The year 2009 indeed was a very significant year for Vietnam. Thecountry faced many difficulties under the heavy impacts of the global fi-nancial crisis and economic slowdown. Recognizing the difficulties, theGovernment of Vietnam has adjusted the macroeconomic policy objectivesfrom giving priority on inflation curbing to actively preventing the eco-nomic recession, maintaining the economic growth and ensuring the socialwelfare. Therefore, Vietnam has been able to achieved important and posi-tive outcomes and her position in the international arena continues to im-prove.

The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.32 per cent, exceeding the 5 per cent target set by the National Assembly. Total exportturnover in 2009 reached 56.6 billion USD, a fall by 9.7 per cent on year-on-year basis.

Thanks to the political, social and macro-economic stability, total in-vestment capital for development in 2009 reached approximately 38 bil-lion USD, accounting for 42.8 per cent of GDP, an increase of 15.3 percent compared with 2008.

A policy highlighted in 2009 was the focus on social welfare and carefor the poor. The Government is promulgated many poverty reduction andsocial welfare policies.

Notwithstanding the above advantages, Vietnam still faces many diffi-culties and challenges in 2010 such as impacts of the global economic re-cession in 2009, risky operation of financial system, risk of high inflation, and the competitiveness of economy in general and of enterprises in par-ticular remains low.

In order to successfully perform the target of sustainable economicgrowth in 2010, Vietnam will comprehensively implement a set of mea-sures with a focus on improving business and investment environment, enhancing the macro-economy’s stability, focusing on the development ofagriculture and rural areas, focusing on the development of the social ar-eas, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of State governance andmaintaining socio-political stability. — MNA

“On the financial front, China has a very high levelof reserves to withstand volatility in capital flows andthe exposure of European banks in the country is verylimited,” said Shen Minggao, head of China researchat Citigroup.

“But China’s exports might face serious tests, asthe debt crisis in the eurozone is at risk of spilling overto the US, another big trade partner for China,” Shensaid. Europe is now China’s largest trade partner andexport destination, accounting for 20 percent of thecountry’s total exports.

Man dies of uterine cancer linked to transplant

The snails' are useful "models" in the study oflearning and memory -- INTERNET

WASHINGTON, 28 May -- In an unusual experi-ment, scientists have usedpond snails to study theeffects of methampheta-mine, better known ascrystal meth, on the brain. They discovered that thedrug enhanced the crea-tures' abilities to learn andremember a task. Thisgives insight into howsome addictive drugs pro-duce memories that arehard to forget, and that caneven cause addicts to re-lapse.

The scientists de-scribed the discovery inthe Journal of Experimen-

tal Biology. Barbara Sorgfrom Washington StateUniversity in the US ledthe research team. Sheexplained that the snailsprovided a "simplemodel" enabling scientststo examine the effects ofdrugs on an individualbrain cell.

"These drugs of abuseproduce very persistentmemories," explained DrSorg. "It's a learning proc-ess -- drug addiction islearning unwittingly. "Allof these visual, environ-mental and odour cues arebeing paired with thedrug. So addicts might be

able to kick their habit ina treatment centre, butwhen they return to theirold haunts, all those cuestrigger craving and re-lapse."

The ultimate question, said Dr Sorg, is why is itso hard to forget thesememories? To take thefirst step in answeringthat question, she and herteam examined the ef-fects of crystal meth onthe snails, by comparingthe performance ofdrugged and "un-drugged" snails in a sim-ple breathing task. -
