VAL WILLIAMS AWARDED THE

MARV WHITE AWARD – excerpted from John Earl’s tribute.

The Marv White Award recognizes an individual based on Sportsmanship, Volunteerism, Curling Prowess, Mentorship, out-of-club Ambassadorship and the person’s overall commitment to making our Club better.

This year’s winner is one of our “unsung heroes”, always there but never in the limelight – always the backstop ready to jump in and catch the juggling balls as they start to fall. Something this person has done many times. At most functions this person is quietly busy doing whatever jobs that need to be done.

Over the more than 40 years at the Club this person has held a variety of positions, both at the Board level and at the League level – helping to ensure our members get their best experience and helping to guide our Club’s decisions.

No, this person hasn’t won a World Championship, but there are many here who consider it to have been a privilege to have been on the same team. If you have ever had to play against her (there is your first clue) you know you had to play well to win.

You may not recognize her as the person who carries the team, but more likely you will recognize her as the driving force who has carried/directed/encouraged/ supported and scolded someone who has been active on numerous Ching Boards.

A colleague quite appropriately described her as a friend, teammate, advocate, promoter and a voice of reason. And I am told by her friends a favourite saying is, “you have to be a good friend to have good friends".

She has the patience of Job, a heart of gold, the temper of a lioness, a quick wit, friendly smile and she has put up with and defended a cantankerous partner when most of us would have left him lying on the ice.

Many of you will now have guessed this year’s Marv White Award winner is Valerie Williams.

Val, we are so grateful to have you as a member of Ching. You are always there when we need someone and your wisdom and skill has helped indirectly guide our Club over the years.

FROM THE PAST PREZ … - Paul Williams, Past President It is hard to believe that our season is over, and especially as this was our 44th season. We officially ended our

season on Sunday April 22th with our “Skate off” at 12:30 – although it was such a lovely day outside that I think most people preferred to be out in the sunshine than skating on curling ice!

At 1 p.m. the Mixed League held their AGM and at 2 p.m. we held the Board AGM. We began the club’s AGM meeting with presentations to outgoing members of the Board. We recognized Ray Hussain (in absentia!) for his 16 years on the Board, as he was curling with his sister in the Mixed Doubles in Sweden. Pat Arbuthnot completed his “latest” three year term on the board for a total of 20 years. We presented these gentlemen with a Tim Horton’s Gift Card as a thank you. Laura McIntyre who looks after the Little Rocks and Junior Program is retiring after 16 years and Patricia Keffer retired after 12 years as our Registrar. We presented these ladies with a Spring Bouquet. Al Morris our Treasurer retired after 36 dedicated years of service to the Club as Treasurer. We presented his wife Sandi with a bouquet as a thank you for those Thursday evening Board Meetings when Al was not at home. John Earl made the presentation to Al of a plaque and a card signed by as many members as possible, as well as a cheque in appreciation [See page 3 for the tribute]. We thank all of them for their dedication to Chinguacousy Curling Club.

Reid Carpenter, Recreation Supervisor for Chinguacousy Park which includes our facility, was present to speak about City items. He started off by talking about the availability of practice ice for next season. At the moment there will be two sheets of ice prepared on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night at 9 p.m. There will also be ice available some mornings prior to 9 a.m. However, details have still to be worked out, as well as the availability of ice weekday afternoons. We will update you as days of the week, and times are finalized.

There was quite a lengthy discussion about the conditions of our ice this season, and Reid certainly got a feel for how dis satisfied our membership were. And that expectations are high for an improvement next season.

The bar was also a topic for discussion and Carmona was on hand to answer those questions. One item of unfinished business was the CurlON Membership discussion and vote. After our last all-members

meeting there was a series of emails back and forth between the Directors of CurlON and the Board. We invited 3 of the CurlON Directors to meet with us at our Board Meeting in April. It was a very productive meeting – an hour and a half. And now CurlON has a better appreciation for our Club and how we operate. They have committed to working with us and are currently putting together a plan outlining how they might do that. After this meeting, your Board decided that we should give them the opportunity to do this, and therefore it is the Board’s recommendation that we continue our membership in CurlON. The membership were asked if they wanted to vote on our staying as a member of CurlON and in light of the above, the membership felt a vote was not necessary. Once the Board has had a chance to review and discuss the CurlON plan we will share the information with the members.

