President’s message

Summer is officially here and we are getting to

some very exciting events in the coming months.

There is no better way to celebrate our country’s

birthday than to do it cruising down a parade route

and following TCOC tradition we will be

participating in the Lake Forest 4th of July Parade.

This parade is very well run with a good pace so

those that fear the heat (both outside and under the

hood) don’t have to worry! We will be meeting at

the CVS off El Toro Road and Muirlands before

heading over to the parade route. After the parade

our VP welcomed us to his house for a party

Thunderbird Circle style, the club will provide the

burgers and hot dogs and we ask each family to

bring an appetizer or dessert. Details about the

day can be found later in this newsletter.

We also have some exciting events that are coming

together for the remainder of the summer. In

August we have the Wounded

Warrior car show and our own Ed Zaleski is

working on putting together a cruise on up to Julian

to explore the old western town, scout for gold in an

old gold mine, and eat some of the world’s best

apple pie! Be sure to check your email for further

details as they become available. Also, in

September we have a chance to show off our cars

at the only all Thunderbird car show in Anaheim

called Pageant of the Thunderbird.

I’m excited for all these opportunities to show off

our cars and I hope to see all of you there!

4th of July Parade and Party Activity

As you all know Thunderbird Circle, Orange County is participating in the Lake Forest 4th of July parade this year. It is very unfortunate that our President (Chris Pond) will not be able to host this event this year so I will take over his activities and hope to do as good a job as he would.

Both Chris and I participated in the event meeting held by the Lake Forest Parade Committee and now have the details for staging including, location, time, what to bring and so on.

After the parade we will caravan (no freeway's) to Irene and Ed Zaleski's house for an awesome patio party including food, beverages and hanging out with good friends. For those that feel like a swim our pool is open (pool temp should be between 85 to 92 degrees). We hope to have as many cars and friends as possible so don't be shay as the more the merrier. I would ask that you RSVP to one of the following email addresses or just call Irene and/or myself so that we can have plenty of food on hand:

Welcome to a new year and another month in the Sunshine Corner! Congratulations to all who stayed healthy this month. We want to wish all members that are under the weather and/or recovering from surgeries a speedy recovery. Joe LiPuma said his recent dizzy and fainting was due to low blood sugar levels. All other test turned up negative. June Lipuma who had rotator cup surgery a few months back is doing well although she still has a few more months’ recovery to go. Joyce Peluso has fully recovered. Richard Helms is recovering well from his knee replacement. He is still using a cane occasionally to get around. If I have missed anyone, please give me a call and let me know how you are doing or if you have any planned surgeries.

See Sunshine Report continued on page 9

My 56 Ford Thunderbird Was a Work in Progress

By Vance Durgin

“I’d been looking for one for quite a while,” Glenn Still, of Laguna Hills, says of the 1956 Ford Thunderbird he bought five years ago as a work in progress. “I knew a fella who had started a (Thunderbird) project and had passed away. Another friend bought it and was going to restore it. He’s got like six of them so I asked, ‘Have you thought about selling it?’”

Still, 80, says he was attracted to the classic two-seater by “the styling and the value – it’s a car that will retain its value.” Ford produced the vintage two-seat T-Birds for just three model years: 1955-57.

The friend agreed to sell, but had disassembled the car for repainting. That didn’t bother Still, however.

“I was an engineer for Ford and have done other cars,” he says. “It didn’t need that much to finish it. It just needed things put back on more than anything else.”

The car is equipped with most factory options. “The

only thing it doesn’t have is a soft top,” Still says. The cars came with a removable hardtop; a soft top was optional.

“It drives fine,” Still notes. “It’s a typical ’56 car, the way they drove in that time. It’s a toy, not a daily driver.” He adds that he plans to “just keep it. I think I have a couple of sons and grandsons that will have their eye on it eventually.”

Health Tips for July

Buckle your seat belt

The simple act of buckling up is the best way to save lives and reduce injuries from crashes.

Buckle your seat belt every time you drive or

ride in a motor vehicle.

Make sure children are properly buckled up in a

seat belt, booster seat, or car seat, whichever

is appropriate for their age, height, and weight.

Make sure all passengers are buckled in before

driving.

Swimming

Swimming is a fun, active, and healthy way to spend leisure time. Take a few minutes to keep health and safety in mind to help prevent illness and injury.

Ask a buddy to join you when swimming so you

don’t swim alone.

Choose swimming sites that have lifeguards.

Avoid drinking alcohol before and during

swimming.

Don’t swallow pool water.

Don't swim when you have diarrhea. Germs

can spread in the water and make other people

sick.

Take a shower and wash your child before

swimming.

Take your kids on bathroom breaks every 60

minutes, or check diapers every 30-60 minutes.

Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-

changing area and not at poolside. Germs can

spread in and around the pool.

Wash your hands after using the toilet or

changing diapers before getting in the pool.

Watch children in and around water at all times.

Make sure to keep your ears as dry as possible

to help prevent swimmer’s ear.

Leave Fireworks to Professionals

Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.

Avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper, which often means they were made for professional displays and could be dangerous for consumers.

Make sure you, your kids, and others watch fireworks displays from a safe distance.

Call 911 immediately if someone is injured from fireworks.

Camping

Camping is a fun way to get family and friends together to enjoy the outdoors. Take a few minutes to help ensure your camping trip is safe and healthy.

Ask your health care provider if you are up-to-date on recommended vaccinations before your camping trip. Make an appointment to get them if needed.

Pack healthy snacks, water, adequate clothes, and a first-aid kit.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Before you leave, be sure you put out your campfire completely.

Put on protective gear, such as helmets, sturdy shoes, and life jackets, depending on the activity.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use fuel-burning equipment, such as gas stoves, heaters, lanterns, and charcoal grills, inside or near a tent, camper, or other enclosed shelter.

Some wild animals carry diseases that are dangerous to people. Enjoy watching wild animals from a safe distance in their natural surroundings.

Put on insect repellent containing 20% or more DEET.

Wear light colored clothing so you can see ticks better. Check yourself, your family, and your pets for ticks, and remove them promptly.

Protect yourself from the sun. Put on sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and cover up with clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Please don’t forget to keep me in the loop once you hear of anyone who is ill or is having or had surgery. We wish everyone good health, and stay safe! Until next month:

ELECTRICAL CONCERNS

An Electrical Drain By Bob DePaola

Remove the positive battery cable off and connect the test light between the battery cable (you just took off) and the battery post it came from. If the light shines you have a drain. If it doesn't shine, your battery may have an internal short. To troubleshoot the drain, disconnect the B wire from your voltage regulator. If the light goes off, put the B wire back on and lift the other two (generator) wires off your voltage regulator. If it still stays on, your regulator is shorted to ground. Remove the voltage regulator cover and inspect the relays, the normally open contact on the far RH side may be stuck together, a coil may be shorted or the resistors may be bad. If your light stays on when pulling the B wire off your regulator, put it back on and go to the starter solenoid. Disconnect the battery wires from that post. All the wires to your dash, windows, seats and headlights start here. If the light goes off when you pull the wires off the starter solenoid, follow the yellow wire. Make sure it isn't frayed and arcing anywhere. This wire has no fuse.

How to Find a 12 Volt Wiring Short By Jonra Springs

1. Remove the positive terminal from the battery by loosening the terminal bolt with an adjustable wrench. Pull the cable away from the battery to prevent the terminal from making contact with the positive post. 2. Refer to the wiring schematic for 12-volt electrical systems in cars to find all the electrical wiring involved in the non-functioning device. Locate each of the physical wires in the car that are shown in the wiring diagram. 3. Set a multimeter to "ohms" to perform continuity tests on each of the wires. Zero out the ohms scale on an analog multimeter by touching the leads together and setting the needle on zero with the calibrating wheel or dial. 4. Touch one lead to one end of a wire and the other lead to the other end. Avoid touching the leads while taking a reading, as your skin will affect the resistance being measured. Use long lead extension wires with alligator clip ends if necessary for reaching both ends of long wires. 5. Read the ohms values shown on the meter display. A reading reflected by any number shows a good wire. An infinite reading shows a short in the wire. Replace any wire that proves to have a short with this test to restore service to the on-board appliance.

Electrical Leaks

Electrical leaks are an unwanted current flow and can occur due to worn or damage insulation, corroded connections or excessive dampness. This is nothing more annoying than jumping into your Thunderbird in full anticipation of an enjoyable drive and finding the battery too low to start the car. If you think you have an electrical leak (or short) that is running down your battery here’s how to find it:

1. Turn off everything that uses electricity. 2. Remove the battery cable that goes to the starter solenoid from the battery. 3. Connect a multimeter set to measure DC volts between the battery terminal and the cable. If it reads battery voltage there is leakage or a short. 4. Switch your meter to read DC amps (start on the highest range to prevent damage to the meter) and measure the current flow. If the reading is 1 amp or more then quite likely there is something still turned on. Any current flow between 1 amp and .01 amps is a major electrical leak. Less than .01 amps is a minor leak. 5. If a leak is detected, first clean the battery terminals, battery top, and battery cables, then one a time remove fuses and disconnect wires until the current drops to zero. When it does, you’ve found the source of the leak.

