The Chinooks lived in the Northwest region of the USA

European Influence

When the Europeans came to the Northwest Coastal region, they traded with the Chinooks.

Other umiaks used to hunt at sea.

wore wooden masks during big celebrations.

Mandan Indians

Food

•The Mandans were farmers.

•Women raised corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers.

•Men hunted deer and small game and took part in seasonal buffalo hunts.

•The Mandans weren't migratory people, so they didn't hunt buffalo as often as other Plains Indian tribes.

Shelter

•Mandan earth lodge: circular (40 to 80 feet in circumference)

•Four center posts held up horizontal cross beams over which were laid thick mattings of willow branches followed by layers of firmly packed earth.

•Lodges overlooking a point where two streams or rivers joined.

•Towns laid out with streets & a central plaza
