SmartFish project Background
• SmartFish: EU funded project to strengthen national
and regional fishery/aquaculture policy and strategy
frameworks
– Support participating countries to fulfill international commitment
towards responsible fisheries improve food securitytowards responsible fisheries and to improve food security
• SmartFish Result 1: “Enhance Regional and National
Fisheries and Aquaculture Strategies and Policies”– Component 1M3 aims to “improve knowledge and information in
support to fisheries management processes “
5iMarine Event - 7 March 2014 – FAO-Rome
Harmonization Workshop
(june 2012)
• Aimed to address harmonization issues between the
4 main identified Information System or approach
containing data of interest of management plans
supported by the project: supported by the project:
– WIOFish: a regional knowledge base on West Indian Ocean Fisheries (http://wiofish.bluebox.co.za/)
– FIRMS: an international knowledge base including resources from West Indian Ocean (http://firms.fao.org)
– StatBase: a statistical database containing fishery statistics provided by West Indian Ocean countries (http://statbase1.smartfish.d4science.org/statbase/)
6iMarine Event - 7 March 2014 – FAO-Rome
Harmonization Workshop
(june 2012)• To identify common concepts shared across the
systems/approach including common reference data and classification as common standard for the Regional Information System.
• To identify needs for mapping concepts, defining gateways between the concepts and reference data not matching between the 4 systems.
• To bring together the previous analysis to propose
options for a Regional Information System

Toward a Fisheries Regional Portal
• HW Recommendations:
– Creation of a simple portal (with simple web technologies)
– Embedding iMarine web semantic tools to offer complex
functionalities to the portal: being able to exploit data in a functionalities to the portal: being able to exploit data in a
seamless way with very little data exchanges
Not yet another centralized database

Toward a Fisheries Regional Portal
• Achieved so far:
– Prototype 1: proof of concepts
– Prototype 2: enhanced functionalities and contents with
involvement of the community – user validationinvolvement of the community – user validation
• Now in the process of making the portal public

Enriching iMarine services
iMarine as hosting infrastructure
• Provide portal hosting solution: sustainability and
security
• Provide StatBase hosting solution addressing KMFRI
servers’ instabilities issuesservers’ instabilities issues
• Now in the process on formalizing Service
Agreement Letter with iMarine
12iMarine Event - 7 March 2014 – FAO-Rome
Services from iMarine connectCube
• Indexing and annotation process taking into
consideration each source IS data access and sharing
policies
• Creation of search indexes and search services to • Creation of search indexes and search services to
exploit these search indexes
• Provide a list of results to the user query
the portal embeds these services in a user friendly
way to guide the user in his data search

Enriching iMarine services
• In the process of embedding iMarine web semantics
tool in Chimaera: development of libraries to exploit
the search result
• Working closely with iMarine developers to integrate
the JS libraries to exploit the search result as part of
the gCube to offer a complete solution (from data
indexing to result exploitation)

Conclusion
• Proof of concept validated: this model could
be extended to other databases and
information systems (Regional or national)
• Address the issue of data exchanges but can • Address the issue of data exchanges but can
face problems given restricting data access
and sharing policies
