AWARENESS

FIGHTING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

It afflicts about 60 million of us. It is a major cause of stroke. Called hypertension by doctors and with the cause unknown , risk factors include family history, salt intake, obesity, smoking and stress. The good news is that in the past 10 years, the number of sufferers who have the disease under control has risen from 16 perent to 34 percent while deaths from strokes have dropped 43 percent. Because there are no symptoms , pressure should be checked regu larly . As air is released from the cuff and the blood begins to flow, he listens through a stethoscope to the blood pushing through the artery. Watching the gauge on the cuff, he records two factors , the pressure of blood flow when the heart beats (systolic

pressure) and the pressure of the flow between beats (diastolic pressure). The systolic pressure will be higher than the diastolic. ALWAYS ON THE JOB It your job involves a steady regimen of lifting, stooping , bending , sitting or standing, you can be a victim of a work related spinal injury. Early detection and chiropractic treatment can not only get you back on the job faster but can prevent complications and minimize suffering as well. In fact , most insurance plans will reimburse you for chiropractic care. Over 75 million of us will ha ve back related problems this year and the productive man-hours missed will amou nt to millions upon millions of dollars . Whether you spend your work-

A POUND OF 'AUTO PREVENTION'

ON CHILD RESTRAINTS & WHIPLASH About 15 perc ent of serious traffic injuries to children under the age of fourteen occur without a crash. Often the child simply craw ls out the window of a mov ing car . In other cases, the car suddenly stopped, swerved , accelerated , or turned . Nearly half of non -crash

qr ~

injuries com e about as a resu lt of the child's being thrown out of the car. The rest result from a collision against something inside the car. Children need to be protected by a restraint system, especially in the age group under four. We adults need 'a utoprevention' as well, and since sea tbe lts can't do the whole job , whiplash can result. During an accident, much of the body's motion occurs in the spine. Your neck vertabrae can eas ily fall out

of alignment from such a rapid force . This much force can propel the neck violently forward and then backward. Don't forget that the result of such a tremendous impact , if left untreated, can be more than just whiplash and lower back injuries. We in chiroprac tic hav e a long history of success in dealing with a whiplash injury and its long-t erm ramifications.

At least 20 major corporations pay whole or part membership to local YrvfCAs wnich -havetneir own pools. Aerobic exercise has been adapted for water. Synchronized swimming will be a competitive sport in the 1984 Olympics for the first time . Arthritics report nearmiraculous recovery with the Y's "Ache Away" programs conducted in shallow but well-heated pools. At a recent swim meet sponsored by the 15 ,000-member U.S. Masters Swimming organizatio n, one-fourth of the contes tants were over the age of 60! What does this all mea n? Simply that th e drudgery of jogging as well as the popularity of health clubs and general fitness ce nters have made swimming the commondenominator sport in the U.S. If you hav e access to a coordinated swimming/ exercising program, you might find it a 'sw immingly good' addition to your fitness routine.

T-CELLS

FIGHTING INFECTIONS NATURALLY Exercising and taking vitamins C and E boost the body 's ability to fight infectio ns . Three researchers reported in the current Prevention magazine that people who exercise regularly or sedentary people who take vitamins daily have a higher number of T-cells (infection fighters) in their blood . In addition, the body's immune system improves significantly when exercise is combined with taking vitamins. In the stud , the healthiest group jogged_ o_r _ _ performed calisthenics for 1 ½ hours three times a week and took 400 milligrams of vitamin E and 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily for 60 days. We in chiropractic have been trained to treat our patients without the aid of medicines or other substances which can potentially damage our own ability to maintain he a lth naturally. The importance of exercise, food supplementation and vitamins is paramount in our method of caring for you and your family.

UNHEALTHY GUMS

A CALCIUM DEFICIENCY A Columbia University researcher believes the real cause of gum disease may not be plaque but calcium deficiency and excess phosphorus . Dr. David Ostreicher, a research orthodontist and nutritionist , analyzed eating habits among various populations and found a link between low calcium intake and periodontal disease . The typical American diet is low in calcium and high in phosphorus. To reduce the risk of gum disease, Ostreicher suggests drinking one quart of skim milk and eat ing on ly one red meat daily, limiting intake of colas , and eating dark-green, leafy vegetab les.

CHIROPRACTIC - NOTHING NEW ---. · Way back in 1895 , Dr. D. D. Palmer helped cure a man of deafness by adjusting a · bump on his spine back to its normal position . Since those days, chiropractic has

come a long , long way. Sophisticated equipment helps us make adjusting more comfortable. Medical research has shown chiropractic to be the safest of all the healing sciences. In today 's world, doctors of chiropractic must complete a very demanding four-year curriculum and by the time they graduate, their knowledge of bacteriology, toxico logy, pathology , anatomy, chemistry, physiology , diag nosis and x-ray involve as many hours of government-approved classes as any doctors

graduating from medical school. In addition, a doctor of chiropractic has also spent four full years study ing the spine , joint relationships and adjustive procedures . Among athletic teams, chiropractors are found to get players off the injured list quickly and keep them up to peak performance . In the workp lace , employ ers have found chiropractic capable of getting workers back to their jobs faster and less expensively than other methods of treatment. Yes, chiropractic is nothing new - but rather a better , safer and more logical method of treatment and prevention .

S lowly turn your head from side to side. Now look up, then touch your chin to your chest.

What happens ? Does your neck grate or hurt?

Why suffer from neck problems, when we can help get rid of your pain and restore your range of motion !

Neck pain is common, affecting an estimated 70 percent of people at some point in their lives. But that doesn't mean it's normal or that you have to live with it! !

Aside from making your life miserable, prolonged stiffness can increase your likelihood of degenerative disc damage over time.

Keeping your cervical spine healthy allows full motion and, at che same time, prevents your neck from moving too much.

By maintaining this delicate balance, Chiropractic care helps eliminate pain-without drugs or surgery.

DRUGS ARE NOT THE ANSWER TO YOUR

SORE, STIFF NECK ! A new medical study published in

the Annals of Internal Medicine Uan 2012) concluded, " ... SMT [Spinal Manipulative Therapy ] was far more effective than medication in both the short and long term."

Researchers evaluated 272 individuals with neck pain between the ages of 18 and 65. The above study compared three treatment groups: Chiropractic spinal adjustments, home exercise and medication .

