Plant trees for air station’s Public Lands Day at TrumanFROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Youngsters of all ages are invited to play in the dirt and spruce
up the beach at Truman Annex with approximately 100 native plants and trees Nov. 14 in honor of Naval Air Station Key West’s 4th annual National Public
Lands Day.“We received a DoD leg-
acy grant to plant native trees and plants on Truman Annex,” said NAS Key West Environmental Director Ed Barham. “The requirement is to plant native vegeta-tion and make it accessible to people. We will provide some native habitat to attract native wildlife, in this case butterflies and birds, and it’s in a loca-tion where people living on Truman Annex will be able to enjoy the scenery.”
Barham said that vol-unteers will plant green buttonwoods, geiger trees, native palms and various butterfly-attracting plants near the Open Source Center on Truman Annex.
All gardeners are invited to participate in the event, which will begin at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine, and will end around noon. Water, gloves and sunscreen will be provided.

A note from the School Liaison Officer
What do you fear?
Fear of public speaking is reported to be the num-ber one fear of American
adults. It is called “glossopho-bia.” When I am near a podi-um I get to see the trembling hands and shaking knees of some speakers. Regardless of age or rank, it seems those who have little public speak-ing experience, or who are ill prepared, suffer the most. It can be a lonely place up in front of a crowd. Fear of pub-lic speaking is worse than the fear of death some say; how-ever, I believe that to be an exaggeration. Nevertheless, both speaking and death put us center stage.
Fear is an emotional response to a real or perceived
threat. I’ve met with Sailors facing disciplinary action for the first time in their careers. They shake with fear thinking about the worst-case scenar-ios. I have also met with folks
who have been d i a g n o s e d with a disease who are fearful and anxious about what the future holds. Fear feeds on uncer-tainty and the unknown.
Fear is a natural
response in the dark places of life. Growing up I remember terrorizing my little brother, 12 years my junior, when the lights went out. In the dark I would reach down from the upper bunk bed and grab him. He would let out a screech
and move to the other side where I would reach down again and get him. He didn’t know where I would strike next. Somehow he turned out normal.
We all go through dark times in life. When David wrote in Psalms 23, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” he was writing from experience. His next words, however, give great hope, “I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” Fear is replaced with courage when we are no longer alone. God’s great promise is that in the dark places of life He offers His presence.
Contemporary Christian Worship continues each Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Truman Annex Chapel where we continue looking at the 23rd Psalm for the next few weeks.

FROM NAVAL AIR STATION KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Powerboat races return to the waterfront at Naval Air Station Key
West’s Truman Annex next week, and active duty service members, retirees, DoD civil-ians and their families will get free admission to the Mole Pier to watch all of the races.
Super Boat International is sponsoring the 29th Annual Key West World Championships Sunday through Nov. 15 at Truman. Under a licensing agreement between NAS Key West and the race promoters for the use of the Navy’s Mole Pier, mili-tary personnel and their fami-lies will have complimentary access to this fast and furious event.
Special agreements between the city of Key West and NAS Key West allow the Mole Pier to be used for events other than those the military deems as operational. License agree-ments exist for the city to use
the Navy pier for cruise ship berthing. Other organizations such as the Southernmost Runners Running Club have used the pier for short periods of time for other local events.
Boats begin arriving to the waterfront Sunday and will parade through the streets of downtown Key West Sunday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m. The actual racing begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. with other races scheduled for 12:30 and 2 p.m. Races will also be held Friday and Sunday at the same posted times.

