  1. 1. Choosing Your Species of Birds By Fantastic Furries
  2. 2. Zebra Finch The zebra finch is the most common finch of Central Australia and ranges over most of the continent, but isn`t found in only the cool moist south and some areas of the tropical far north. It can also be found natively in Indonesia and East Timor. The bird has been introduced to Puerto Rico, Portugal, Brazil and the United States. Zebra finches are the more common species of domesticated finch and are almost always sold in local pet shops. They are very easy to take care of and are quite inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance finch.
  3. 3. Budgerigars The budgerigar is a common pet parakeet and is known as the budgie, it is a small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrot. Budgerigars are found wild throughout the drier parts of Australia where the species has survived harsh inland conditions for the last five million years. Budgerigars are naturally green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings, but have been bred in captivity with colouring in blues, whites, yellows, greys, and even with small crests. The species was first recorded in 1805, and today is the third most popular pet in the world, after the domesticated dog and cat. Budgies are the more common species of domesticated birds and are normally sold in local pets hops. They are relatively easy to take care of and are inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance pet.
  4. 4. Bengalese / Society Finch The society finch (North America) or Bengalese finch (elsewhere), is a popular cage bird not found in the wild. It is a member of the estrildid finch family. A DNA study found that it was more closely related to the white- rumped munia than either bird is to the zebra finch, the chestnut- breasted munia, or the "Silver Bill" (presumably the Indian silverbill), indicating that it originated from the white-rumped. Society finches are almost always in petshops and are the more common species of domesticated finch. They are relatively easy to take care of and are very inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance pet.
  5. 5. Double Barred Finch The double-barred finch is an estrildid finch found in dry savannah, tropical (lowland) dry grassland and shrubland habitats in northern and eastern Australia. They are sometimes referred to as Bicheno's finch; and also as owl finch, owing to the dark ring of feathers around their faces. Double Barred Finches are the more uncommon species of finch and are not normally sold in local pet shops. They are relatively easy to take care of and are quite inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance pet.
  6. 6. Gouldian Finch The Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae), also known as the Lady Gouldian finch, Gould's finch or the rainbow finch, is a colourful passerine bird only in Australia. Gouldian finches are the more hard to find species of domesticated finch and are not regularly sold in local pet shops. They are relatively easy to take care of and are quite cheap to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance bird.
  7. 7. Canary The domestic canary, often simply known as the canary, is a domesticated form of the wild canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands).Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century. They were brought over by Spanish sailors to Europe. This bird became expensive and fashionable to breeding in courts of Spanish and English kings. Monks started breeding them and only sold the males (which sing). This kept the birds in short supply and drove the price up. Eventually Italians obtained hens and were able to breed the birds themselves. This made them very popular and resulted in many breeds arising and the birds being bred all over Europe. Canaries are the more common species of domesticated finch and are almost always sold in local pet shops. They are quite easy to take care of and are quite inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance finch.
  8. 8. Star Finch The star finch (Neochmia ruficauda) is a species of estrildid finch found in Australia. It inhabits dry grassland and dry savannah habitats. Starfinches are the more uncommon species of domesticated finch and are not regularly sold in local pet shops. They are relatively easy to take care of and are quite inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance pet the same as most small pet birds.
  9. 9. Strawberry Finch The red avadavat, red munia or strawberry finch (Amandava amandava) is a sparrow-sized bird of the Estrildidae family. It is found in the open fields and grasslands of tropical Asia and is popular as a cage bird due to the colourful plumage of the males in their breeding season. It breeds in the Indian Subcontinent in the monsoon season. Strawberry finches are the more uncommon species of domesticated finch and are not normally sold in local pet shops. They are relatively easy to take care of and are quite inexpensive to keep so they would make a great pet for someone who needs a low maintenance pet.