Narcotics and muscle relaxants were prescribed for patients that

did not respond to (or couldn't tolerate) nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) .

According to the study, "Participants who received medications seemed to fare worse, with a consistently higher use of pain medications for neck pain ... "

While the home exercise group also fared better than those on medications, the Chiropractic group had the best overall results. After only three months of Chiropractic care, over one-third remained pain-free a year lacer!

Millionsofcervic~,!~D e; ut/11~ .I adjustments have already helped patients just like you

move painlessly again- with proven WHY WE DON'T JUST "CHECK UP" safety!! FROM THE "NECK UP" !

While a string of studies leave no doubt that neck adjustments are completely safe, we want to tell you about one landmark report published in the prestigious medical journal Spine. Some 19,722 patients with neck pain were evaluated right after getting their Chiropractic neck adjustment and then again a week later.

All totaled , data was obtained from 50,276 cervical spine manipulations and 28,807 treatment consultations. There were NO reports of serious adverse effects!

Let's face it: Flexible, pain-free neck motion makes it easier to work , drive, garden, paint your ceiling, stargaze ... or whatever you enjoy doing looking up, down and all around !

You already know neck problems can diminish the quality of your life. Yet, so often, neck pain stems from a treatable nerve irritation. That's where we come in!

A whiplash injury, arthritis , tension or even poor posture can irritate or inflame the nerve roots that exit your cervical spine. Regardless of the cause, neck pain- and its

H Your neck muscles, ligaments, tendons

or discs can be injured either through "sudden trauma'' or "daily wear

You could have a headache, a shooting pain down your arm,

tingling in your wrist, elbow pain, a weak hand grip, pain between your

shoulders , or mid-back pain that actually originates in your neck.

These other areas can be the target of your pain, but not the source of your pain.

The science behind Chiropractic care allows us to pinpoint the underlying source of your problem and provide long-term relief!

Anatomy Lesson

The Oh-So-Flexible Shoulder

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints of the body because it is actually not a single joint but a series of joints that work together to allow for movement of the arm. For this reason the shoulder is commonly referred to as the "shoulder complex ." The shoulder complex is comprised of three main bones: the clavicle (collarbGnej,

which connects the showlt:Jer ~· · to the stemum (l:hreastoonej;

the scapula /shoulder blade), a flat, triang ,ular bone that forms the shoulder socket and the humerus /upper arm bone), a long bone with a rounded end that fits into the

FIGURE A: The Bones and Joints socket forming a .. ball and of the Shoulder Complex socket" joint (see figure A) .

MORE MOBILE, LESS STABLE

The shoulder is the most freely mcvable joint in the body, with a range of motion greater than any other joint. Unfortunately, this mobility also makes the shoulder the least stable joint of the body It is prone to injury and wear and tear. We take our shoulders and their flexibility for granted-that is, until an injury makes us realize how valuable this joint is in everything we do.

The "ball and socket" of the shoulder is very shallow /unlike the hip joint socket, which is much deeper and therefore more stable). The shallowness of the joint is what allows for its great freedom of movement. This freedom also places a great deal of stress on the ligaments and muscles that surround and protect the joint. The

Volume 1

shoulder is more dependent on these "soft tissues" for stability and support than any other joint.

SHOULDER INJURIES

The causes of shoulder pain are numerous. Active people, especiallYt at 1.etes, are prone to injuries involving the muscles /the "rotat0r cuff") and ligaments of the shoulder. Old~r i dividuals.Gften develop wear and tear changes iITT the ja>iflt Fractures and dislocations are a relatively c<Dmmon result of trauma to the shoulder . Shoulder pain can also arise from other areas of the body Neck injuries can "refer" pain into the shoulder area, as can problems in the wrist and elbow Certain internal organs such as the heart and gall bladder can also refer pain to the shoulder .

It is easy to see the importance of a proper diagnosis in any shoulder disorder. Obtaining a patient's thorough history, performing an examination, and administering testing procedures all help us determine the cause of the problem. It is especially important that shoulder injuries not be ignored or overlooked, because the shoulder is highly susceptible to a condition known as "frozen shoulder." In this syndrome, an injury causes pain, which in turn results in inactivity . With a lack of movement fibrous adhesions /scar tissue) develop in the joint. If allowed to continue, this vicious cycle of pain and disuse can result in a "frozen shoulder'~a shoulder with a very limited..range of motion.

The care and treatment of shoulder injuries is a team effort with your involvement being crucial to your recovery. If you should have any questions regarding a shoulder injury or any other problem, please call for a consultation . We're here to help!

Touching On Nerve News We recently had a patient come into the office who complained of neck pain right after a fall, and stated that her arm and fingers started feeling "numb and achy" the day after. Her question was one that is often asked: '' I hurt my neck-why are my fingers numb?"

The spinal cord gives off a pair of spinal neNes at each vertebral ~vel /figure A). Five of these nerves /CS through Tl) JOJn

together to form a group of neNes called n

the brachia/ plexus. This FIGURE A

plexus of neNes then travels down through the shoulder and into the arm . Each neNe in the group supplies a specific portion of the arm and/or hand-the area fed by each neNe is called a dermatome. Figure B represents a "dermatome map" of the arm.

A problem somewhere along the course of a neNe can cause symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or pain in the dermatome associated with that neNe . For example, during her fall, our patient injured her neck aAEl-iFFir-ateEJ-tJ1e-G6-anEJ-c;;._7 neNes in the canal where the neNes exit from the vertebrae. As a result, in addition to her neck pain, she experienced numbness in the thumb, forefinger, and middle finger of her hand .

Symptoms such as these are a warning sign that a problem exists, and a proper diagnosis is crucial in getting to the root of the problem . Dermatome maps are one_ of the tools we use to do just that.

Before Stretching, Reach for These Tips

There's a right way and a wrong way to stretch your body. To get maximum results without injuring yourself , here are some general tips to remember, no matter what kind of stretching program you're involved in :

• Relaxation. It is most important that you be relaxed during your stretching program . Find a quiet, comfortable place to do your stretches. Take your time, forget your worries, and concentrate on what you're doing .

• Warm Environment . Be sure you're stretching in a warm room , never on a cold floor . Warmth will facilitate a good stretch, while cold causes contraction of muscle tissue and prevents an optimum stretch.

