Choking happens when a person cannot breathe properly because an object sticking at the back of throat may either block the throat or cause a spasm

Sign and symptomsDifficulty in speaking and breathingCyanosis (bluish color) of face, lips or tongueCasualty points to throat or grasps neckUnconsciousness

FIRST AID
Reassure the casualtyGive 5 sharp blows to his back between shoulder blades with flat of your hand

5 Back Slaps

5 Abdominal ThrustIf it fails, try 4 to 5 abdominal thrusts If it fails, casualty may become unconscious

FOR A CHILDPlace the child over your knee, head down, slap between shoulder bladesIf it fails, give 5 chest thrustsIf this fails, use abdominal thrusts only if you are trained to do so on a child. Otherwise begin resuscitation

Lay the baby along your forearm, slap him between shoulder blades using less force than for a child and supporting the babys chin
Do not use chest thrust or abdominal thrust in babies
