How to achieve 50% CAGRin emerging markets over 5 years

Key markets to succeed - China and India (sales growth and volume)

China - the biggest market in the world, slower growth from now due to government policies but still high

Toyota - the largest manufacturer in the world in 2010, now losing its position to VW and GM

Where is Toyota?

No. 1 world manufacturer is not in top 10 in the biggest market!!!Does Toyota have the right products in China?

Page 12: China Cars

Toyota in China - products

17 models (excluding Lexus) Rather luxurious, only 5 of them below

$30,000!!! Big difference from the top 10… Camry – middle class in the US, high-end

in China A new small car designed specifically for

China to be launched in 2013 – rather late! approximately US$12,000 (Etios in India launched in

Dec 2010 – also late…)

Page 13: China Cars

Toyota in China – other issues

Promotion issues – weak in magazines Dealerships – relatively luxurious service:

check in, greeting by name, automatically playing piano, leather sofas, free coffee, internet access…

Weak partners for joint ventures with local manufacturers : China FAW Group - state-owned enterprise, difficult to work

with Guangzhou Automobile Group – not among the top

manufacturers GM partnered with SAIC - a premier auto manufacturer with

international ambitions

Page 14: China Cars

Outlook

VW – investing $13.8 billion by 2015 GM - current growth of 15% versus the

market growth of 5% (rate of growth revision in October)

Toyota - “We’re not going all out to go as fast as we can in China. We’ve learned a big lesson. We want to be careful.”

(Karl Schlicht, head of the global product and marketing division at Lexus)

Toyota is too cautious…

Page 15: China Cars

Outlook

Low-end car market – lower growth but still good (tax subsidy was lifted)

Middle class – more promising

Suggestions:

Get a low-end car, China specific car quickly.

Improve corporate image. New and better joint venture?