• Breathing. Breathe in a deep, relaxed manner . There is a tendency to hold your breath while stretching , depriving the muscles of the oxygen they need to be properly relaxed.

• Never Bounce. As children, most of us were taught to bounce during our stretches, with the idea that this helps to elongate the muscle fibers.

• Pain. The old adage, "No pain , no gain," is generally outdated . "If it hurts-stop," is a safer and more effective approach. Some discomfort will often be associated with your program, but if you experience real pain, something is probably wrong. The best advice is to ask us if you're having any pain during your stretching regimen .

• Before and After. You should always stretch before any strenuous activity We have a habit of overlooking stretching before routine, daily activities that are stressful, but it's just as important to prepare for these efforts as it is to stretch before a game of basketball or tennis . It's also a good idea to stretch after a workout, as this will help you maintain an optimum resting muscle length .

Use these tips to stretch your body the safe way.

Looking Forward to Baby, Not Backache

A persistent nagging backache . Most pregnant women suffer from it, and the majority feel it is just an inevitable consequence of pregnancy. This need not be the easel A little effort and proper care can minimize or erase the back pain associated with pregnancy, and allow the pregnancy to be a time of joy and expectation rather than one of misery and waiting .

WHY DOES PREGNANCY CAUSE BACKACHE?

There are several reasons why an expectant mother is susceptible to back pain. The first is the most obvious: As the fetus grows, the abdomen expands and protrudes, ·increasing the curvature in the lumbar or low back /hyperlordosis). The added weight and hyperlordosis combine to place greater stress on the low back. Secondly, the generalized fatigue of pregnancy adds to the

-- - stres5-0A tf:l@-IGw-Baf k muscles as they try to cope with all these changes . A third factor of low back pain during pregnancy is less obvious but no less

important. During the last few months of pregnancy, the body releases specialized hormones , such as relaxin, designed to relax the ligaments of the pelvis to allow for delivery The problem here is that these hormones also cause the ligaments of the spine to become more lax, creating instability in the low back.

WHAT TO DO?

As _ with so many conditions, the key here is prevention . Chiropractic manipulation during pregnancy and post-partum has proven to be an effective tool in the reduction or elimination of pregnancy-induced low back pain . As a preventive measure, periodic manipulation can often help women to avoid the onset of backache altogether . A proper stretching and exercise program is also crucial, and using common sense when performing daily activitieslifting, sitting, sleeping, and so on-must be made a priority.

With a well-rounded approach, back pain need not be a by-product of pregnancy. If you're pregnant, ask us about an approach that's best for you .

This morning, millions of Americans f woke up pain free, thanks to Chiropractic care. Unfortunately, countless others were not so fortunate. They do not know of Chiropractic's natural ability to relieve pain and improve health. Many of those in pain will go through their day, suffering needlessly, or seeking temporary relief through drugs, or worse yet, anticipating surgery. Most of this suffering is simply unnecessary.

Since its beginning in 1895, Chiropractic has developed systematic diagnostic methods to uncover and correct many of the body's problems. These methods are based on, and supported by, persistent, scientific research.

A clear advantage to the chiropractic phi~ losophy is its desire to determine the cause of your symptoms. Once the pro~ !em area has been identified, your treatment plan will be established. Our first priority is to relieve any pain you are experiencing. We then work to strengthen and stabilize the area to withstand nor~ ma! daily activities. Our last goal is to help you achieve the optimal state of health you deserve.

All of these goals are achieved without drugs or surgery. Wouldn't you like to join millions who wake up every day pain free?

Shouldn't you try Chiropractic?

The Spinal Column's Role in Maintaining Health The spinal column is made up of 24 movable bones called verte~ brae. Along with the brain and spinal cord, is an integral part of the nervous system, your body's communication center. Vertebrae are stacked on top of each other, and are separated by pads called discs. Discs act as shock absorbers and provide spac~ ing bet.ween the vertebrae, and Hexibility to the spinal column. The spinal column houses the spinal cord, which is the body's communication link to the brain. Nerves exit the spinal column through small openings between the vertebrae called foramina. Every tissue and organ in the body is connected to nerves. They are controlled by nerve impulses that originate in the brain, travel down the spinal cord via nerves to their destination, and then back again to the brain. Any interference of this message system can cause a disturbance in normal body func~ tions. A subluxation occurs when one or more vertebrae are out of their natural alignment. This places

pressure on the spinal nerve and affects the transmission of nerve impulses. As a result, the function and healing process of vital parts and organs of the body is affected1 Back pain, headaches, shoulder, hip, and leg pain, as well as other symptoms are often the result of vertebral subluxa~ tion. Chiropractic care focuses on locating and returning these vertebrae to a more normal position, thereby remov~ ing pressure off of spinal nerves. This enables the life~giving nerve impulses to travel freely to affected areas and restore health.

The Types of Conditions Treated

Headaches . Approximately 63 million people have the types of headaches that can be helped by chiropractic care. Seventy two to ninety percent of patients reported improvement or cure of headaches through chiropractic care.

Back Pain 8 out of 10 Americans will suffer from back pain at some time in their life. Chiropractic care was proven significantly more effective, particularly for patients with chronic (long term) and severe

' pain. In July 1994 a well respected medical journal

llii,._,~ -=--- ...

published that 51 % of all back surgeries are unnecessary.

Whiplash ... Neck Pain Neck pain and arthritis from minor fender benders affect millions of Americans without them knowing it. Just because there was no damage to the car, does not mean there is nothing wrong with you. Chiropractic care can significantly reduce headaches, pain, and the risk of arthritis from these types of injuries that often go unnoticed.

Sciatica In a case study of 59 patients suffering from sci~ atica, chiropractic care was able to reduce the pain and suffering of 90% of the participating patients.

MEDICAL

Chiropractic is NothmgNew

Chiropractic has grown from one "doctor" and one "patient" to become the largest drugless healing profession in the world! Why? Results! Chiropractic was discovered in 1895, in Davenport , Iowa, when D.D. Palmer gave the first "adjustment" to Harvey Lillard. Lillard was deaf from an injury to his spine seventeen years earlier. Palmer suspected that misaligned

vertebrae in his spine were pinching or putting pressure on nerves causing his hearing loss. That first adjustment restored the hearing of Harvey Lillard, and Chiropractic was born! With the growth steadily increasing, we have found the need to acquaint new patients with the nature of Chiropractic care.

