Chinese Second Language 2008–2010 Written examination – End-of-year Examination Specifications Overall conditions The examination will be sat at a time and date to be set annually by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. There will be 15 minutes reading time and 2 hours writing time. VCAA examination rules will apply. Details of these rules are published annually in the VCE and VCAL Administrative Handbook. The examination will be marked by a panel appointed by the VCAA. The examination will contribute 50 per cent to the Study Score. The examination consists of two components: the oral component (25%) and the written component (75%). The following details refer solely to the written component. Content All outcomes from Units 3 and 4 will be assessed, except for Outcome 3, Unit 3 and task 2(b) of Outcome 2, Unit 4. Approved materials and equipment Students will be permitted to bring into the examination: pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, sharpeners, rulers and any printed monolingual and/or bilingual dictionary in one or two separate volumes. Format The examination will be in the form of a question and answer book. The written examination will consist of three sections. Section 2: Reading, responding and translatingSection 2 will consist of three parts: A, B and C. In each part, printed Chinese texts related to one or more of the prescribed themes will be provided as stimulus material for questions. All questions must be answered.Part A will provide questions in English for response in English.Part B will provide questions in English and Chinese for response in Chinese.Part C will require translation from Chinese characters into English.The total length of text in Part A and Part B will be 250–350 characters.The total length of text for translation in Part C will be 150–250 characters.Each of the parts will have a total of 15 marks.

Section 3: WritingFive optional writing tasks will be offered from which students will select one.Tasks will be related to the prescribed themes.The tasks will be provided in English and Chinese for response in Chinese.The student will write a response of 200–250 characters in Chinese.The writing task will have a total of 20 marks.

AdviceThe VCE study, Chinese Second Language, has been revised for implementation in Units 3 and 4 in 2008.During the 2008–2010 accreditation period for VCE Chinese Second Language, examinations will be prepared according to the Examination Specifi cations above. Each examination will conform to these specifi cations and will test a representative sample of the key knowledge and skills.The examination criteria will be published in the 2008 LOTE Assessment Handbook.The changes from the 2007 Chinese Second Language examination are outlined as follows:Changed weightings for all sections of the examination are set out in the following table.

• The number of texts and the total listening time for the texts for both parts of Section 1 have been considerably reduced.

• The total number of characters for the reading passages in Section 2, Reading and responding, Parts A and B, is 250–350 characters.

• The addition to Section 2 of Part C, Translating, is a major departure from the structure of the 2007 examination. The total length of text for translation in Part C is 150–250 characters.

Character listIt should be noted that the requirement to gloss words or phrases with which students are not familiar has been removed from the study design. Students can expect to fi nd some commonly used characters that do not appear in the character list in the study design. Students are reminded that they are permitted to use any monolingual and/or bilingual dictionary.

TimingThe examination will be a total of 2 hours plus 15 minutes reading time. The recommended times for completion of the sections of the examination are:Section 1: Listening and responding 15 minutesSection 2: Reading and responding 55 minutesSection 3: Writing 50 minutes

The sample examination provides an indication of the type of questions teachers and students can expect on the Chinese Second Language examination during the life of the revised study design. Because this is a limited sample, marks have not been indicated for individual questions.
