Chloride Power Systems and Solutions Limited, a 100% subsidiary of Exide Industries Limited, offers complete DC Power Solutions for industrial customers. Established in 1980, it is a leading name in the field of power electronics in India. Its state-of-the-art facility at Salt Lake Electronics Complex, Kolkata manufactures a wide range of Battery Chargers and other DC controlling equipment. Chloride also exports its products to overseas countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, UAE , Africa and to South and South East Asia. As a part of its policy of continuous innovation, Chloride has developed Formation Chargers for formation (charging and discharging) of new batteries.

Formation ChargerFormation process, be it Jar Formation or Tank Formation, plays an extremely critical role in battery manufacturing. Any departure from the targeted charge-discharge schedule may have a very serious effect on the quality of the end product despite having an excellent design and perfect ingredients. Besides maintaining accuracy and integrity, the Formation Charger has to be therefore very robust and reliable as well. Modern battery manufacturing facility also demands it to be a very user-friendly and flexible product to accommodate varying needs in a factory. Zero or minimal downtime and easy maintainability are other two very important criteria of a good Formation Charger.

With its 4-decade long experience in design and manufacture of high capacity rectifiers/chargers for critical sectors like large Thermal Power Plants, Hydel Power Plants, Nuclear Power Plants, Transmission and Distribution Substations and a very wide range of industries in India and abroad, Chloride now offers Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) Formation Chargers. Besides its own rich expertise and exposure in power electronics industry, Chloride has collected inputs from the R&D Centre and seven battery manufacturing units of its principal company, M/S Exide Industries Limited, to design and manufacture a product range which addresses all the major concerns.

Indigenously developed Microcontroller, Firing Card, Power Circuit and PCBs provide flexibility to meet customer specific needs. The intelligently designed common firing cards and microcontroller cards for different ratings of formation chargers enable easy replaceability and allow lower inventory maintenance of spares. The chargers are designed to take special protection against fuse burn at the time of power failure during discharging to ensure zero or minimal disruption. The chargers are also provided with additional features like Jump in time, Jump in step and jump in cycle operation. Intelligent PC software enables group operation (program load/run/stop) of multiple circuits.

The operation of the system is fully automatic and controlled through microcontroller circuit which also communicates with the PC software user interface. Chloride’s in-house developed PC software facilitates the use of common PC interface for both PLC and Microcontroller based formation chargers.

Controller Card: The controller cards control the power conversion of the system during charging and discharging. It receives feedback from the system and performs all the required adjustment automatically to deliver desired output from the system.

Micro- Controller Card: This card is like the brain of the system. It receives all the inputs from the operator through operating software, senses all the feedback signals and generates controlling signals to control the systems. It also generates the alarm signal in case of any problem.

Rectifier Circuit: This is the main component that performs the power conversion. It is a SCR Bridge assembly, which rectifies the 3-phase supply into desired level of DC output depending upon the control signal received from the Controller Card.

Application:

The main application area of these systems are formation of the new batteries i.e. charging and discharging of the new batteries as per formation schedule. The life, capacity utilization and performance of the batteries depend on charging and discharging during formation stage.

Main Transformer: Specially designed transformer provides the required galvanic isolation in between primary and all secondary windings. Smart design ensures minimum loss during the idle condition of chargers or when all channels are working at a full capacity. The transformer design also enables the charger to feedback the power to the grid during discharge operation.