What to Do for Ba Sooner or later an amazing 8 of every 10 people

in the United States will suffer with back pain. So many people have found relief from back pain

through chiropractic care that chiropractors often are thought of as back doctors. Of course, they do specialize in care of the spine, but spinal problems can not only cause back pain, but all sorts of health problems throughout your body. Still, chiropractic care is indeed effective for back pain. In fact, The U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recently appointed a panel of medical experts who reviewed some 3,900 studies on care for acute low back pain. The panel rejected bedrest , surgery (except rare cases) , injections into the back, and all oral prescription drugs (such as antidepressants or steroids). In contrast, they found that spinal manipulation, which usually is performed by a chiropractor, "can be helpful for patients with acute low back problems." 1 For pain, they found over the counter medications (aspirin, etc.) worked as well as prescriptions but with less side effects.

There are fewer studies on long term chronic back pain than for short-term acute back pain. Still a recent study in the respected medical journal, Spine, found chiropractic care beneficial for ongoing chronic back pain. The traditional approach for patients with chronic back pain has been back pain school to teach patients how to cope and live with the pain . Chiropractic care was compared to back pain school in this study and the chiropractic group did significantly better. The

researchers concluded, "Spinal manipulation is clinically useful in chronic pain patients who have been suffering for seven weeks or more."2

So many scientific and government studies have proven the effectiveness of chiropractic care for back pain that in 1993, the government of Ontario, in a 216 page study of all available evidence, found chiropractic care of low back pain superior to medical management in terms of safety, evidence of effectiveness, evidence of cost effectiveness, and in patient satisfaction. 3

Necli Pain? You May Have a Whiplash In;ury

Car accidents, blows to the back in sports, and on the job injuries can easily leave you with a whiplash injury. While sometimes symptoms

are felt immediately, often symptoms are delayed for days, months or even years.1

The most common symptom of whiplash (affecting 62 percent to 92 percent of those injured) is neck pain, and it usually begins between two hours and two days after the accident.2 This is often the result of tightened muscles that react to either muscle tears or excessive movement of joints from ligament damage. The muscles tighten in an effort to splint up and support the head, limiting the excessive movement. While muscle relaxants can relieve some of the discomfort of

Muscle tears often are described as burning pain, prickling or tingling. More severe disc damage may cause sharp pain with certain movements which are relieved by holding your hand over your head.

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may have a whiplash

injury that, left uncared for, can cause these muscle spasms, using muscle relaxants without wearing a support collar to brace and hold the head in place can undermine this natural protection from the muscles and cause further injury.

BASIC WHIPLASH SYMPTOMS

far more serious problems months, even years later.

The Quebec Automobile Insurance Society recently released an exhaustive study of more than 10,382 articles on neck injuries and concluded most interventions for whiplash injury were unproven, includ

An estimated 66 percent to 70 percent of those suffering from whiplash complain of headaches.s The pain may be on one side or both, on again and off again or constant, in one spot or more general. These headaches, like neck pain, are often the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep the head stable and, like tension headaches, they are often felt behind the eyes.

Shoulder pain, often described as pain radiating down the back of the neck into the shoulder blade area, also may be the result of tensed muscles .

On The Job Injuries W orkers' Compensation

Insurance covers chiropractic care for good reason. Some 13 separate studies in various states have repeatedly found that chiropractic care gets people back to work much sooner and at far lower cost that medical care for the same type of on the job back injuries. For the insurance company, not only are the direct costs lower (for seeing the

doctor, prescriptions and hospital costs) but the compensation costs for lost work time are dramatically lower as well.

Chiropractic care usually involves more visits than medical care but it leads to fewer chronic cases, and gets people back on their feet and back to work sooner. That is great for the patient and reason enough to choose chiropractic care for on the job injuries .

looking for Answers to the Pain of Sciatica Volume I4, No.9

The sciatic nerve is created by

the gathering of nerves that

extend from the spinal cord down through the pelvic bones.

The sciatic nerve branches out

and controls the organs in the pelvis and everything else from

the hips to the toes. The sciatic nerve helps you run for the bus and wiggle your toes in the

sand.

Sciatica is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in the body. Burning pain in the low back, hips, and legs are common symptoms of sciatica . Low back

pain is not always part of sciatica, but often comes with it .

Usually, sciatica affects only

one side. Pain often radiates down the buttock or leg and can range from a tingling, burning, pins-and-needles feeling to

excruciating, shooting pain that makes standing up nearly impossible . Often, coughing, sneezing, and sitting make the pain worse.

Sciatica can frequently be

caused by the misalignment of

the joints of the spinal bones in

the low back or pelvis, called

vertebral subluxation. These misaligned spinal bones create

pressure, choking on the nerves.

This, obviously, interferes with that sciatic nerve's function. If the joint misalignment is left

uncorrected,

degeneration can begin to

occur.

In the past,

long periods of bed rest were commonly pre

scribed for sciat

ic pain and mal

function.

Recent studies have confirmed that lengthy bed rest is a waste of time and may interfere with healing . Another com-

mon prescription, epidural injec

tions, does not help patients suf

fering from sciatica, either. Researchers in Germany did a

six -month study published this

year in Clinical Orthopaedics, and Related Research. These

researchers found that spinal corticosteroid injections do not

Garlic May Lower Heart Disease Risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For centuries, peo

ple have relied on the power of garlic for everything from enhancing athlet ic~ performance · to thinning blood. The herb has

even been found in tombs from ancient Egypt and Rome .

In recent times, researchers have uncovered what is perhaps garlic's most important effect: lowering the risk of heart disease.

"The published studies in their aggregate suggest that appropriate usage of allium derivatives from garlic may

potentially play a role in the maintenance of optimal cardiac

function, 11 according to Michelle H . Loy and Dr. Richard S. Rivlin

of Memorial Sloan -Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York.

Their review is published in a recent issue of Nutrition in Clinical Care, published by

Tufts University . The researchers looked at

studies investigating the effect of garlic on risk factors for heart disease . Several studies suggest that garlic may lower total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and blood pressure. It may also

help keep blood thin, reducing the risk of blood clots and

stroke, and function as an antioxidant .

