Broxtowe Schools Residency Project withAlderman White School and Language College

LING PENG AND MELVYN RAWLINSONBroxtowe Borough Council’s Schools project hasused the ancient Chinese Monkey stories toinspire a unique performance. Musician Ling Pengand Puppeteer Melvyn Rawlinson have workedwith pupils to create large scale puppets and anoriginal sound-scape using traditional Chineseinstruments and percussion.

See the results at both the Beeston Chinese NewYear celebration on Saturday 31 January and atthe Lakeside event on Sunday 1 February.

RONG TAOLAKESIDE CHOREOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCELakeside welcomes the return of Choreographerand Dancer Rong Tao. Professor in Modern DanceChoreography at the Chongqing Meishi FilmAcademy and Artistic Director of the Yuwu DanceProject, this year he will work with visual artistHetain Patel to explore ideas about language andrhythm. He will also be creating a newperformance piece with professional dancers tobe premiered at our outdoor celebrations on 1February, and choreographing a short piece withsome of Déda’s (Derby Dance’s) youth dancers.

DANCERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTOPPORTUNITY WITH RONG TAONottinghamshire County Council are supportingthe opportunity for two trained dancersliving/working in Nottinghamshire to gainprofessional development experience workingalongside Rong Tao between 19 and 31 January,making a new piece of dance which will bepremiered at the 1 February event. HUI-CHEN LINLAKESIDE VISUAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCEHui-Chen Lin (Annie) took up her new post asVisual Artist-in Residence at Lakeside inNovember 2008 for 12 months. Annie initiallytrained in Taiwan where she learned traditionalforms of eastern painting which she hassubsequently translated into a contemporaryform. Hui-Chen Lin will be running someworkshops using origami and calligraphy on 3 and18 January. See Workshops page for details andbooking information.

BINGHAM CHINESE CULTURAL DAYRushcliffe Borough Council and Rushcliffe RaceAwareness Forum will be celebrating the ChineseNew Year with a free family Cultural Day inBingham’s Market Place.

The event will include demonstrations oftraditional Chinese crafts and music as well asfree food tasters and displays. The event will befollowed by an exhibition on the history ofChinese New Year at Bingham Library from 19thJanuary - 2nd February.

Nottingham - Ningbo, Sister City LinkTHE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM AND NINGBO Last summer the first cohort of Chinese students who began their studies in 2005 received their degreesin a historic graduation ceremony at the Ningbo campus. Student numbers have grown to 3,700 frommore than 50 nations.

September 2008 saw the opening of CSET - the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies, wherecutting-edge research will be carried out into sustainable construction and energy technology to helpChina and the rest of the world to meet the challenges of climate change. October saw the announcementof a new collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Ningbo government toestablish the Research Centre in International Finance. The Leverhulme Centre for Research onGlobalisation and Economic Policy was launched in November, and in March 2009 an inter-campuscollaboration between the Institute of Film and Television Studies and the Division of InternationalCommunications will result in Digital China, Digital Hollywood (see page 6).
