    her birthday!

Hello fellow CCRC residents! We have been through high and

low temperatures, and now we come to the season of the year when we mostly

think of images of fall leaves changing into beautiful colors. But despite this

    pandemic, we go on….

So this month I am going to tell you a true story about a man who was born

in 1774 on September 26th. His name was John Chapman. He became an

American pioneer as a nurseryman who started apple orchards by planting apple

seeds that became trees. As he went along his way, he continued to plant more

orchards in the largest parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, as well

many other states such as present-day West Virginia.

Chapman became a legend while he was still alive. He was known for his

kindness and generosity. His name was John Chapman at birth, but he is most

kindly remembered as Johnny Appleseed. So inasmuch as Fall is usually a

season represented by apples, just think of Old Johnny to bring a smile to your

    face.

See you in November! ....Written by Karen Wiley Bay Lane

Johnny Appleseed Fun Facts ~ John Chapman not only planted apple trees, but also medicinal plants. This allowed him to have a good relationship with Native Americans he crossed paths with. ~ The apples that were planted were not for eating, but more for hard cider and a type of brandy called Applejack. ~ He loved animals and respected nature greatly. ~ He became a vegetarian. ~ He was a missionary for The New Church.

Recently many residents received personalized letters from our volunteer Lynne Galloro. Each one included pictures and a note tailored to the resident’s interests.

Attention Staff Members! Many of us enjoy having pets in our

homes and treat them more like a member of the family than a pet. They

greet us at the door when we come home and cheer us up when we are sad. So

wouldn’t it be nice to show a picture of your beloved furry, feathered, or scaled friend to share with the residents on a virtual pet visit?!

In an effort to find ways to enhance the residents’ lives while under quarantine, Janet McDonald has suggested staff share a picture and short caption of

their pet doing silly things or just being their beautiful selves. Please make your

caption no more than 100 characters. We want to have enough room in the

November Chit Chat for everyone who sends a picture. Please send your

    pictures to [email protected].

...to the Guild Gift Shop for donating prizes for the horse racing activity. ...to the Guild Volunteer Auxiliary for donating to the Bingo program.

The Wind and the Leaves by George Cooper

“Come, little leaves," said the wind one day.

“Come o'er the meadows with me, and play

Put on your dress of red

and gold, Summer is gone, and the days grow

    cold."

Soon as the leaves heard the wind's

    loud call, Down they came

    fluttering, one and all;

Over the brown fields they danced and flew,

Singing the soft little songs they knew.
