Chapter 91 has some outstanding
members. Last year, Jeanné Willerth
was recognized as the FAA’s FAAST
Team member of the year and now
Chris Hope will earn that title on August
23rd in the FAA pavilion at AirVenture.
Larry’s monthly article tells all about
how Jack Gress gained the attention of
the headquarters staff and will likewise
receive some well-earned recognition.
Hanging around with people like
Jeanné, Chris and Jack only makes us
better . . . or is it the other way around?

Today, June 29, 2015, the M.A.C. Corporation, owned by chapter member
Robert Andrew, began construction of our fourth hangar! It was a long time coming,
but we finally got the blessings of the FAA and the city of Lee's Summit and
construction is underway. We will soon have more room for chapter member
airplanes.
EAA has a new award called the Volunteer of the Year. This is the second year
for this award which was presented the first year to current EAA President Jack
Pelton. This year it will be awarded to another Jack and this Jack is our own Jack
Gress. We are indeed very lucky to have Jack as a member of Chapter 91. His
enthusiasm and cheerfulness add to the success and pleasure of our activities. Jack is
a person we can count on to always be there with the pancakes and donuts. He has
been flipping pancakes for at least the last 15 years and has been our hospitality
chairman, bringing donuts to our monthly meetings, for about the same length of time.
Chapter 91 has built three aircraft hangars and a meeting room and Jack was there
working from the beginning to the finish on all of them. Jack has been a volunteer at
Homebuilder's Headquarters at both AirVenture in Oshkosh and Sun 'N Fun in Florida
for as long as I can remember. He always arrives at least a week early to get
everything ready and stays after the event to put everything away for the winter
months. On top of all that he is simply a really good guy. I cannot think of anyone
more deserving of this award. To learn the location of Jack's volunteer brick, ask at
Homebuilder's Headquarters in Oshkosh.
I hope you all know by now we will not have our regular meeting in July as a
good many of us will be in at AirVenture in Oshkosh. Chapter 91 will have our
annual get together dinner at Robbins Restaurant, Wednesday, July 22 again this year.
Reservations are a must, so let Pam know how many of you will be there. Yes, family
and friends are welcome, so I'll see you there!

EAA CHAPTER 91
MINUTES OF THE MEETING
June 15, 2015
The meeting of EAA Chapter 91 was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by president, Larry Young in the
chapter meeting room at Lee's Summit Airport. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by Jack
Gress. Larry welcomed visitors and guests including Don Halbert, Don and Tilly Mueller, Mike
Koop, Jerry Hedrick, and Dan Newman. Larry gave a special welcome to member Phil Hedrick and
thanked him for his generosity toward the chapter.
The minutes of the May 18, 2015 meeting were approved as printed in the June newsletter. Pam pro-
vided the balance on hand in the checking account. Pam said chapter name badges could be ordered
as well as chapter caps and patches were available along with polo shirts could be ordered to size.
The next board meeting was scheduled for July 6, 7 P.M. Otherwise all chapter activities, including
the breakfast and Young Eagles and the chapter meeting had been canceled for July because Air-
Venture dates had been changed and conflicted with the chapter's planned events. The next chapter
meeting would be August 17 and the speaker would be Don Halbert with the FAA on “Phase 1 Re-
visited: The Honeymoon is Over.”
Larry explained the demise of the meeting room air conditioner and furnace. A new system had been
purchased and installed thanks to the diligent assistance of member Mike McKinzey. Pat Lorie had
recently made a donation toward the cost of the unit.
Larry said Saturday, June 20 would be the Lee's Summit Airport Open House in addition to the chap-
ter's regular breakfast and Young Eagles. Additional volunteers would be needed to help with parking
cars and directing aircraft after 8 A.M. Larry said it was possible KC Flight would fly sometime be-
tween 12:30 and 1 P.M. which should not interfere with the Young Eagles flights. He also said the
city was planning to require a one-time waiver for each Young Eagle. This would be in addition to
the usual EAA application.
Robert Andrew, chapter member and contractor for the planned Hangar M, was present and explained
the building permit from the city was to be ready June 16. He had equipment in Ottawa which he
planned to move to LXT and, weather permitting, begin construction soon. He expected the building
to be complete in about 60 good weather days.
Young Eagles Coordinator Chris St. Germain said he had recently worked with a group of youth par-
ticipating in the STEM Program. He expected some of them to participate Saturday, June 20 as
Young Eagles. Pam said the chapter had been asked to handle a novelty booth during the Aviation
Expo at Downtown Airport which met with some agreement. Several signed up to help.
Nancy Inderwiesen still had 2 microwaves available. John Clayton said his Bonanza was for sale.
Fred Hulen volunteered to clean and set up the meeting room for the August meeting. Nancy Inder-
wiesen and Mike Dooley would again plan to mow June through August. After the break, the winner
of the 50-50 drawing, Bill Hayden, donated the proceeds to the Young Eagles fund. The program,
“Flying the B-2: 101” was presented by member Nate Mueller.
The meeting adjourned 8:50 P.M.

