President’s message
I don't know about you all but it seems like this year
is flying by. Hopefully you are getting a chance to
spend time with family, friends, and your two-seater
Tbird. Although I personally haven't been able the
spend much time on our 57 Tbird I have been
blessed to spend quite a lot of time with family and
friends this summer and I hope you all have as
well.
Oftentimes I hear fellow car enthusiasts’ state that
car clubs are becoming obsolete due to the
proliferation of data access via the internet. If you
doubt this statement, spend 10 minutes doing
Google searches on a few brand or models of cars
and you will find a host of message boards with
strangers offering advice, support, and connections
all over the globe. Don't get me wrong, I spend a
fair amount of time on message boards as well and
have found some great information there. Still it
seems like something is missing...the human
connection...that is the real reason I am involved
with this incredible club. My involvement like most
of us clearly started with a shared interest in a
particular automobile but I have found the real joy
of participating in this club is meeting all of you and
finding connections far beyond steel, iron, and
rubber. Recently I spent a few evenings with one of our club members and although our conversation started with talking about cars, we ended our visit with topics much more significant and words of encouragement that I needed to hear at the right moment. Having a human connection that is what this club is about.
We have some great opportunities for you to connect with fellow club members in the coming months. Be sure to ink the club events in your calendar for the rest of the year. I look forward to getting the opportunity to see you all soon and make some human connections!

The monthly board meetings are normally scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. The next meeting will be on August 13th at Chris & Katie Pond’s house. If you would like to be a part of the meeting or just want to attend, please give any board member a call and we will make sure there is room for you. All members are always invited and are encouraged to attend the board meetings.

GOLD AWARD I am once again honored to announce that our clubs newsletter has been distinguished as a GOLD Award Winner. Some publicist calls it a Golden Quill Award while others call it a Gold Award. Either way, the honor is
referring to a publication that has achieved the highest standards of excellence. It is due entirely to the membership of our club with your guidance, participation and enduring steadfastness that makes a publication an award winner. That being said, I accept this great achievement on your behalf.
This marks the sixth consecutive year we have been so honored. I want thank each and every one of you, the members of the Thunderbird Circle of Orange County for participating in our clubs activities that makes this award possible. For if it was not for your participation, we would have nothing to write about.

Welcome to a new year and another month in the Sunshine Corner! Congratulations to all who stayed healthy this month. We want to wish all members that are under the weather and/or recovering from surgeries a speedy recovery. June Lipuma who had rotator cup surgery a few months back is doing very well although she still has a few more months’ recovery to go, she says she is doing much better. Joyce Peluso has fully recovered. Richard Helms is well on the road to a full recovery from his knee replacement. He is still using a cane occasionally to get around. We haven’t seen him since the surgery but we hope to see him soon If I have missed anyone, please give me a call and let me know how you are doing or if you have any planned surgeries.

This year our club changed the 4th of July
Parade we attended. It was the 23rd Annual 4th
of July Parade at
Lake Forest. Of
course the parade
was on the 4th of
July. It was a cool
July 4th morning,
a group of nine
dedicated Baby
Birds and Retro
Bird owners met
in the Walgreens
Pharmacy parking lot at the corner of Ridge
Route Dr. & Muirlands Blvd for some
refreshments before heading down to the parade
route in.
By the time we arrived we were put in a corner
near the end of the staging area. We had to
double up to park and still leave enough room for
others to drive into the area. As soon as we
arrived we started to decorate our Thunderbirds
with red, white & blue bunting and streamers.
Every Thunderbird was decorated differently.
The lead vehicle and the trailing vehicle had our
clubs door magnets attached to them. This was
our club’s second time participating in the Lake
Forest 4th of July Parade and it was again a
great experience. The streets were lined the
whole parade route with people cheering as the
Tbirds rolled by. At each of the four judging
stands as we approached they started to play
the appropriate music. Of course it was the
Beach Boys Fun, Fun, Fun. It was amazing to
see so many bystanders singing along.
Thankfully all nine cars made it through the
parade unscathed and with no issues.