Tracking Down the Suspect Fuse

Tracking down the circuit that is draining the battery gets harder if the problem is intermittent. Current drains can often be found by unplugging

connectors or removing fuses and then using an ammeter or test light to bridge the disconnected electrical contacts. There is current draining away if the test light turns on or the ammeter gives an amp reading. However, disconnecting connectors or pulling fuses might also sometimes only hinder diagnosis by inadvertently making the problem temporarily go away.

This is especially true for newer, computerized cars. Disconnecting power might reset the computer controlling a problem circuit so that the problem temporarily disappears. For example, maybe a body computer is staying on forever

because it is receiving a signal that a door is still ajar. Disconnecting power to the computer or the door sensor might reset everything back to normal until the next time the offending door is opened or some other trigger reactivates the problem. Disconnecting things can delay tracking down intermittent problems on cars from almost any era. Diodes, capacitors, electromagnetic relays and other basic electronic components with problems might be temporarily “reset” if their host part is unhooked from the vehicle’s positive and/or ground connections.

Here is another method for troubleshooting battery drains. Instead of unplugging stuff and using the ammeter function on your multimeter, leave everything hooked up and use the multi-meter’s voltmeter function set to millivolts. Voltage (V) equals current (I) multiplied by resistance (R) or V=I x R. Everything, even the best automotive wire or fuse, has at least some tiny resistance. R is always greater than zero. Therefore, any current (I) flowing through a fuse (with R resistance) will create a measurable voltage (V) drop across the fuse.

Remember to set the multi-meter to millivolts. The fuse’s resistance is very small so the voltage across the fuse will be small. Put the meter’s probes on the exposed ends of old style glass fuses. Put the probes on the two exposed contact points on the backs of blade fuses (see photo). If the measured millivolts are anything above zero, then current is passing through that fuse and the circuit protected by that fuse might contain the malfunctioning part that is draining the battery. It might be normal for current to be traveling through some fuses even when the engine is off and the key is out of the ignition. New cars often have systems that are designed to stay powered up for minutes or even hours after the car is turned off.

Old cars may have clocks, alarms and other systems that always draw current but not enough to quickly drain the car battery.

Comparing millivolt readings from known and unfamiliar fuses can help track down something abnormal. Let’s say the fuse for the dome light circuit has four millivolts across it when the dome light is on. That means another circuit with a seven millivolt reading across its fuse would definitely drain the battery if allowed to draw current indefinitely after the car is shut off.

Continue to track down the problem by using the owner’s manual or service manual to find out what parts and systems are on a suspect fuse’s circuit.

This year your club has changed the 4th of July

Parade to attend. We will be attending the 23rd Annual 4th of July Parade at Lake Forest. Of course the parade will be on the 4th of July. Those who will be in the parade will meet in the Walgreens Pharmacy parking lot located at 24382 Muirlands Blvd. and caravan to the parade route. After the parade we will again caravan back to Chris & Katie Pond’s home for the clubs 4th of July party. For party information please see the flyer on page 8 in this issue.

The parade officials would like us to check in between 8:00 & 9:30AM. We must be at the assembly point by 9:30 AM. The staging area is at Ridge Route near Jeronimo the start of the parade is at El Toro High School located on Toledo Way. The parade route is about 1 ½ miles long. We are to enter the staging area which starts Ridge Route just east of Jeronimo.

We will then proceed east to Toledo Way where the start of the parade begins at El Toro High School. The plan is to depart the Walgreens Pharmacy parking lot 8:30 AM at the latest so we can caravan there together. The parade will last about an hour. This will give us plenty of time for those who wish to decorate their cars.

Thunderbirds are needed to participate in the parade. If you would like to participate please contact Ed Zaleski by calling 714-544-6698 or email: [email protected]. You can also call Tom Peluso at 951-746-3375 or email: [email protected]. Ed or Tom will try to give them a car count as soon as possible. If they are not at home please leave a message with your name and car description including color and year.

Parade participants: Meet at 8:30 AM meet in the Walgreens Pharmacy parking lot located at 24382 Muirlands Blvd. Lake Forrest. Coffee & donut will be supplied. Phone #949-767-7184 or Cell #949-540-3561. Caravan to parade together at 9:00AM

The July Club event will once again take place on July 4th at the home of our VP Ed Zaleski. The party will start at 1.00 PM or when we get back from the parade.

All Club members are asked to RSVP to Ed & Irene on or after June 1st but before July 1st. Please bring an appetizer, salad or a dessert to share. Appetizers are preferred as last year we had too many desserts. However I do know someone who is very into desserts and was very happy with the overabundance. We have broken the needs down as follows: If your last name starts with A-H; please bring a salad, I-O please bring a dessert; P-Z please bring an appetizer. The club will provide the main course of hamburgers and hot dogs, buns, all the condiments, soft drinks, water and the like.

Please let Ed & Irene know you will be coming and how many. For more information call Ed & Irene at 714-544-6698 or email: them at: [email protected].