At the AGM I forgot to thank those dedicated members of our club who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our Club running so well. Without our volunteers there would not be a vibrant, successful Club.

I want to thank the Board and membership for allowing me the opportunity to be your President once more and I look forward to working with the new Board as Past President.

On a personal note they say behind every successful man is a good woman and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work and support I received from Valerie over this past season.

TRIBUTE TO AL MORRIS – excerpted from John

Earl’s tribute Many of you won’t know this, but Al Morris is

stepping down as our Treasurer. How does one describe and recognize someone like Al in a few words. So, I thought, let’s have a little fun with him

Al Morris – was he or was he not an ‘Original Member’ – yes or no – I believe he was [His wife, Sandi, is a chartered member, but not Al]. If not, he has been around here since the earliest of days and he has been a pivotal member of this Club since those early days. Throughout that time he has actively and enthusiastically given of his time and energy to make this Club successful. Wait, Did I just describe Al as active and enthusiastic? Those are two words that I am not sure jump to mind every time someone describes

Al. But seriously, over the years, Al hasn’t been the one who uses his loudest voice to dominate a conversation. Quiet, thoughtful, considerate and yet observant, focussed, assured and determined to make the numbers all add up.

Al has been our Club’s one and only Treasurer not because he wanted fame and recognition. He

has been our one and only Treasurer because he knew he was the best person for the job and that his contribution would be appreciated – even if unrecognized. When it came to the financial health of this Club no one could have taken better care of us than Al.

I’m going to conclude these remarks on a serious note. Al, you and I have shared the growing, maturing and enduring years at this Club. Many of the people here today have also been part of this Club’s journey. Almost everyone here has played a part in making Ching what it is. But NO ONE - NO – ONE – has made a contribution any bigger than yours.

Thank you for all your years as our Treasurer. Thank you for your years of conservative counsel. And most of all, thank you for being such a dedicated volunteer -- helping make Ching a better Club.

CurlON/ TCA REPORT - Ray Husain Once again, it was my pleasure to serve on the

Chinguacousy Curling Club Executive this past season in the role of CurlON/TCA Representative.

The 2017-18 CurlON season unfortunately finished with Ching only being represented in one event at the beginning of the season, the Traveler’s Club Championship. Team Earl and Team Diamond represented us in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively at the Provincial Qualifying Zone event in Orangeville. On a year-to-year basis, we had nine entries for the 2016-17 season at CurlON events compared to this season’s two.

No matter which way our membership decides to move forward with the club’s membership in CurlON, I am optimistic that a viable solution can be achieved between both parties to work towards a future that is mutually beneficial for all involved.

In Toronto Curling Association play, we had teams participate in a number of the events offered by the TCA. While our club did not come away with any banners, the representation at the TCA level was outstanding. Special mention should go to Patricia Keffer who won the TCA Open Day Women’s Championship banner with her York Curling Club team. Congratulations Patricia!

As always, I encourage each member no matter which skill level you are to participate in some form of competition, whether it is a club bonspiel or a CurlON or TCA competition. The benefits of competing outside of our club are great, such as making new friends, seeing a new community, and learning about different conditions and strategies.

As I step aside from the Executive, I would like to thank everyone for the support over the years here at Ching. It has been an immense honour and pleasure to serve the club, and I thank you for the opportunity. Wishing everyone a great summer!

Note from Trudy Burnside: - Congratulations to Sarah Bailey for representing Ontario at the U18 Nationals in New Brunswick. Sarah is the daughter of Steve & Lisa Bailey & her team is representing the Listowel CC. They just missed out on the Bronze medal. Also, congratulations to a former member Jeanette Burnside for winning a Bronze medal at the USport Competition in Leduc, AB with Brock University & for being named MVP of the Brock Curling team.

YOUTH REPORT - Laura McIntyre The 2017-2018 Youth Curling League brought us 22 registered curlers comprised of Little Rockers, Bantam and

young youth curlers. This year our program had many theme Sunday’s including Bring a Friend Day, Bring a Family Member or Two and a Game Day with all curlers participating,

Chinguacousy Youth League also participated in the CurlOn Hit Tap Draw Competition which had two little rockers qualify to go to the finals in Huntsville. These two Little Rockers were Michael Sparks and Aiden Ally who both finished with a 5th and 6th place respectively – amazing showing for both these boys. They came back from Huntsville and said they had a “TERRIFIC TIME”.