Antioxidants neutralize the effect of free radicals, molecules that -are natural byproducts of metabolism that damage DNA and lead to chronic disease such as heart disease, as well as agmg.

"Further research is needed to examine the structure-func

tion relationships of the various allium derivatives of garlic, the amounts in foods and supple

ments required for efficacy, and the possible effects of combining garlic with other nutrients

and medications,'' Loy and Rivlin conclude.

The Stars Are Using Chiropractic to Help Them Shine

Arecent article in USAJbday

revealed what actor, Mel Gibson, does to keep fit for

active roles like the role he played in "The Patriot." This movie called for a lot of physically demanding activity including running and horseback riding. Gibson was quoted as being relieved to have more of the action scenes done by his younger co-star. He said less action was fine with him: "You can't avoid some of that, 11 said

Gibson "but it's not as_easy as

it used to be." Gibson's answer to the demands on his body was to have a chiropractor on the set .

By the end of the movie, Gibson reports, half the people on the set were using Gibson's chiropractor for their own needs.

On the sports scene, profes sional baseball's Home Run King, Mark McGuire, has been a chiropractic patient since his days with Oakland.

Of course, supreme golf er,

Tiger Woods, has been a chiropractic patient a good portion of

his life. He was even one of the celebrity guests riding on the

chiropractic float in the 1995 Rose Bowl Parade. The float honored 100 years of chiropractic and won a special award. Tiger? He's done O.K. since then, too.

By winning the British Open in July, he became the youngest player in history to have won all four of professional golf's coveted "Grand Slam" tournaments.

"Buddy, You Don't Have Your Head on Straight!"

Did you know that 3 trillion

(3,000,000,000,000 ) chan

nels of communication run to

and from the brain through the

top bone in your neck? Did you

also know that this top bone,

the first cervical vertebra, actu

ally surrounds and protects part

of your brain, the brain stem?

You knew all this didn't you.

You probably also knew that

this first bone is specially

designed, not only to protect the

brain stem and spinal cord, but

to give the skull its greatest

degree of mobility. It also is

designed to restrict movement

that would endanger the deli

cate tissues within . (No neck

spinning around like an owl's .. .

get it?)

This top vertebra (neck

bone) is called the atlas after

the Greek character whose eter

nal job it was to hold up the

world. Since this bone holds up

and supports your head, atlas is

a pretty good name for this very

important bone.

Now, imagine what would happen if the atlas bone were to shift a bit cock-eyed, become "a

little out of whack", as they say.

Whether from an accident,

stress, bad posture, too fat of a

pillow, or repetitive work or other activity, this bone can

become misaligned. Then, buddy, you don 't have your head on straight!

This is not entirely a cos

metic problem . Remember the

first sentence? Three trillion

channels of communication run through the atlas from the brain

to all parts of the body . These

communication channels carry

information on the function of

your heart, lungs, kidneys,

arms, legs, reproductive organs .

All of it. The function and

health of every cell, tissue, ves

sel, and cavity is directly related

to the strength and ability of

these nerve channels to trans

mit information from the tis

sues to the brain and from the

brain to the tissues.

With your atlas "out of

whack", so goes the

rest of you.

Interference to the stability or misalignment of the atlas is likely responsible for more physical disability than you might imagine . Along with the

resulting nerve mal

function caused by

the stressing atlas

misalignment, pain and swelling often

occur after the damage.

The good news for those

millions of people who, literally,

do not have their heads on

straight is this : Chiropractors

set people straight, everyday.

So many conditions respond to the same procedure!

Chiropractic adjustments.

Careful calculated movements

are made to the atlas area of the

spine to return the spine to its

normal strongest position.

Atlas can hold up your "world"

as it should. Once the atlas is

returned to normal, function

follows and pain and inflamma

tion eases.

Give us a call, today. We'll

set that atlas straight and keep

it properly supporting your

world.

help patients with sciatica

improve any faster than those

not given such injections.

What does seem to be the correct prescription is conservative chiropractic adjustments to realign the misaligned vertebrae. According to the recently

released United States Agency

for Health Care Policy and

Research (AHCPR ) guidelines,

"relief of discomfort can be

accomplished most safely" with

chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic care (sometimes

coupled with simple exercises )

normalizes the joint mobility,

returns the bones to their proper

position, and takes the pressure

off the sciatic nerve. Pain and

inflammation leave the area.

Function is restored. Health is

restored.

Sciatica is a horrible experi -

ence . Regardless of what you

may have been told in the past,

you may get rid of it. You may

not have to "live with it" as

you've heard. Correction of the

cause of sciatica may be as close

as a call to our office. We'd be

happy to do our part in the

restoration of your health and

the elimination of the vertebral

subluxations that have been

interfering with it. ■

As seen in Readers Digest under the title, Spine Tingling:

My husband and I were hik

ing in Yosemite. We stopped to look at an ancient sequoia that was twisted and

leaning over. Next to us was a

man and his daughter. "Daddy, that tree needs an adjustment!"

the girl said. We caught the father's eye as he shrugged and said, "I'm a chiropractor." ■

KIDS NEED CHIROPRACTORS TOO! W ithin this edition of our office newsletter we 'll be telling you about how children can benefit from taking a "prevention " approach to potential health problems as well as how chiropractic treatment can benefit youngsters as well as adults . And, when we talk about children, we feel that the importance of good posture is an ideal place to start. Good posture plays a vital role in children 's health and development. Good posture insures good balance . Good posture insures an even distribution of the heavy loads a spine must endure . An even distribution of this weight will minimize the strain exerted upon the intervertebral discs and upon the vertebral bodies as well. Poor posture in children can develop in many ways . Imitating parents whose posture is no t up to par and laziness are but two reasons . A third is based upon the misconception that training a child to stand with his or her chest out and stomach in is the only way to develop good posture, when good posture is a combination of that plus the correct positioning to the lower back and pelvis and the positioning of the neck and head as well. Teenage boys who feel self-conscious when they suddenly grow to new heights tend to slouch in order to appear less conspicuous. Young girls whose breasts are starting to form sometimes tend to hunch their shoulders and round their backs in an attempt to hide embarrassment over their emerging womanhood The results of poor posture in childhood and adolescence can be found in the adults who visit our offices for relief from spine-related problems. There is no substitute for good posture, and good posture habits start at a

very early age. When considering all the pain, stress, fatigue and tension that eminates from poor posture , we must warn all parents that the

amount of effort you invest in making sure that your child stands straight and tall is as important as any investment you will make in your child's healthy future . Please feel free to discuss this most vital aspect the next time you visit our offices.

