thou doest love justice and

    hate wickedness: thereforeGod, thy God, hast anointedthee.

    Then the Celebrant prays:

    C. Lord, let Thy benedic-

    tion and Thy grace descendupon all who have receivedThy Holy Body and Blood.

    R. We have seen the true

    The congregation makestheir confession, bowingwhile praying:

    Those at the altar, except the

    Blessed Mary, ever virgin, toall the Angels and Saints, andto you, Father, that I have

    sinned exceedingly inthought, word, and deed, bymy own fault (striking theirbreasts). I beg Holy Mary, theBlessed Theotokos all the An-gels and Saints of God, and

    THE GENERAL

    This is NOT a valid substitute

    for individual SacramentalConfession and Absolution,

    and should NOT be abused assuch.

    Celebrant: (Turning to his rightuntil he faces the congregation)Almighty God have mercy

    upon you, forgive you yoursins, and bring you to ever-lasting life.

    C: May the Almighty andMerciful Lord grant you par-don + absolution and remis-

    sion of all your sins.

    THE MAIN CELEBRANT turnsto his left, facing the altar, and

    ASCENDS TO THE ALTAR,praying as follows, while thoseothers at the altar join his as-

    cent and take their variousplaces, main celebrant in thecenter.

    The Choir may now sing the In-troit if it did not so do at the

    beginning of the prayers at the

    completed when the Celebrantbegins the Kyrie.

    into the holy of holies with

    Celebrant bows, prayingsilently

    C. We pray Thee, Lord, byThy saints whose relics arehere (kissing the antimensium)

    and of all the saints, thatThou wilt deign to pardon allmy sins. Amen

    Deacon, soft voice.

    D. Master, pray bless thisincense.

    Celebrant, soft voice, placesthree spoonfuls of incense intothe thurible, praying:

    C. May He bless thee, inwhose honor thou shalt burn.

    Amen.

    The Celebrant then takes the

    thurible from the Deacon, andcenses to the High Place inthree groups of three, then

    censes three times those relicson the altar. He then censesthe altar front from left to right

    in seven places above and then

    seven places along the front,

    proceeding to the right side inthree places, to the back inseven places, to the left side in

    three places. Then the Deacontakes the thurible from the Cel-ebrant and incenses him (three

    groups of three for Bishops and

    Mitered Archpriests, threegroups of two for Archpriests

    and Priests). The Celebrantthen begins the Introit, whilethe Deacon censes the icons

    within the Iconostasis begin-ning at the right side wall, pro-ceeding around the rear of the

    altar, and so until the Epistlewall, the through the RoyalDoors where he censes first the

    Evangelists, then the Icon ofOur Lord and the Icons on thatside of the Iconostasis, then

    that of His Mother and theIcons on that side of the Iconos-tasis. He may then cense the

    remaining Icons within theTemple, beginning with thosenearest the Epistle side of the

    Iconostasis, returning from theGospel side through the RoyalDoors - or the Priest or Cele-

    brant may do these things ifthere is no Deacon.

    THE INTROIT(ENTRANCE ANTIPHON)

    (To be prayed by Celebrant fromthe Altar Missal. Bishops andMitered Archpriests stand at

    the middle, Priests and Arch-priests stand at the Epistle cor-ner, and return to the middle

    for the Kyrie.)

    THE COMMUNION OF THE

    FAITHFUL

    The Celebrant then continues,

    facing the congregation:

    C. Behold the Lamb of

    God, behold Him that taketh

    away the sins of the world.

    The congregation with theCelebrant then pray three

    times:the bell being rung onceeach time.

    C. and All: Lord, I am not

    worthy that Thou shouldstcome under my roof; butspeak the word only and my

    soul shall be healed.

    Here shall all ChrismatedOrthodox Christians advanceto the Iconostasis at theRoyal Doors (or to the altarrail) to receive Holy Commu-nion under the form of bothSacred Species, receivingThe Holy Bread from Heavenupon the tongue and partak-ing of The Precious Blood

    from the Chalice. The Spoon(and Intincture) may be used.Infants usually receive theConsecrated Wine.

    The Communion songs maybe begun.