Health Tips for August
Get Vaccinated
Immunizations are NOT just for kids! Regardless of your age, we ALL need immunizations to help keep us healthy. Vaccines reduce the risk of infection by working with the body's natural defenses to help it safely develop immunity to disease. Take a few minutes to protect yourself and others from diseases.
Keep track of your and your family’s vaccinations as they're received. Make an appointment with your and your family’s doctor to make sure vaccinations stay up-to-date.
Water Safety
Recreational boating can be a wonderful way to spend time with family and friends. And making safety a priority can ensure that boating stays fun. If you plan to ride in a boat, canoe, or other water vehicle, take a minute to protect yourself and others from drowning.
Put on a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Make sure all passengers put on a life jacket, regardless of distance to be traveled, size of boat, or swimming ability of boaters. Do not use air-filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles, or inner-tubes, in place of life jackets. These toys are not designed to keep swimmers safe. Don’t drink. Alcohol is involved in about a third of all recreational and boating fatalities.
Be Prepared
Taking preparedness actions helps people deal with disasters of all sorts much more effectively when they do occur. If disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to food, water, or electricity for some time. By taking time now to prepare emergency water supplies, food supplies and a disaster supplies kit, you can provide for your entire family. And don't forget to take your pets and service animals into account! Take a few minutes to answer these questions:
Do you have an emergency supply kit that includes water, food, medicines, and first aid items for all members of your family, including pets? Do you have an emergency plan, and do you practice it with your family regularly? Do you know what to expect in an emergency regarding physical damage, coping, and next steps?
From experience here in earthquake county, I know 90% of the population will not be ready for an emergency. So here are a few pointers.
During an earthquake Indoors: Get away from windows & under a desk, sturdy table, stand in the corner or lye on the floor net to a bed or couch. Outdoors: Get to an open area way from trees, poles, building, and wires or off of bridges and squat down. High rise: Get away from windows & under a desk or sturdy table. Do not use elevators, go to the stairwells. Driving: Pullover & stop, avoid bridges, wires or overpasses. A crowed area: Stop squat down cover your head, do not run to an exit.
Make a Disaster Kit (Works well for earthquakes)
Water: Enough so each person has a gallon a day for 72 hours, preferably one week. Store in airtight containers and replace it every six months. Store disinfectants such as iodine tablets or chlorine bleach, eight drops per gallon, to purify water if necessary. Remember you water heater holds 40 gallons or more.
First aid kit: Make sure it's well-stocked with bandages and disinfectants.
Fire extinguisher: Your fire extinguisher should be suitable for all types of fires. Teach all family members how to use it.
Flashlights with extra batteries: Keep flashlights beside your bed and in several other locations. DO NOT use matches or candles after an earthquake unless you are certain there are no gas leaks.

Food: Enough for 72 hours, preferably one week. Commercially canned food will last for 3 years or more. Never eat canned food that the top is bulged out.
Portable radio with extra batteries: Most telephones will be out of order or limited to emergency use. The radio will be your best source of information. Extra blankets, clothing, shoes and money: Make a copy of your driver’s licenses and birth certificates as well. Alternate cooking sources: Store a barbecue or camping stove for outdoor camping. CAUTION: Ensure there are no gas leaks before you use any kind of fire, and do not use charcoal indoors. Special items: Have at least a week's supply of medications and food for infants and those with special needs. Don't forget pet food. Tools: Have an adjustable or pipe wrench for turning off gas and water.
Work Safely Take a few minutes to pay attention to your health and safety at your place of work. Some jobs require extra protection. All jobs can benefit by having a healthier workforce. Put on protective clothing and equipment to protect your eyes, ears, and skin. Take brief rest breaks throughout the day to help lower stress and strain on the eyes and muscles. Eat healthy meals and snacks. Educate yourself about health and safety.

Old Cars Weekly Golden Quill
What it takes to be a Winner By Gerald Perschbacher
For many years, the annual Golden Quill Award has brought recognition to numerous publications in the old car hobby, and continues to be a source of pride for winners. Clubs are honored by the selection. Members are pleased they belong to a “winning” club.
Of course, publications are not the only gauge that an old car club is successful. But the club’s publication often is a barometer of the club itself.
What does it take to be a Golden Quill Award winner? It is to produce a publication that fulfills the following:
- Meets the needs of club members.
- Is consistently high quality in design & content.
- Offers a balance in content (news, features, technical, etc.) - Presents fresh and creative material that advances the hobby of Classic Cars.
- Is a good will ambassador for the club.
“It is important that club publications show growth,” adds Angelo Van Bogart, editor, OCW. “The advances in printing have made quality graphics and color renditions very affordable. Story selection and content is another factor that needs attention, since competition between club publications seems to become stiffer each year. Congratulations to the winners—and if it is not in this list, take heart; maybe YOUR club will be honored in the near future
When your club publication carries its content in an enjoyable, enlightening, positive, and interesting manner, it will truly be a winner for your club—and even an example for others.

