Our scheduled guest speaker, Head Coach Dan Hawkins of the UC Davis football team was unable to make today’s meeting John Patella explained that one of coach Hawkins’ assistant coaches had suddenly resigned during this important spring practice season and Coach Hawkins needed to interview a potential replacement at this time.
We had two of our own members eagerly fill in for the speaker:
First President Elect Jim Cahill told us about the PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) Conference he had recently attended. Cahill reported the Seminar was very motivating and inspiring. The seminar was meant to teach the incoming President how to build a new generation of Rotarian leadership, utilizing the full potential of our new generation Rotarians. President Elect Jim explained his plan for the next rotary year. Our Board of Directors will be using an Executive Committee, and separate expanded Avenue of Service subcommittee meetings to facilitate a better use of the member’s time. The executive committee will handle the financial business and the Avenues of Services will conduct their business separately. “I want to encourage new Members to volunteer to be leaders, and to participate in helping bring about the ‘generational shift’ in the Club necessary to keep us active, vital, and healthy,” says Jim Cahill.
Next, Barry Kalar used a fun game of Rotary Foundation “Jeopardy” to test our knowledge and help us learn more about the important work done by The Rotary Foundation.

OBJECT OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the: ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD: The application of ideal of service by every Rotarian to his/her/ personal, business and community life;
FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideals of service.
OPENING REMARKS FROM PRESIDENT WILD BILL
Welcome everyone! March is Water and Sanitation Month. 663 million people do not have access to clean water. One third of the world’s population does not have access to a toilet. Rotary Foundation helps with this. Last year the Rotary Foundation provided 19 million dollars in global
grants for this area of focus. They provided 76 million dollars in total addressing five other areas of focus. Our gifts and celebrations to the foundation do good in the world. It is great acts like these that make me proud to be the 68th
President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento.

Meals on Wheels Program Expansion
The staff at the Senior’s Center could use some more help. With our new members I am hoping that we can get 8 more volunteers to run a route on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays. It requires about one to one
and one half hours of your time once every four weeks, delivering meals to about 12 elderly or disabled West Sacramento residents. You
would be working with a partner, so grab a Rotary friend and let me know that you are willing to both help out. When we get 8 volunteers I will meet with you and we will organize our new group. Thanks for con-
sidering this way to provide Service Above Self.

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Bill’s Box
It was a “Luck of the Irish” gathering last Friday. I like corned beef and cabbage and the green beer topped it off. We also had a great turn-out. There was a little confusion with our speaker, Coach Hawkins from UC Davis, due to work related scheduling. It is my understanding we could have had a “fill-in,” but I I know we would rather re-schedule. I personally want to thank Jim Cahill for his PETS update and to Barry Kalar for his Foundation Jeopardy game. That was a great way to present the subject, especially after some green beer. Made it fun. Thanks to Jim and Barry for a last minute request and filling in as speakers. I want to thank the Interact Club for running the gathering on March 10th. The timing worked out well with a short, but great vacation in Maui. As I mentioned, my in-laws, Jim and Sharron Clark, asked Robin and I to accompany them for the week. Can’t turn down an invitation like that. I “celebrated” this outing at Friday’s gathering. Remember our vocational meeting this Friday at Sierra Donor Services. Drew Gidlof has arranged for the vocational outing. I was invited to their open house last month and found the facility and their services very interesting. Hope to see all of you there. Remember, no meeting at Club Pheasant this week. Please read the Chips thoroughly as there are many events and dates listed in it. Mark your calendars accordingly. It’s getting to the point there are too many to comprehend and remember as I announce them at the meetings. Thank You and Rotary Up!, Bill

Can You Hear Me Now?
The Rotary Club of Vacoas, Mauritius, wanted to make a splash for its 25th anniversary. Mauritius is a small island nation about 600 miles east of Madagascar, a larger island off the southeast coast of Africa. Mauritius has the densest population in Africa – 614 people per square kilometer (West Sac has 824 people per square kilometer).
What to do? They held SIX events in one week, including free health screenings, parties and community service projects. SPLASH! Even more impressive – at least 20 mem-bers participated in each event.
