Coaching Staff: Head Coach Jeff O’Flaherty In no particular order, the 3 things Jeff enjoys to do most in life is coach hockey, promote a healthy lifestyle, and have a good time! Great things happen when you’re having fun… and creating an atmosphere of fun and hard work is his specialty. “Work hard, play hard… in that order”. His own work ethic is driven by a desire to achieve success that you do not find every day. At thecore of this drive is the word ‘team’. Reaching Individual goals and achievements is great but leading a team to glory is what sparks a feeling that is indescribable. This ‘family’ environment is what sets hockey apart from all other sports. Coach O'Flaherty lives for this environment and hehas the natural ability to convey it to others around him.

President (Owner) – Dr. Jeff O’Flaherty Occupation: Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine

902-407-3400

Jeff O’Flaherty has been involved in Minor Hockey in Nova Scotia for the last 10 years. He has served as a coach, developer and administrator during that time. Starting out as a coach, he expanded his role, serving as VP Development for two years and now President of SMH for the past three seasons. After playing in Sackville Minor Hockey during his childhood, Jeff was happy to get involved after a chance meeting with an old Atom coach. He quickly realized his passion for coaching and the special ability to connect with the players and led a Bantam AA program that has seen great success, including a provincial title and numerous tournament championships over that time. Jeff also has experience with elite level coaching, as a team lead at the HNS U15 selection camp in Antigonish in 2014 and as head coach of the Valley Major Midget WildCats where he created stability in the midget program, resulting in great improvements over two successful seasons. As VP Development, SMH, he strived to improve training as a whole for all players in Sackville Minor Hockey. With the challenges of ice availability, he began a "Before school program", Monday-Friday (Novice to Midget) at 6am, attending each session daily. He also established a model for Development Weekend that promotes community spirit and is a huge success that is built upon each year. In this role he also spear-headed the use of rink dividers for cross ice 3on3 practices, a fun and competitive environment. He founded the” SMH Scholar Award” which is given to the player who receives either the best, consistent grades OR shows the greatest improvement from term to term during the season. Jeff received the Lake District Recreation

Associations Volunteer of the Year award during his time as VP of Development with SMH. As president, Jeff's number one goal was to allow the kids earn their place. Minor hockey players deserve a fair opportunity and this has been established with the use of independent evaluators and the placement of parent coaches after evaluations. Another goal is to focus on skill development while keeping costs to hockey families at a minimum as per the HNS initiative. With this in mind he and other team members have created the "Rec development program" and the "Flyers Fundamentals program" which maximizes skill repetition and the use of ice time through shared ice, station based practices. The program allows players to be on the ice twice as much, at no additional cost. Lastly, Jeff continues to strive for a positive hockey environment by getting the people involved: players, parents, coaches, officials on the same page to enjoy their experiences in this sport.
