Education Week 2010 - ‘NSW Public Schools Leading the Way, Learning for Sustainability.’ I look forward to seeing our families at our school throughout this week as we celebrate Education Week. Mrs Vaughan has worked with the staff to coordinate the OPEN DAY activities. I anticipate we will have many families represented on Friday when families come together to be part of our Open Day and Mr Twyman has once again organised a Scholastic Book Fair with the theme ‘Read Around the World’. School! Thank you to all of our staff and helpers involved in the organisation of HEADSTART. K-2 New Playground Equipment Thanks to a BIG effort last Saturday our playground area is now ready to have the new playground equipment installed, hopefully this week. Unfortunately three concrete footings from the previous equipment needed to be removed prior to the new equipment being installed. With P&C President, Mark Deuxberry working up a sweat on the jackhammer and assistance from Dave Moyle , Joel and Ryan Deuxberry this task was finally completed. This project is jointly funded by our P&C and the school. The P&C are using last year’s fete proceeds for their funding contribution. Thank you Mark, Dave, Joel and Ryan for volunteering your time. At the time of publication the equipment has arrived and is ready to be installed. I am extremely grateful that at extremely short notice three dads: John Martin, Dave Moyle and Mark Harrison plus our General As-sistant, Terry Waters were able to come up to the school and assist the installers level the site by removing the top layer of mulch to enable installation to commence...and in rainy conditions. Very much appreciated fellas!

We hope that you can attend this year’s Trivia Night on Saturday August 14th to help rebuild the P&C’s coffers and assist them to assist our students.

NAIDOC Celebrations As you can see by Mrs Vaughan’s photographs, the students who attended last week’s NAIDOC Celebra-tions at Erina High School certainly gained an appreciation of our Indigenous culture. It was also a great op-portunity for our students to familiarise themselves with their local high school, their staff and the students. The hospitality was excellent with all students enjoying a BBQ lunch. Thank you to Mrs Vaughan (a big day signing and supervising our students); Nada and Lisa Seaman for their organisation, Mrs Denning and par-ents for providing transport for students to and from the venue. Choir Rehearsal Last Friday students in the primary choir travelled to Sydney for their final rehearsal prior to performing at the Sydney Opera House as part of the annual DET Festival of Choral Music on August 27th. Our choir was selected for this prestigious event after sending in an audition video recording late last year. Their singing will no doubt be appreciated by all who attend our Education Week Open Day this Friday. They are brilliant! Thank you to Suzie Matheson for sharing her expertise on a weekly basis and Miss Wiseman for her enthu-siastic coordination of this program. I also thank Mrs Blumer for assisting with supervision last Friday and her ongoing support of the choir. I have heard directly from several people who travelled in the same carriage as the Chertsey students that their behaviour was nothing short of OUTSTANDING! It makes me very proud to receive these reports from members of the public. CONGRATULATIONS students and staff!

Parent Project Officer Mrs Lisa Seaman will be relieving in Mrs Moore’s position of Parent Project Officer at Chertsey for the remainder of this term. Lisa is a parent of children who attend Chertsey PS and has recently completed a work placement at SaCCs when completing her Welfare Diploma. She has been instrumental in the Commu-nity Newsletter and Indigenous projects and I have no doubt will be able to successfully carry on the great programs initiated by Mrs Moore. Welcome Lisa!

Athletics Carnival Yesterday we held our annual Athletics Carnival at Mingara. Initially, the day started off beautifully sunny (but a little windy). Due to the conditions of the ground we were unable to use grassed areas for seating or novelties and so the students sat on the track after the 800m races had run. Once the infants joined us at 10:30am, the weather had unfortunately taken a turn for the worse. We were all freezing but still our stu-dents behaved as expected and competed in their events without complaint. Thankfully the sun eventually shone through again and we enjoyed the rest of the day. I would like to thank those wonderful parents who volunteered their time to help with long jump, timekeep-ing, judging, novelties and running the BBQ. Without your continued generous support, it would be diffi-cult to run these carnivals. I would also like to thank the staff for their help on the day, and congratulate the students on their excellent behaviour in such difficult circumstances. Well done! On Thursday 26th and Friday 27th August (Week 6), the Brisbane Water Zone Athletics Carnival will be held at Mingara. Once the team is finalised (by the end of next week), notes will be sent home to district representatives. Please remind your child that though they may have placed in a race, heats are run as TIMED FINALS and only the fastest three students in each age group for each event will be awarded rib-bons. School carnival ribbons will be handed out later this term, once our field events have been com-pleted. Miss Wiseman Choir 2010 Last Friday, the choir travelled to Sydney by train for their preliminary rehearsal for the upcoming Festival of Choral Music. They had an early start as they had to meet me at Gosford Station 6:30am sharp! Our students were absolutely fantastic on a train that was packed with commuters. In fact, a member of the public spoke to me as we alighted at Town Hall. She commented on their outstanding behaviour, and said the students were a credit to their school. As a teacher, there is no higher praise than this – Congratulations Choir! We practised the festival songs with several other schools from around the state. Not only were we able to hone our singing skills, but it also allowed us to get a sense of how the performance will sound with a com-bined choir. Our return train trip was uneventful (and less packed!) and we arrived back at Gosford at 3:30pm. This week the Choir will be performing two festival songs at the Open Day Assembly and we invite all parents to attend. Miss Wiseman and Mrs Blumer Stage 3 Myuna Bay Excursion ***IMPORTANT*** This is just a reminder that Stage 3 students will attend a three day sport and recreation camp at Myuna Bay in Week 5 of this term. At this time, few students have paid in full. All payments must be finalised by Monday 9th August (Week 4) so that final preparations can be made. A parent information session will be held early in Week 4 to discuss the camp including what to take, spending money and banned items. De-tailed notes regarding this information will be handed out, and these will also be sent home with students whose parents are unable to attend.