JUNE’S PROGRAM: THE B-1 BOMBER
June’s program featured U S Air Force Captain and Chapter 91 member Nate Mueller, an aircraft commander on the B-2. He started with a history of tailless airplanes including the Northrop N-1M, the N-9M, the YB-35 with its 172 foot wingspan which the B-2 shares, and the jet-powered version, the YB-49. The B-2 isn’t as fast as the workhorse B-52, but has superior capabilities with just a two-man crew. With much of the B-2’s capabilities obviously classified, Nate gave as much information as he could. He said the crews fly practice missions in the Truman MOA including instrument procedures and aerial refueling. But rather than shooting endless touch and goes in the $2.2 billion aircraft, he sharpens his skills in the more economical T-38 Talon. Nate attended the University of North Dakota’s vaunted aviation program with aspirations of flying for the airlines. But his ROTC involvement took him to the Air Force where he logged some 800 hours in B-52s. Then he applied for and was accepted into the B-2 program which is what brought him and his wife Leah to Whiteman AFB. The program was fascinating and we’re lucky to have guys like Nate Mueller standing guard for our country. Thanks, Nate! And just let us know when we can go for a ride!

REMEMBER, JULY’S SCHEDULE HAS CHANGED
Last month we mentioned that thanks to EAA’s new 2015’s
schedule for AirVenture, Chapter 91’s usual activities had to
change. Many members will be at Oshkosh and those new dates
mean major conflicts back home. So we’ve decided to cancel
July’s regular Young Eagles rally and breakfast as well as July’s
chapter meeting. Yes, this is unprecedented, but it’s probably for
the best. We know someone won’t hear the message so please
help get the word out about July’s activities being scratched.
We’ll try to send special e-mail messages at appropriate times so
this isn’t the last time you’ll hear about it. August will be a bit
different, too, but we’ll tell you more later.
AUGUST’S PROGRAM
Since Chapter 91’s actual mission is to promote and support the
building and flying of amateur-built aircraft, our next program will
cover an important aspect of that process. Upon receiving the
FAA’s conditional blessing to fly, the new aircraft needs to prove
it’s up to the job on a more permanent basis. Flying off the
required number of hours, exploring the performance envelope
and essentially ensuring the aircraft is indeed airworthy is known
as Phase I. Our next program, presented by the FAA’s Don
Halbert, is entitled, “Phase I Revisited: The Honeymoon is Over.”
Remember, since there is no July meeting, this will be presented
at our August gathering on Monday, August 17th. I don’t know
about you, but I can’t wait!
AUGUST’S EVENTS
Page 7
The summer of 2015 is stacking up as one of our most unusual
and interesting ones on record. Consecutive rain delays at Young
Eagles’ events, cancelling the July membership meeting and
regular Young Eagles breakfast and rally because of AirVenture’s
date changes, and finally, a different setup for Young Eagles and
our monthly breakfast in August. Oh! And the Aviation Expo at
MKC, too! In fact, two of ‘em! With the changes, here’s how it’s
starting to shape up. Sure, it’s okay to take notes.
Saturday, August 8th is Kids’ Day at Downtown Airport, MKC. It is
a part of the Aviation Expo but is expressly dedicated to the
young folks and that’s when we’ll loft our next batch of Young
Eagles into the sky. However, we will hold our LXT breakfast as
usual on Saturday, August 15th but won’t plan to fly any kids at
that time since we will have done that on the 8th.
Then Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, we will participate
in the KC Aviation Expo airshow also at MKC. That’s when the
Blue Angels will fly. Members who volunteered to sell Blue
Angels’ memorabilia at the show will be pleased to know they’ll
now be manning two beer concessions instead. You gotta be 21
and who knows, may need parental consent!
So August’s schedule of activities and events will be a bit different
from what we’re used to. But it all sounds like fun, and we hope
you can participate in at least some of them. September will
return to business as usual, so don’t let the confusion get to you.