The Little Rock Achievement Award was given to Aiden Ally for his sportsmanship, respect for others and a true love for the game. Congratulations Aiden. This year I honoured one of my youth curlers for her outstanding volunteer work and helping with the Little Rock program all season long. Morgan Reynolds was the recipient of a $50 gift card for Chapters and a special Volunteer Pin for always being at the club and ready to go to sheet I where I needed her the most – congratulations Morgan!!!

The youth program cannot be successful without the many volunteers who come out every week for the Sunday Program – thank you to Steve, Zena, Pearl and the many parents that came out to help if asked. Our theme days could not be successful without the help of those volunteers as well as the parents who always donated treats to eat after these special days.

A big THANK YOU to the Chinguacousy Executive for always supporting me and allowing me to run this fantastic youth program at Chinguacousy.

Note from Zena Colontonio: - Congratulations to Michael, Jonathan, Thomas and Parker for their 3 game winning streak in the Hamilton & Area Curling Association Harry Clark Memorial Little Rock Bonspiel to land them in the Flight A Finals, only to have a loss to Team Tardiff, and take home the 2018 First Event

Runner Up medals. They played really well as a team and had fun! And a huge thanks to Pamela for organizing this for us!!

In the TCA Interclub League, Matthew Sparks, representing Ching, teamed up with Parker Fung-Ernst (Oakville), Thomas Meulien, Jonathan Blais & Michael Sparks to curl all season against other clubs. They tied for 5th place but after winning both games at the Finals Day competition, won a 3rd place overall.

DAYTIME DOUBLES The Daytime Open and Day Ladies’ League held their first ever Daytime

Doubles mini-bonspiel to find out what it was like to play this new format for curling. Of course, because of various reasons (getting down is easy, getting up is not!), the rules were modified, especially sweeping after delivering. There were 36 curlers who made many shots that would be worthy of Olympic gold. In the end, Ching’s gold winners for the first draw was Nina Szymanska & May Dickinson and the gold winners for the second draw was Dale Matheson & Bev Kyro. The positive comments after the games were very encouraging & showed the appreciation for the new format.

Many thanks go to John Earl, Ray Hussain & Al Freeman who helped out with the draw & guided the curlers on-ice with the rules.

DID YOU KNOW THAT … Ray Husain & Anna Hussain travelled to Sweden to compete in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.

Representing Guyana, Ray & flag-bearer Anna finished 5th in their pool which was good enough to be 24th overall for the tournament out of 40 countries. Next year it will be in Stavanger, Norway, April 20-27, 2019.

DAY LADIES REPORT - Valerie Williams Well it’s hard to believe that the Curling Season is now over, did anyone else think it was a very fast season? These last few weeks of the curling season have been busy for us all. But especially for Audrey Greenwood

who participated in two bonspiels with two different teams. On March 15th she was at Guelph Curling Club for their Irish Spiel with her team of Elaine Burroughs, Mary Coyle and Linda Ciardullo. On March 17th she was at Alliston Curling Club for their Irish Spiel with her team of Helen Stennett, Nina Szymanska and Christine Eustis. They had a 1 and 1 finish at both Spiels, there was good curling and good friendship.

Not to be outdone, Juli Roslin with Lynda Earl, Laurie James & Dianne Andrews went to Richmond Hill and won both games to win their draw. Unfortunately, a team on the other draw had more points for the Trophy. This is a very well-run & hospitable bonspiel & should be considered for next year.

We ended our season on Tuesday, March 20th with a Daytime Doubles Game [see Page 4] and then our Annual General Meeting. Once the meeting was over we all enjoyed a Pot Luck Lunch.

Thanks to all the ladies who have volunteered to serve as your Executive for the upcoming season. The list is on the back page. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Margaret Lea and Nina Szymanska for their time on the Executive.

At our AGM we discussed which charity to support with the proceeds from our Miss Hogline “Piggy Bank” It was decided we would make a donation to Youth without Shelter in Brampton. Several members were very generous and ‘topped up’ the amount collected over the season.