    RECEPTION OF HOLY

    COMMUNION

    Those administering the Con-

    secrated Bread, pray for each

    who receives:

    P/D. May the + Body of ourLord Jesus Christ, which was

    given for thee, preserve thybody and soul unto everlast-ing life.

    R. Amen.

    Those administering the Con-

    secrated Wine, pray for eachwho receives:

    P/D. May the Blood of ourLord Jesus Christ, which wasshed for thee, preserve thy

    body and soul unto everlast-ing life. R. Amen.

    If Holy Communion is receivedwith the Spoon or by Intinc-ture, then is said (except the +

    If you are not to receive Holy

    The congregation, having re-ceived the Holy Communion,

    Then the Blood

    C. What reward shall Igive unto the Lord for all thebenefits He hath done unto

    me? I will receive the cup ofsalvation, and call upon theName of the Lord, which is

    worthy to be praised so shallI be safe from mine enemies.

    C. May the Blood of ourLord Jesus Christ, which wasshed for me, preserve my

    body and soul unto everlast-ing life.

    The Celebrant then drinks fromthe Chalice three times, aftereach time, lifting the Chalice

    and saying Amen.

    AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!

    The Celebrant them kisses theCrucifix or the feet of our Lords

    Icon on the Chalice, and the

    base of the Chalice. He wipes

    the edge of the Chalice and hislips with the purificator, pray-ing: C: O Lord, as I wipe away

    Thine Blood from my lips,may Thou wipe away my sinsfrom my soul.

    Here the congregation whoarrived after the GeneralConfession, make their con-

    fession.

    When the Celebrant returnsto the Altar, all stand and

    remain standing during theOffertory procession.

    While the song O Redeemer ischanted or said, the Celebrantopens his Antimensium as far

    from the front edge of the Altaras possible, so the top third isopen. The Celebrant and Dea-

    con, and those in procession,go to the Altar of Prothesis. TheBishop hands the container of

    prepared oil (Chrism) to one of

    the Priests, places the large veil

    on the left shoulder of the Dea-con, and hands him the paten,hands the chalice to the Priest,

    and process through theIconostasis through the Gospelside door, in order Paten, Chal-

    ice, Oil, through the Temple,

    and back up through the RoyalDoors. The paten is placed on

    the Gospel side of the Antimen-sium, the chalice on the Epistleside, with the bottom edge of

    the Antimensium over the baseof each. The oil is placed be-tween the Antimensium and

    the front edge of the Altar.

    O Redeemer, receive the song

    of those who sing Thy praise.A tree made fruitful by thefostering light of the sun

    fruit-bearing trees. From thefruit of the olive tree Thouhast provided us with oil for

    holy chrism. The prophet

    David sang of the life and joythat the oil would bring us in

    the sacraments Thy love hastgiven to us. After the aveng-ing flood, the dove returning

    to Noah with an olive branchannounced Thy gift of peace.This was a sign of a greater

    gift to come. Now the watersof baptism wash away the sinsof men, and by the anointing

    with olive oil Thou doestmake us radiant with Thy joy.At Thy command, Aaron was

    washed with water, and Thyservant Moses, his brother,anointed him priest. This too

    foreshadowed greater thingsto come. After Thy Son, JesusChrist our Lord, asked John

    for baptism in the waters ofJordan, Thou sent the Spiritupon him in the form of a

    dove and by the witness ofThy own voice Thou declaredhim to be your only, well-

    beloved Son. In this Thouclearly fulfilled the prophecyof David, that Christ would be

    anointed with the oil of glad-ness beyond his fellow men.

    C. And so, Father, we askThee to bless (+) this oil Thouhast created. Fill it with the

    power of Thy Holy Spirit

    through Christ Thy Son. It is

    from Him that chrism takesits name and with chrismThou hast anointed for Thy-

    self priests and kings,prophets and martyrs. Makethis chrism a sign of life and

    salvation for those who are to

    be born again in the waters ofbaptism. Wash away the evil

    they have inherited from sin-ful Adam, and when they areanointed with this holy oil

    make them temples of Thyglory, radiant with the good-ness of life that has its source

    in Thee.

    C. Through this sign of

    chrism grant them royal,priestly, and prophetichonor, and clothe them with

    incorruption. Let this be in-deed the chrism of salvationfor those who will be born

    again of water and the HolySpirit. May they come toshare eternal life in the glory