LOWER BACK PAIN . ..

MR. MEAN JEANS AND MORE Toe coccyx, located at the lowest part of your spinal column can be one source of lower back pain. Depending upon the individual, the coccyx is about two inches long and comprised of three or four bones which are fused together . It is attached to the lower point of the sacrum with a joint which is slightly flexible. A recent Mayo Clinic newsletter reported that many people, especially teens, who suffer from coccygodynia (pain in the "tailbone") suffer as a result of wearing tight denim jeans with heavily reinforced seams . Whether you suffer coccygodynia or any other form of lower back pain as the result of a bad fall, birthing, tight jeans or the scores of other "life events ," remember that we can help allieviate the condition known as "lower back pain ." ■

NOT FOR ADULTS ONLY ...

SCOIJOSIS When your child stands straight, does one hip seem higher or more prominent? Is one shoulder or shoulder blade higher or more prominent than the other? Is there

a greater distance between the arm and the body on one side? Does the child lean to one side? With the child bending forward,

arms hanging loosely and palms touch

area? These are

some of the ways for you to determine if your child

be one of every ten youngsters with lateral curvature of the spine called adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. It can progress quickly during the teen years and lead to pain and deformity and even heart disorders . In most schools scoliosis or posture checks are being performed by the school nurse or gym teachers ... Hardly the best trained personnel to trust a child 's spine with . Why not give us a call and have your children examined for this not-so-uncom-mon situation .

WHEN LOOSE SHOES ...

BRING THE BLUES

It's understandable when parents tend to buy infrequently-used footwear such as roller skates, ice skates and cleated shoes a size or two larger than is currently necessary so that they can be used longer, feeling that larger socks will compensate . However, this can cause serious problems for your children's feet as well as affect their posture and spinal alignment as well. When a foot moves within a shoe, it can cause the "floating foot syndrome" wherein the toes contract when they are forced into the front of

the shoe. This leaves the arch with inadequate support and the muscles fatigued . Parents should always watch for the tell-tale signs of improper footwear such as checking how the child walks and for redness, irritations or calluses on the feet. It's also important to examine the soles of your children's shoes for excessive wear on one side or another. If so, your child may have an imbalance which should be checked out and, perhaps, treated . ■

MORET.V ....

FAT CHANCE! The average 6-11 year old child watches about 24 hours of T.V. per week. The problem is that the more they watch in their younger years, the more likely they are to become overweight in their teens . It seems that the time spent viewing television increases betweenmeal snacking while taking time away from the exercising which is crucial to a child 's growth and development. The incidence of obesity increases by 2 percent for every hour of T.V. viewed by 12 to 1 7 year-olds. Twenty percent

~ of teens who ~ watch more

than five hours · of T.V. a day

A POUND OF AUTO PREVENTION

ON CHILD RESTRAINTS &WHIPLASH A.bout 15 percent of serious traffic injuries to children under the age of fourteen occur without a crash . Often the child simply crawls out the window of a moving car . In other cases, the car suddenly stopped, swerved, accelerated , or turned. Nearly half of non-crash injuries come about as a result of the child's being thrown out of the car. The rest result from a collision against something inside the car. Children need to be protected by a restraint system , especially in the age group under four. We adults need "autoprevention" as well, and since

~ ~ ·-· -seatbelts can't do the whole job, whiplash can result. During an accident, much of the body's motion occurs in the spine. Your neck vertabrae can easily fall out of alignment from such a rapid force . This much force can pro-pel the neck violently forward and then backward . Don't forget that the result of such a tremendous impact, if left untreated, can be more than just whiplash and lower back injuries . We in chiropractic have a long history of success in dealing with a whiplash injury and its long-term ramifications. ■

STEMMING THE STRAINS .. .

OF GROWING PAINS It seems that every September, when it's time to go back to

school, we really notice how much our children have grown in the past year . If your child has ever complained of aches in the soft tissues of his or her shin, calf or thigh, usually in both legs, you would most likely attribute the problem to the condition com monly referred to as "growing pains." In fact, about a fifth of otherwise healthy children and young teenagers usually develop these symptoms . The cause is unknown , but what is recognized is that these attacks can last several minutes to half an hour, almost always occur at night and usually awaken the child. They can take place over a period of months or years, usually at the time of rapid growth. At times, the cause of these aches can be more serious in origin . A congenital bone abnormality, infection , stress fracture or inflammation of the muscles or tendons can be at fault. This is why we would suggest stopping by for a simple examination if your child is suffering from these symptoms. "Growing pains " may come in many shapes and sizes. If your child experiences "growing" pains which result in his or her complaining regularly, these pains are not "normal." Continued pain or discomfort should be a warning sign , and an appointment to visit our offices can result, if nothing more , in putting your mind at ease! ■

CHIROPRACTIC ...

THE NATURAL ALTERNATIVE Today's Chiropractor stands hand-in-hand with other members of the healthcare community. The only difference is that Chiropractic believes in treatment without medication whenever and wherever possible. There

are those, however, who claim that Chiropractic is a "second class citizen" in the field of healthcare. This is simply not true! Chiropractic is not only recognized as a health service under Medicare, but Congress has authorized payments for Chiropractic care under Medicaid. Workmen's Compen sation Programs provide for Chiropractic coverage under the law. The U.S. Department of Immigra tion allows student status to aliens who are enrolled in a Chiropractic college, while the GI Bill will pay for Chiropractic education . As Chiropractors, we are accepted as expert witnesses in court cases where our experience and expertise are applicable. Chiropractic practices are recognized in every state in the union . In fact, practically all of us know of instances where M.D.'s have re ferred patients to a Chiropractor . Second class citizen? Hardly. Chiropractic answers today's healthcare needs effectively, economically and, most of all, naturally. ■

Do You Have a Vertebral Subluxation? If you are like many Americans,

your spine has one or more spinal vertebrae that are not in their proper alignment.