The winners of the 4th and final series were the team of Ruth Hay; Shelley Brannen, Pat Schroeder (even though she did not play because of injuries!) and Jeanne Gray.

We held our annual Spring Thaw Bonspiel on Wednesday and Thursday April 4th and 5th and once again this event was an overwhelming success. The theme this year was “Diamonds and Denim” and the decorations

made for around the club were amazing. The various committees which were created did an outstanding job, from décor, food, entertainment. When I was at the Club on Thursday evening for the trophy presentations, several ladies expressed what a great time they had had, saying they were going back to their Clubs to tell everyone what a great Spiel it was, and said they would definitely be back next year and bring another team from their Club with them! Kudos to Diana Cardoni & all those who helped make this bonspiel a resounding success.

The overall winner of the Bonspiel was Chris Nowak’s team from Acton, she fought a very close game with her opponent from Milton. Her team of Erin Britnell; Dianne Trask (Acton Curling Club member) and Joyce Fung – sparing for

Sonia Mota who unfortunately was ill. Chris’ team was presented with the Indian Head Trophy sponsored by Al Morris, Chartered Accountant.

The season came officially to a close on Tuesday April 12th with our year-end banquet, the Daytime Open League also joined us for this event. Thanks to Nina Szymanska for a wonderful job of organizing this banquet, the food was excellent. A special thanks to Doreen Thompson for stepping in and being our Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening as Nina was away on vacation. Thank you for the great job Doreen. It is at the banquet where prizes are given out to all of the series winners and also where the All Star Teams are announced. These individuals will have their names on the Championship Board at ice level next season.

INSTRUCTIONAL CLINICS – Juli Roslin Besides the monthly Review Clinics, the opening week practice time with instruction was much appreciated. Look on the website next season to see what clinics will be set up for the fall. Kudos to all the instructors who gave of their time & expertise in helping out this season. We couldn’t have done it without ya!

DAYTIME OPEN LEAGUE - Valerie Williams The Daytime Open League joined with the Day Ladies League on Tuesday

March 20th for the Daytime Doubles Game, Annual General Meeting followed by the Pot Luck Lunch.

The 4th and final series winners in this league were Joe Bodhaine; Margaret

Lea; Sharon Felice and Steve Ward. The Daytime Open League finished their season at the Annual Banquet

organized by the Day Ladies League. After a successful year our winning draw teams received their awards and the All Star Team members were announced. Congratulations go to: Joe Bodhaine (Skip), Diane Rosehart (Vice), Ruth Whitbread (Second) & Murray Gingrich (Lead). The team pictured above, received All Star Pins, names placed on the All Star Plaque and on the Championship Board which will be positioned on the ice.

Just a note to mention that next year the Friend for a Day Bonspiel will be hosted by Brampton Curling Club. I hope you all have a happy, healthy and safe summer and we will see you back at the Club in October.

MEN’S REPORT – Dave Kussman Regular Season Play: Due to the decline in numbers we elected to use a new format. For the most part the

format was successful, however based on feedback from members we have an opportunity to improve the format next year. We had 32 registered teams in the Men's Division (128 players). We are able to use all 6 sheets for our Monday and Tuesday 6:45 draw, however only use 2 sheets for the 9:00 draw. We recognize the decline in numbers is getting to a critical stage… and we may lose some of our timeslots. This season’s Club Champions are Todd Dakers with Ryan Pearce, Dave Pritchard & Jason Sunderland. Team Rosengren (Skip – Ron Rosengren, Vice – Howard Steele, Second – Mark Meacoe and Lead – Bill Jackson) won the Grand Aggregate as the highest point team for both nights!

Bonspiels (Oscar's and Wind-Up): We scheduled two bonspiels throughout the year. In November we held our Oscar's Bonspiel, we had 16 teams entered. While we could not fill the spiel, overall the event was considered a success. We had positive feedback from outside and inside teams. Our second Bonspiel is the annual Men's Wind-Up. The eventual winners were Team Scott Hodgson from Ching. Another successful event!