FROM NAVFAC SOUTHEAST PUBLIC AFFAIRS
As part of the Energy Awareness Month, a group of Naval Air
Station Key West personnel took a tour of the solar photo-voltaic (PV) system at Florida Keys Electric Cooperative (FKEC) in Marathon, Fla., Oct. 21.
“The reason why FKEC is such an attraction is because it has the first grid-tied solar PV array in the Florida Keys and is the second largest in the state of Florida,” said Public Works Department Key West Resource Efficiency Manager Samuel Musora.
The array is capturing the sun’s energy to help power homes and businesses served by FKEC’s Marathon Substation.
“Since solar power is a renewable energy, our inter-est here at NAS Key West is driven by our renewable ener-gy goals set by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007,” stated Musora. The Act
requires that 25 percent of all federal facilities’ electricity consumption must come from renewable sources by 2025. Interim goals of 5 percent by fiscal year (FY) 2010 and 7.5 percent by FY 2013 are also mandated.
In FY 2008, NAS Key West consumed 38,242 megawatt-hours (mwh) of electricity. In order to provide 25 percent of that amount from renew-able sources, 9,561 mwh would need to be derived from renewable sources by FY 2025. Interim requirements are 1,912 mwh by FY 2010 and 2,868 mwh by 2013.
NAS Key West currently uses no mwh of renewable elec-tricity, leaving 1,912 mwh of renewable electricity yet to be obtained in order to meet the FY 2010 goal. Renewable electricity consumption can occur through the installation of renewable generation or through the purchase of green power from a utility provider. NAS Key West’s Renewable Energy Plan addresses a strat-egy for both methods (The
generation through solar PV and the purchase of green power).
The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Installations and Environment) energy pro-gram’s preference is to install renewable energy generation, if economically feasible, before purchasing renewable energy from utility provider.
A $69 million regional American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) contract was awarded June 29 to Atlantic Contingency Constructors, LLC out of Norfolk, Va. NAS Key West will benefit from nearly $10 million for solar PV on 15 buildings. The energy team at NAS Key West has propos-als for an up-to-10 megawatt system at the air station’s property on Fleming Key. The project is currently in design and installation of PVs should start later this fiscal year.
“Other technologies we will be pursuing to meet these goals will be wind power and biomass plants,” said Musora.

Americans have celebrated Veterans Day in honor of all past and present military vet-erans since 1954. Before 1954, Americans called Nov. 11 Armistice Day in commemo-ration of the armistice that
ended fighting in World War I. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs Web site, “…in 1954, after World War II had required the great-est mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organi-zations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word ‘Armistice’ and inserting in its place the word ‘Veterans.’”
In a Veterans Day presi-dential proclamation issued Monday, President Barack Obama called upon Americans to support the day by partici-pating in patriotic activities in their communities.
“On Veterans Day, we honor the heroes we have lost, and we rededicate ourselves to the next generation of veterans by supporting our Soldiers,
Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen as they return home from duty,” said Obama. “Our grateful nation must keep our solemn prom-ises to these brave men and women and their families. They have given their unwav-ering devotion to the American people, and we must keep our covenant with them.”
Around the country, many towns and cities honor vet-erans with parades and cer-emonies, but the ceremony held at the Arlington National Cemetery is considered to be the nation’s official cer-emony. The Annual National Veterans Day Observance will take place in the National Amphitheater at the cemetery, is sponsored by the U.S. Army Military District of Washington and begins at 11 a.m.

U.S. Marines man a float on Duval Street during a parade in the 1950s. The Marine Corps took shape during the American Revolution, when many important political
discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps. A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for indepen-dence at sea and on shore. The resolution was approved on Nov. 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines. Each year, the Marine Corps marks Nov. 10 with a celebration of the brave spirit which compelled these men and thousands since to defend our country as U.S. Marines.

FROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Rarely in sports do you get an opportunity to test an age old cliché,
and the Oct. 24 night under the lights on the rugby pitch at Sigsbee Annex was an oppor-tunity not lost. In a closely-fought match, pitting the veteran rugby players of Key West against the young ath-letes of Naval Air Station Key West, the old adage, “youth and skill is no match for age and treachery” was tested.
While on the surface the “friendly” match was cordial and amiable, the NAS side was out to prove their met-tle, which was evident by an open-field first tackle made by NAS team captain Jeremy Thompson, setting the tone for the balance of the match. Many rugby newcomers were in attendance and they surely got a taste of the combination of violence and respect, typi-cally found and required on any rugby pitch.
The “Old Boys” of Key West Rugby drew first blood and put seven points on the board with a try from Brandon Ames, assistant manager at GFS, and conversion by Mike “Westy” Westerberger. Westy is a vet-eran player, having played for the Chicago Griffins, a territo-rial feeder team for the U.S. National Team.
Thompson followed up with a score of his own for NAS, converting his own try to even the score at 7-7. Thompson was the most experienced player on the pitch for NAS, having grown up in Kenya where he played for the Kenyan Under-19 national team as a teenager. Thompson brought a tremen-dous amount of experience and knowledge to the fledg-ling NASKW Flying Conchs.
Mike Moore of the Old Boys, who made the trip down from the mainland, scored. The conversion was missed, mak-ing it 12-7. Daniel Hunter, a
Department of the Navy (DoN) civilian, displayed world-class speed and agility by beating all comers to the corner and cutting back to the center with a nifty move to beat the last defender and centering the ball for an easy conver-sion by Army Special Forces Underwater School instruc-tor Staff Sgt. Steve Coleman. Halftime score, 14-12.
In the second half, in a blow to NAS’ team morale, Thompson came out of the match with a game-ending injury. AW2 Chris Watson took the captaincy, leading from the front by scoring the next try and putting NAS up 19-12. Watson’s stellar leadership on the field for the balance of the match ensured the victory.
Hard hits, solid rugby and flaring tempers accompanied the back and forth scoring that ended at 24-17 in favor of NAS Key West.
Steve Lynch, the coach of the NAS team and President of the Key West Rugby Football Club, couldn’t say enough about how proud he was of the NAS team and what a great match it was all around.
“They proved that hard work and consistent attendance at practice pays off,” said Lynch. “Every rugby player on both sides today played tough, I am lucky to be a part of the rugby culture and this team. I want to thank Joel Dos Santos for refereeing an excellent match and the committee; Billy
McDonough, Mike Spontak, Barry Geary, Steve Coleman and Mike Price for their sup-port in putting this event together.”
Lynch went on to say, “Jill Lynch, Evans Auguste and the MWR staff provided a great venue and incredible support for this exhibition match, I hope it was enjoyed by all who attended.”
The two sides will rejoin forces as a combined Key West Rugby team to prepare for their next match, Saturday at 6 p.m. at home against Naples. The match will be at the Sigsbee ball field. Call Lynch at 797-1135 for more information.

ACC (AW) Duane Daugherty, Naval Air Station Key West’s next command fitness leader (CFL), checks form as Sailors perform the push-up portion of the test Wednesday at the Boca Chica Gym. The PRT is held twice a year across the Navy to ensure Sailors are fit for duty, and it includes a sit-reach, curl-ups, push-ups and a 1.5-mile run.

said Vice Adm. Mark Ferguson, chief of naval personnel.
After complete review of 5,686 eligible active duty and full-time-support candidates, the board selected 5,528 mem-bers for continuation.
According to the precept, which outlines what infor-mation board members may or may not consider from a record, documented miscon-duct and substandard per-formance were the primary reasons a Sailor would not be selected for continued service.
Some examples include “sig-nificant problems” or “progress-ing” promotion recommenda-tions, declining performance
from the same reporting senior, failure to maintain physical fit-ness assessment standards, mil-itary or civilian convictions, and non-judicial punishment.
Members not selected for continuation will retire no later than June 30.
“There were chiefs with adverse information in their records, and many of them are staying. That, in itself, should tell any doubters that there was no quota, and that we are not a zero defect Navy. People make mistakes. Often times, it’s how we respond after those mistakes that defines us as chiefs, as Sailors and as lead-ers in our Navy,” said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/SW) Rick West.
The board concluded delib-erations at Navy Personnel
Command Oct. 1 and the results were forwarded to CNP for approval. Sailors not selected for continuation were personally notified prior to the results posting in BUPERS Online. Candidates can check their status at https://www.bol.navy.mil.
“The purpose of this board was to continue to improve the effectiveness of the force by identifying and continuing our most fully qualified enlisted leaders. I appreciate the leader-ship of the CPO mess in this pro-cess,” Ferguson commented.
The Senior Enlisted Continuation Board is a per-formance-driven review of master chiefs, senior chiefs and chiefs with more than 20 years of service and three years time-in-grade.