This means that one of the spinal bones has moved and does not match those vertebrae above or below it. This condition could be called "The Silent Killer." Since 99 percent of your nervous system deals with body function and 1 percent with pain, the subluxation could continue undetected for years unless triggered by a traumatic situation causing pain. · Look at the sample illustration. As you can see, one of the bones is out of place. This is called a "Displaced Vertebra", or spinal subluxation. If this bo

When observed by a lay person, the principle of chiropractic care often appears detailed and complex.

It is necessary for doctors of chiropractic to have a clear understanding of the body if they are to be effective in their treatment of patients. Even though you may not have an understanding of the various nerve trunks, t he muscle groups, or the organ functions, the principle of bodily function is relatively simple.

electrical power plant. It creates the energy necessary to keep the body running. Much like a power plant, it sends this energy over a series of wires or nerves to the various organs and muscle groups located throughout the body.

These nerves begin at the base of the brain and run downward through an opening in the spinal column to the area of the body near the organ where the nerve branches out from the spine through yet another opening to the organ or muscle.

When the nerve impulse is sent from the brain, if all is well, the muscle or organ will receive a full burst of energy and function properly. A simple example would be the electrical power plant near

your home. If the lines are up, and the power plant working, you need only to turn on the light switch to get full power and light into your home.

The spine is a miracle of engineering. It is comprised of 24 hollow bones called vertabrae. These vertabrae are separated by a pad or "disc" which allows the spine to be flexible, and our bodies to bend.

During our everyday activities our body undergoes a series of bumps, jars, twists, etc. These occurrences can occasionally move the vertabrae slightly from their proper alignment. When this happens, the spinal bone presses on

the nerve trunk as it exits from the vertabrae, and the flow of energy from the brain is interrupted or reduced.

This reduction in nerve energy causes your body to act much like the appliances in your home would act if you reduced the electrical power which they received. You would notice that they would work poorly, or not at all.

Due to this interruption of nerve energy, the organs and muscle groups which are powered by this energy may begin to malfunction, causing problems in areas of the body often not even related to the spine.

toes. There are two nerv . On extends from the spine down the left leg and the other down t 1ght leg . The roots of the sciatic nerve are in the lower spinal column, which is the most likely area where sciatica begins.

A victim of sciatica can be a healthy person in all ways with all bodily functions normal, yet can be partially or totally invalid, due to sciatica. The pinching of certain spinal nerves between spinal bones can cause unbearable pain. Sciatic pain is tearing and sharp. It shoots down the Sciatic nerve and extends into the hip, thigh, and the back portion of the leg. It may also go on to the ankle and foot, or can be present in all of these areas at once. The pain usually is cottstant, although it may leave for an hour or a day only to return.

Sciatic pain is so mild in the beginning that most people ignore it all together. It can be ignored for years as nothing and then the slightest wrong movement turns into a violent sciatica. By ignoring mild back pains, treatment may be unnecessarily complicated and prolonged.

And as always, your doctor of chiropractic works to find the cause and correct it without the use of drugs . Call our office today.

Ask The Doctor Q: My husband has trouble sitting for any length of time. Even though he has tried to limit the time he sits, he has pains in his lower back and legs. The muscle relaxers he has been taking worked for awhile, but now he can bare· ly sleep at night and is constantly in pain. What can he do?

A: Not having diagnosed your husband's problem, it is difficult to determine the exact cause of his discomfort. It is possible that he has somehow misaligned the vertebrae in his lower back . This could have been caused by many things, lifting wrong, a fall that may not have attracted much attention. Even sleeping wrong could be the culprit. Most assurably, muscle relaxers or pain killers will do little if anything to eliminate the "cause" of the discomfort. He should make an appointme11t with his doctor to have his problem properly diagnosed. It is extremely possible tha short period of spinal adjustments nli h alleviate his discomfort, and get hi ff t e muscle relaxers.

Q: I've been under chiropractic care for a short while, and I notice that I'm ex· periencing some discomfort similar to what I felt a year or so ago, before I started my treatments. I feel better than before, but this discomfort bothers me. What causes this?

A: When the vertebrae in your spinal column first became misaligned, you probably felt many of the discomforts that you are feeling now. This was caused by nerves being irritated by spinal bones (vertebrae) which pressed on them, and by muscle and organ re-adjustment due to this change in the body structure. Over time , the body will tend to restructure itself to compensate for the misaligned ebrae (known as subluxa-tion). Now e spine is being put in its

THE CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH

What is the Chiropractic Ap roach, and will it help me? This is a que · that I am asked quite often and it is a very good one. The quickest way to answer that question is to tell you that the Doctor of Chiropractic treats the cause of the problem, unlike many other health care services that merely treat the symptom.

When you come to our office and are in discomfort or pain, we don't just ask, "Where does it hurt". Our most important consideration is to find out WHY it hurts. Without finding the cause we cannot effectively treat the symptom. I also understand that each patient is an individual who must be treated and analyzed as such.

Getting to the cause of your problem is our first goal. After asking many questions about

t any falls or injuries you tice that I take great

After reviewing your case history, and with the use of x-rays, I am able to determine if spinal subluxation is the cause of your health problem. Only now can I begin to remove the cause of your problem, and let the recuperative power of your body get back to work.

Once I have found the cause of your problem and have started you back on the road to recovery, you must work with me so I can continue to remove the cause. How long this will take varies with the circumstances of each individual. I can assure you that I will get you back to good health as quickly as possible.

Now that you understand the Chiropractic Approach, why don't you help yourself, a friend, or loved one by calling our office today.

Relief is only as faraway as your phone. As a Doctor of Chiropractic I believe that everyone is entitled to perfect health, Chiropractic could be your answer to natural, normal health ,

You should know that the body functions perfectly and normally, as nature intended, when there is a free flow of vital nerve energy from the brain, through the spinal cord and the nerves of the body to the organs, glands and muscles of the body,

"'er 1ght and ·dreams do not come true with the blink of an eye, you cannot expect what may have taken years to cause the problems you may be suffering from today to suddenly disappear with one visit to our office.

Physical problems may have started years ago when you fell off the bike as a child, or tripped down the stairs or even by simply lifting too heavy of an object in the wrong manner. Just as it has taken a long time for the symptoms to arise, you should not expect the cause to be corrected immediately. Just as a cut or bruise takes time to heal, a p_inched and deadened nerve takes time to heal.

