Chinese Community Center 2018 Lunar New Year Festival On Saturday, February 17, 2018, the Chinese Community Center (CCC) will present its annual Lunar New Year Festival, a full-day event featuring a wide variety of cultural and family activities to welcome in the Year of the Dog. An annual tradition in Houston’s Chinatown since 2003, the festival celebrates both the Chinese New Year and the beauty of Houston’s vast cultural diversity. Festival Main Stage The main attraction of the Lunar New Year Festival, the Main Stage features a full day of performances from across the cultural spectrum, ranging from traditional Chinese, Mongolian, Indian, Polynesian, and Mexican music and dance, to martial arts demonstrations from China and Japan. No celebration would be complete without a series of Lion and Dragon dances to welcome in the Chinese New Year, and these dances are featured throughout the day on the Main Stage. The Festival’s Opening Ceremony is also held on the Main Stage, where city officials, board members, community leaders, and sponsors kick off the day’s celebrations together. Kids’ Zodiac and Culture Crafts Corners An area designated to showcasing the traditional significance of the community’s Asian heritage, the Kids’ Zodiac Corner and the Culture Crafts Corner provide opportunities for the whole family to engage in cultural activities and crafts, such as calligraphy and origami, and learn about the significance of each animal in the Chinese Zodiac. Outdoor Marketplace This outdoor marketplace features more than 50 different vendors, showcasing the area’s best restaurants and local businesses, corporate sponsors, and community partners. This unique gathering is a must-see for all visitors. Everyone at the festival can enjoy a diverse array of fantastic Asian cuisine, fun games and vendor giveaways. 2017 LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVAL More than 14,000 visitors joined the Chinese Community Center in welcoming in the Year of the Rooster, a record attendance for the event. Congressman Al Green, State Representative Gene Wu, Mayor Sylvester Turner, CCC’s Board, corporate sponsors, and many others highlighted the day’s Opening Ceremony. The event showcased 17 distinguished performers, including the Shaolin Wushu Cultural Center, Golden Peacock Dance School, Anjali School of Dance, the Soaring Phoenix, and Mariachi Imperial. The Outdoor Bazaar featured more than 50 vendors, including local restaurants, corporate partners, local nonprofit organizations, and other community partners.
