INTRODUCTION

A laser can be used instead of spark plug in

ignition system

The laser ignition system can be change the

concept of ignition process

It has may advantages compare to spark plug

By using laser plasma can located any where in the

combustion chamber

Laser doesn't need electrode

And self cleaning

Location of spark plug is flexible

COMPARISON BETWEEN SPARK PLUG AND

LASER IGNITION

Below symmetric diagram shows the comparison

between spark plug and laser ignition.

As shown in fig. (a) in spark plug the plasma is

located at the starting of the nozzle.

And in fig. (b) & (c) the plasma is located anywhere

in the combustion chamber where fig. (c) shows

multiple ignition.

WORKING OF ADVANCED LASER IGNITION

SYSTEM (ALIS)

There is a laser connected to the multiplexer.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controls the fuel flow

rate and power to the Electronic interface.

Multiplexer is used to divide the original laser beam

into several other small laser beam which are

driven to laser plugs.

Optical fiber is used to send the divided laser

beams to the laser plugs.

ADVANTAGES

High power output.

Increase the fuel efficiency.

It increase combustion process and it is eco

friendly.

The plasma is located in anywhere in combustion

chamber

High temperature and pressure does not effect the

performance.

It does not require maintenance to remover carbon

deposits because it is self cleaning.

DISADVANTAGES

Propagation of laser pulse through optic fiber.

Require specially designed combustion chamber is

require

It is costly compare to spark plug ignition system

APPLICATION

According to the latest international reports, Mazda’s

upcoming rotary sports car could feature laser ignition

technology. This would replace the spark plug ignition

system which is currently applied to every petrol car on the market. It’s also a setup which has been

around since 1860.

CONCLUSION

Laser ignition system is very expensive compare to

the spark plug ignition system and now it is ready for

development. But the potential and advantages are

more attractive in many practical application and it

consist many advantages compare to the spark plug

ignition process