Nature's process of repair may seem slow to you at times, but they are even more sure. We hope that with

our help you will understand the workings of Nature and come to understand that time is on your side. We want you to understand that for every effect there is a cause. The cause of sickness can be due to pressure on the nervous system and this can result in retardation of normal bodily functions. If this is not corrected, disease may result.

"It's Just Your Nerves" "Your trouble is nerves, just nerves,

that's all," many have been told . But your nerves are too important to your body to be dismissed so easily.

Nerves make possible every function of your body. Your nerves transmit all sensation to and from the brain. Your nerves make possible sight, smell, taste and hearing. Nerves maintain your balance and keep your body temperature at 98.6 degrees. Nerves control your blood pressure, stomach action, blood flow, speech and breathing. Nerves make your bowels move. Nerves make it possible to swallow. In fact, every function taking place in your body is under the control of the nerve system, often called "THE MASTER SYSTEM OF THE HUMAN BODY.'' This master system regulates and contro ls all other systems of the body, including the circulatory system, the digestive system, the respiratory system, the muscular system, the reproductive system, the glandular system, lymphatic system, and eliminative system.

NATURE'S HEALING POWER

Perhaps you have never been blessed with natural health natural health that comes only whe n you have a perfect, unblocked nerve system. I'm talking about the solid ''yours-forlife" kind of health that gives you more than enough strength and energy for the day's work builds firm tissue

and muscles all over the body fights off the usual deterioration of "middle age" brushes aside sickness, shrugs off ordina ry aches and pains rewards you contin uously w ith that "isn't-it-great-to-be-alive" feeling day after day.

Yes, that's the kind of health I mean. Not one person in a hundred has it today, but chances are you can enjoy health like that ... if you are willing to open your mind to a new look at life and health .

HEAL TH T AT LASTS Al l healing of lasting value comes

from within the body. You were born to be healthy, and health is w ithin you now. But good health depends on

in the organs and limbs serviced by these nerves.

Th€ malfunction of one organ can affect anoth,er and sometimes several. Nerves not only control every organ and function but intercommunicate and connect each part of the body to every other part. Whether next to the skin, close to the bone, or passing through tissue and muscle, whatever their function or wherever they go, all nerves connect with the spinal column and the b ain.

good nerve function. Nerves are the electrical system of

the human body and the spinal column is the "switchboard" controlling health.

;fhe nerves to all parts of the body start in the brain, pass down inside the spine, exit through narrow openings between the vertebrae, and extend outward to the various organs and limbs. Any pinching of these nerves as they leave the spine can cause trouble

part of the body. The nerves go to and energize every organ, tissue, and living cell of your body-arms, legs, abdomen, head , etc.

The Doctor of Chiropractic works w ith the spine and nerves. He has spent many years studying and learning the innermost secrets of the human nerv e system. His objective is to locate and correct the nerve trouble that may be causing the abnormal functions and disorders in you r body. By freeing the "blocked nerves " your chiropractor releases nature 's wonderful healing power.

HAVE YOU BEEN TESTED?

A simple, painless and inexpensive spine and nerve test can quickly reveal if you are a chiropractic case. You owe it to yourself and your family to have your nerve system tested and find out for sure. Every health problem has a cause and the cause must be found and corrected before you can get well.

Pick up the telephone now and call our office today and make an appointment for a chiropractic spine and nerve test.

Many persons think of chiropractic as a treatment of their conditions, feeling that when symptoms disappear there is no further need for chiropractic care. Their belief is far from the truth .

We are interested not only in restoring your health, but also in maintaining it . We know from study and experience that once vertebrae have gotten out of alignment and have been allowed to remain in incorrect positions over a long period, the bones just as easily can lip out of line after proper chiropractic adjustment, an il:ha the correct position of your vertebrae must be keP,t wntil the bones will stay in place naturally.

How Soon Should Chiropractic Care Start? Like everything else in life, it

should start at the beginning. Prenatal care is the best time to start. A healthy mother-to-be is very important not only to the mother during the time of pregnancy, but a must to the unborn child. A woman changes profoundly during her time of pregnancy, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Nearly every function of her body will change, even its structure in order to accommodate the growing embryo.

Nature has a way of helping the healthy motherto-be to accom -

modate the growing infant. Your nervous system is vital to a healthy pregnancy. Because organs depend on nerve impulses sent from the brain, any interference could cause the mother-to-be to experience kidney difficulties, severe lower back P.ain, pain in her hips and leg or pelvic discomfort.

arly consultation with your Doctor of Chiropractic is a good way to help Nature make this phase of your life a healthy and

fulfilling experience for the mother-to -be and the health and

well being of the unborn child.

Many parents wonder if taking their children to a chiropractor is a good idea. Often these are the same parents who will spare no expense or effort to correct visible injuries to their children.

While your child may appear happy and healthy, it is highly possible that th ough normal evezyday play habits, they may have received a spinal subluxation. Unlike the cut or scrape that is immediate and aemands attention, a misaligned spinal cVertebrae can exist unnoticed for some period o time before its effects are fully known.

These "effects" are usually wide ranging and long lasting. It may result in our child's vital or:gans not receiving the proper amount of nerve energy from the brain.

When this occurs, your son or daughter needs the same level ot im-mediate attention that you would give for an "obvious" external injury .

Independent studies on Industrial Back Injuries prove

CHIROPRACl' IC EFFECTIVE & INE P NS VE

While an industrial back injury is certainly painful to the employee, it also creates problems for labor, management and insurance companies . It's t o everyone's advantage to correct the back injury as quickly as possible. The question then ar ises as to which is the most efficient method of caring for industrial back injuries. Fortunately, we don't have to rely on mere opi nion for the answer; several ma jor studies of this very situation have already been made and are thoroughly documented.

It should be noted that the back strains and sprains that plague in dustry can afflict anyone. The identical type of injuries can often be found in the housewife who lifts a heavy basket of clothes, the office worker who shovels snow from the wa1k-, the weekend gardener, or in any. number of commonplace a ctivities. SUMMARY: We have now covered the facts as revealed by official records from people who could conceivably have no bias in the matter. They deal only in statistics. Ranging from 1949 through 1972 the conclusions are inescapable: chiropractic is far more effective in dealing with industrial back injuries. The records reach this inescapable conclusion without any additional comment being required.
