Montessori Schools offer many advantages over the Traditional SchoolEnvironment:
What is Montessori and where did Montessori come from?
Montessori is a philosophy of education and teaching method that was founded in 1907 by Dr.Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educationalmethods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery thatchildren teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which childrencould freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Montessorieducation is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.
What makes the Montessori Classroom Special?
Each child learns at their own pace without rigid expectations and without limits to theirprogress. The children in the classroom display respect, manners and social skills. There is
an abundance of learning materials in the classroom that teach children concepts that arebuilding blocks for what they will be learning in the future
Montessori focuses on teaching for understanding. There are many instances wherechildren are taught to memorize correct answers or methods of arriving at the correctanswer but don’t truly understand the concept. Montessori creates a concrete sensorialexperience that gradually allows the child to form a mental picture of concepts like: How bigis a thousand? How many hundreds make a thousand? What is really going on when weborrow or carry numbers in a mathematical equation?

What is in a Montessori classroom? A Montessori classroom is a child-sized world. Theoutside world is incorporated meaningfully into theclassroom. The teacher carefully selects material so thata child can explore life on a level he can understand.Materials and curriculum center around practical life, sensorial, language, math, geography, history, science, art, music, and drama. The teacher and other adults in aMontessori environment serve as role models. Theirmovements are slow and graceful. They speak withinside voices and act with dignity and courtesy. Theyfollow all the ground rules that the children must follow. Ifthey use something, they put it away in an orderlymanner. They clean up after themselves. Theycommunicate positively.
How do children interact in the environment?
As the children develop their sense of pride intheir "work”, a feeling of confidence, well beingand joy begins to manifest itself. A classroom ofMontessori children is a pleasure to watch. Thereseems to be a spirit of respect, love andcooperation among the children that is not foundtoo often elsewhere.
What is the role of the Montessori teacher?
The Montessori teacher carefully plans theenvironment in the interest of the children, facilitates the classroom activity and helps thechildren progress from one activity to the next. She is trained to work with each child individually,
allowing him or her to choose from many activitieswithin his/her range of ability. She stands backwhile a child is working and allows him to thesatisfaction of his own discovery.

What about socialization and group work?
Socialization is very much a part of the Montessori Method. In the classroom you will noticechildren interacting continuously, choosing to work on projects together, and older childrenhelping younger ones. Each day there is some group activity and play outside.
Does Montessori employ current research in their educational methods?
Montessori is not a closed door or static system of education. While there are certain materialsand methods that have been proven effective through the years, Montessori is as much anattitude about education and the children as it is a specific method. We do incorporate newmaterial all the time, if we see they can be used in a Montessori approach.
