Specific WeldingHazardsSafety hazards from welding, cutting, and brazing operations can include burns, eye damage, electricalshock, hearing loss, respiratory problems and more.

• Fumes and Gases – Most welding, cutting and brazing operations produce fumes and gases whichcan be harmful to your health

• Radiation – The infrared light that is created duringwelding requires mandatory eye and skin protection

• Noise – Air carbon arc cutting and plasma arc cuttingare examples of processes which are frequently noisy. It’s a good ides to test the noise levels in your workplace.

• Electrical Hazards – Electrical shock from weldingand cutting equipment can result in death or severe burns

• Chromium and Nickel in Welding Fumes – Thefumes from certain welding processes may includethese dangerous components and additional precautions may be needed

Choosing the Right ProtectiveEquipment When WeldingMany of the health hazards from welding, cutting, andbrazing operations can be controlled with proper workpractices and personal protective equipment.

Welding Helmets

• A progressively darker lens shade number isrequired based on the intensity of theinfrared light exposure

• If you are always using the same arc weldingprocess on the same material, a fixed shadedwelding lens is sufficient. But if you are using avariety of materials and welding a number of dif-ferent applications, your best bet is an auto-darkeningshade, which will adjust to the correct darkness for your particular process.

Gloves

• Arc welding gloves are padded and made from various grades of leather to provide both heat, spark and abrasion protection

• MIG/TIG welding gloves have no padded liner for heat, but focus on giving the worker excellent dexteritywhile welding

Clothing

• In most welding applications, it is critical to have allexposed skin covered during the welding exposureto prevent burns to the skin

• Leather aprons and sleeves provide excellent durability during all welding activities

• Flame-resistant coveralls offer the best protectionfor your body and prevent street clothes from beingdamaged

Respirators

• Welding fumescan be extremely dan-gerous to breath withoutgood ventilation orproper respiratoryprotection• We offer disposable respiratorsthat are made specifically for welding applications.Common feature of a welding respirator include: a flame-retardant shell, charcoal additive for odors,

Classic Welding HelmetThe Tigerhood Classic is the workhorse of thermoplastic helmets.Unique design provides extended throat protection while blockingfumes and smoke from the face. Size and shape allows air to circulate, to help clear any smoke and fumes that seep in. Air circulation also evaporates perspiration in the perforated sweatbandfor a cooling effect. Smooth, seamless shell deflects sparks and spatter reducing the risk of burn through. Ratchet headgear offersmultiple wearing adjustments to comfortably accommodate eyewearand respirators. Helmet features a shade 10 filter.

PAPR Welding

Adflo™ Welding PAPR3M™ Adflo™ Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is acompact and lightweight system for welders. The high-efficiency particulate filter can be “stacked” onto an optionalOrganic Vapor/Acid Gas Cartridge for additional protectionagainst organic vapors and acid gases. The slim profile isdesigned to go into tight spaces. NiMH battery charges inless than 3 hours with a smart charger that won’t ever over-charge. Audible and visual alarms signal low airflow and lowbattery charge. Turbo filter cover holds spark arrestor, prefilter and high-efficiency particulate filter.

3M™ Speedglas™ 9000XF Helmet features four aerodynamicexhaust vents that help to remove exhaled air. Welders experience lower humidity, less heat and reduced stuffiness. The 9000XF has an extra-large 4.09" X 2.12" viewing area and outstanding optical clarity. The fixed shade filter isfactory-set to shade 10.

With user-selectable dark shades from 9 – 13, the 3M™ Speedglas™ 9002X FlexViewHelmet is ideal for welders who use a variety of arc welding processes and amperages. This model has clear, sharp optics and consistent shading across its entire 4.09" X 2.12"viewing area. The FlexView system allows the spring-mounted filter to be lifted up whenuser is not actively welding, allowing the user to see out of the clear faceshield. Side win-dows increase peripheral vision by 100%. A solar panel on front of the filter cassette helpspower the unit, extending battery life to approximately 3,000 hours. Unit’s detectors haveincreased sensitivity to provide reliable switching for a wide range of welding methods, even extremely stable arcs like those from TIG inverters at low amp settings. Helmet has anew delay that allow the user to select how quickly the filter changes from dark-to-light.

Welding Approved RespiratorsThe use of N-Series Respirators is typically limited only by hygiene, damage and increased breathing resistance. However, when workingin very dirty or dusty workplaces that may result in high filter loading(200 mg), service time should be limited to 8 hours of continuous orintermittent use, unless an evaluation is done to prove that extendeduse will not significantly degrade efficiency levels.

The use of P-Series Respirators is limited only by hygiene, damageand increased breathing resistance.

Welding Approved Respirators offer unique protective layers that aredesigned to be flame-resistant as demonstrated per ASTM D2859-96. When choosing a Welding Approved Respirator, consider thefollowing features:

• 3M™ Cool Flow™ Exhalation Valve – A patented one-way valvefor easy exhalation and cool, dry comfort.

• M-Noseclip – Adjusts easily for fewer pressure points.

• Faceseal – Soft and secure, conforms closely to face for long-lasting comfort and protection.

• Fully Adjustable Straps – A single tug helps provide a secure fit.

• Advanced Electret Media – Advanced electrostatically-chargedmicrofibers make breathing easier and cooler.

• Odor-Removing Filter Material – Carbon layers remove manynuisance level odors. Models labeled OV filter Organic Vapors, while models labeled AG filter Acid Gases.