Chris reported that he & Ed attended the pre
Fourth of July Parade meeting which was very
informative. There were minor issues with the
church organization that was in the parade in
front of us. They went against the rules & were
passing out bottled water which held us up.
Chris will send a letter to the parade organizers
to let them know of our dissatisfaction. The BBQ
at Ed & Irene’s went very well & a good time was
had by all.
Vice President’s Report: Ed Zaleski:
Ed reported that he went to Julian and the best
time for the club to go would be in spring next
year for 2 nights. More info to follow at a later
date.
Secretary’s Report: Janet Walsh Not Present
A motion was passed that the minutes be
approved as printed from the last meeting. In
Janet’s absents Rita DePaola took the minutes.

There was no income for the past month as
reported by Pete. Pete was presented the bills
for the July newsletter, cancellation fee for the
park and the 4th of July BBQ. The bills were
approved for payment.

Jurenka to see about a date for the annual
Oktoberfest party at their house. Sept. 13th was
suggested to visit the Edward Dean Museum in
Cherry Valley. More info to follow.

After the parade we drove to the Vice-
presidents home for our annual 4th of July Bar-
B-Que. Once we arrived we park diagonally
against the curb to show off our cars.
Then Ed our VP put some of us to work. We
needed to move the Bar-B-Que off the patio
from under to cover to an open area down a
few stairs. Four of us got it move quickly and
we started it. Seems Irene didn’t want us
burning the new awning down. I guess she
remembers last year with president Ponds
cooking and the flames reaching for the sky!
Ed & Irene Zaleski were so kind to open their
home to us again this year. About 25 club
members were in attendance. The club

provided the hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks.
Each family brought something yummy to
share. I think it is fair to say that nobody went
home hungry!

New business:
Chris Pond talked to Ron Hitter regarding the
Lyons car display. We can not get access to that
but we can to Lew Webb’s collection. Chris will
get more information on that and somewhere to
have lunch also. Target date for this is Nov. 8th.
Old business:
Joe LiPuma reported that the picnic that was
scheduled for Sept. to be held at Yorba Regional
Park was cancelled as the date chosen was the
same date as the Pageant of the Thunderbird.
There was a $25.00 cancellation fee which was
approved to be paid to Joe.
Next meeting will be Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the home of Irene and Chris Pond at 7:00 P.M.

to working on new projects. We even
discussed Ed Zaleski’s new decking and what
a great job he did.

We closed out the luncheon with some of our
members providing details on the exciting
upcoming events we have planned for the next
few months. This month on July 26th we
participated in a fund raising car show at South
Bay Lincoln and then we are planning on the
Wounded Worrier Car Show in Long Beach. At
the end of August is the Labor Day Car Show,
August 29th – 30th. Next month in September it
will be time for the Pageant of the
Thunderbirds and several of us will be
attending that one as well. Wow, time sure
does fly when having fun.

1955 & 1956 Air Filter Conversion to a dry element
The following is a variation of the dry filter
installation presented by another of our club members a couple of years ago. In this example all that is required to convert
your oil bath air filter to use a dry element is the purchase of a polished stainless air
cleaner cover (#9600B) available from CASCO and a dry element (NAPA 6161 or
K&N E-1447). The pictured example uses the paper NAPA element.
Simply remove the top portion of the oil bath filter and set aside. Clean the oil from
the lower section making sure it is completely dry and oil free before
proceeding. Drop the dry filter element into the air cleaner housing and place the
polished cover on top. Tighten the wing nut until the cover is firmly against the dry

On 56 air cleaner assemblies the filter will
not immediately set down over the section that is humped up to clear the choke
assembly, but don’t worry. When you tighten the wing nut on the cover, the dry
element crushes down enough to mold around the hump and still seal. An
example of a 1956 air cleaner with the dry element installed is shown below.
The installation maintains a stock
appearance while allowing the advantages of higher performance with a dry element
air filter. If the filters I mentioned are not your preferred brand, ask for a filter element that fits a 1985 Buick or
Oldsmobile with a V-6 and a two barrel carburetor. The filter dimensions are H =
2.125 inches, ID = 9.8 inches and OD = 12 inches.