Fun Activities (2-on-2 and Skills Competition): We planned two fun activities. Our usual 2-on-2 night scheduled for December. We had 48 participants and the event was a great way for our players to have a relaxing fun night. In March we had our second fun night, a Skills Competition. We had 6 events (one per sheet) over two nights with 50 participants. We would have liked to have more members join, but it was over the March break and we were not overly surprised at the low numbers.

Men's Executive Outgoing: Our Past President – David Kusturin has now completed his 3 year tenure. I wanted to thank Dave for his support. Dave is always very quick to respond to questions and provided tremendous feedback and guidance when needed. Dave played a key role in helping us manage the 2017 / 18 season and the two seasons previous to that!

Our Bonspiel Coordinator – David Duff is moving on. Dave played a key role in the success of our bonspiel over the past few years. There is so much to do when organizing a bonspiel and Dave makes it look easy. In the last couple of years, we have all learned something from Dave and hope to keep the momentum going for next year. Thanks to both Dave's!!!

The position of Bonspiel Coordinator is currently open and we will gladly accept volunteers. Men's AGM Meeting: We had about 40 members show up for our annual Men's AGM. The dialogue was very

good and resulted in some changes and suggestions for improvement for next season. Thanks to all who showed up and for your support throughout the year! Hope to see you all back next year, please bring more members… we really need to focus on increasing our membership!

MIXED REPORT – Meagan Trevail The

2017/2018 season was a successful one! It is hard to believe that it is all over for

another year. This year we had full draws on Thursday, Friday at 7 and Friday at 9, while Sunday night had 8

teams. Thank you to all those who stepped up to fill our back-end positions and in turn made room for some new members.

We hope that our new members

enjoyed themselves and look forward to seeing them back next season.

Our Finals Night had a fantastic turnout yet again, and congratulations to all the teams who took part, and to those teams who won

their respective events. Big congratulations go to our new Club Champions, Paul and Shelley Brannen with Jack and Heather McNulty.

Our final bonspiel of the year, the Spring Mixed, was very successful and a great way to end the season. Thank you to all the teams who entered, and the sponsors for their generosity. Congratulations to our winners: Main Event: Tom Dunlop, Sue Dunlop, Lucas Dunlop and Tracey Chiasson; 2nd Event: Ian Wingrove, Nancy Borsato, Max Marentette, Roselle Marentette; 3rd Event: Michael McGaugh, Emily Walsh, Tim McGaugh, Cathy Diamond. I hope that everyone enjoys their summer and I look forward to another great season next year!

BUSINESS WOMEN'S REPORT - Frances Pritchard

We have had feedback from our members stating that after a few years of our draw & playoff format, it’s time for something new. We have opted for a longer round robin, with all teams playing each other at least once, before moving into playoff play. Members feel that this is better for the social aspect of our league, which the majority of our league agreed with at our AGM. This will all be dependent on our registration and numbers next year, but our new format will be dependent on having 16 teams once again.

As with all the other leagues, the start of our season was delayed. This impacted our ability to recruit teams for our Krystal Bonspiel which usually runs in October. Our executive felt that it was necessary to postpone our bonspiel until the New Year. We did a bit of fundraising on our own in the form of ‘Share the Wealth’ draws that helped carry us through the first half of our season.

Postponing the bonspiel until January proved to be the best decision for our league this year. Tracey Chiasson and her team planned, organized, and ran a very successful event. We were up teams from the previous year and raised enough money to host our wine and cheese night, our banquet, and get a new President’s plaque for the league. Team Chiasson has agreed to stay on as our Bonspiel Coordinators for next year and the league agreed that hosting the event in January again next year is better than trying October again.

On March 28th we had our Wine and Cheese night to celebrate our season and cheer on the ladies playing in the final games. Our Grand Aggregate winners were Team Diamond, A Division and Club Champions were repeat winners, Team Trevail, B Division winners were Team Nowak, C Division winners were Team Chiasson, and D Division winners were Team Goodfellow.

On April 11th we held our AGM and Banquet, put on by our Past President Meagan Trevail, who we thank for her three year commitment to our league executive. At our AGM we discussed new business that I mentioned earlier, mostly format change, and then we elected our Executive for next year [See page 8]. Kathy Hay & Christina MacLean won the Elora Ladies invitational March 3rd. Lots of fun & meat for the freezer.
