Constructional design of dedicated screw compressorThe screw compressor is characterized by a very compact design. Compression ProcessAs shown in picture below, during rotation of the rotors the meshing shifts from the suction side to the dis-charge side. The meshing rotors enclose a working space, which is continuously reduced as it moves in the axialdirection. This causes a V-shaped lobe space to form between each of the male and female lobes. This lobe spaceincreases to a maximum size (suction and sealing process). As the rotors rotate further, the new meshing on thesuction side closes the V-shaped lobe space. The lobe space is then constantly reduced by continuous intermeshing of the lobes (compression process).The reduction in lobe space takes place on the lower side of the rotors towards the discharge side.The volume is steadily reduced and it is thereby compressed in the sealed condition. As soon as the peaks of therotor teeth are free to the outlet port, the vapor is discharged to the high-pressure side and flows to the oil sepa-rator where the high-pressure gas will be separated from the lubrication oil. The size and geometry of the dis-charge port determine the so called “internal volume ratio (Vi)” of the compressor. This ratio must have adefined relationship to operate pressure ratio to avoid losses in efficiency due to under or over compression.

Unit performance testingLG began promoting factory performance tests for air-cooled chillers and water-cooled chillers, to show westand behind the products we design and build.The benefits of a performance test include verification of performance, prevention of operational problems, andassurance of a smooth start-up. Only a performance test conducted in a laboratory or laboratory grade facilitywill confirm both performance and operation of a specific chiller.Mostly factory performance tests go smoothly. If a problem occurs, LG personnel easily correct them and chilleris shipped to job site.When a factory performance test is requested, the test can be conducted at the specified, design conditions. Thetest facility has the capability to control ambient test conditions to assure our customers that our chillers will per-form as predicted.

High entering condenser water temperature Option• The High entering condenser water temperature option consists of special control logic to permit High enter-

ing condenser water temperature (Up to 95°F / 35°C) operation.

Wye-delta compressor start type(standard)• For low inrush current and reduced starting torque.

Suction service valves(standard)• Provide a service valve on the suction line of each refrigerant circuit to facilitate compressor servicing.

Flow switch(standard)• Supplied separately to be wired and installed on the evaporator water piping and condenser water piping.

Flooded type evaporator• The flooded type evaporator which have the higher evaporating temperature of refrigerant than direct expan-

sion can increase the performance. The distributor can make the uniform refrigerant flow.

Eco-friendly refrigerant R134a• System designed with Eco-friendly refrigerant R134a which does not harm the ozone layer & protects the

environment.The HCFC (R22) series cannot produce any more from 2020 according to the Montreal Protocol for protectionof ozone layer.

Unit controls of the LGE water cooled screw chiller include following benefits and features.

1. Sequence of controlsWhen the product starts to run, the condenser water pump and chilled water pump run simultaneously. In thesame time, the magnetic valve 1 is turned on for the minimum low capacity operation.Condenser water flow and chilled water flow are also checked a few seconds later after water pump run.In case of having no problem with both water flow, startup delay will be activated. Approximately after oneminute delay outlet temperature of chilled water is checked whether the water temperature is reached upenough to operate the compressor.When the PLC decides to operate the compressor, compressor starts with wye start and then delta start after afew seconds. During the starting process of compressor, while the compressor contactor is checking for prob-lem, the solenoid valve for oil is opened in order to achieve proper oil circulation.After starting process, normal control starts. The normal control include capacity control, refrigerant mid pres-sure control for motor cooling, alarm control.When the chiller is decided to turn off, compressor load of the compressor is changed to minimum load positionby changing magnetic valve 1 and turning off magnetic valve 2 and magnetic valve 3. After the delay for shut-down, the compressor is stopped. When the compressor is stopped, the water pumps will still run for a periodin order to protect the compressor from frequent restart or withdraw latent heat from evaporator of chiller.

2. Adaptive chiller control and higher level protection.The latest chiller control technologies provide enhanced operations of the chiller. The chiller control system isbased on recent PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technology. Because the PLC is designed to be compati-ble with several electromagnetic interference and also compatible with severe ambient conditions, the unit hasreliable controllability in any conditions. The adaptive chiller control is designed to operate the unit to withstand severe conditions and maintain itsoperation. Good examples are capacity override controls in case of high chilled water temperature.Along with the adaptive control, the control also provides higher level protection through multiple protectivedevices. For example triple protective devices are used for the detection of abnormal oil circulation. The controlsystem continues to monitor the hazardous conditions of the unit, and shutdown the unit to protect the unitsafely when any condition meets safety limit.

3. Rich human machine interfaceMenu structure of HMI machine is indicated in picture. It consists of 7 menus about User interface. HMI istouch screen, and user can move to the menu which user wants, if user clicks the menu item with his hand. UserSetting, Parameter Setting and Function Setting of menu limit is accessed by certification code system.

4. Seamless power supply monitoringSuperior power supply monitoring function of the control system is enabled by protective function against highvoltage, low voltage, power loss, phase reverse, and phase imbalance. The superior function of safe power sup-ply to the unit is provided as standard.

5. Standard wye-delta start type and optional soft start typeThe wye-delta start provides reduced starting current by 1/3. The LGE chiller is equipped with the wye-deltastart of the compressor. Optionally, soft start type shall be provided for soft start of the compressor by linearvoltage increase.

6. Standard MODBUS connectivity and optional BACnet and LonWorks connectivity.The control system of the LGE chiller provides measure to be integrated in modern BMS system seamlessly.Because the control system provides MODBUS connectivity by standard, no additional cost for the BMS integra-tion is needed for the system integration based on the MODBUS. Specially, BACnet or LonWorks can be appliedto the system on the request of customer as option.

7. Versatile electric and control options satisfying customer’s requirements.Customer can have various option for the electric and control system.

For example:(1) Standard terminal block with dual point power connection and no capacitor for power correction.(2) Circuit breakers with single point power connection and capacitor for power correction.(3) Unit-mounted non-fused disconnect switch with circuit breaker and dual point power connection with no

capacitor for power correction.

These all options are factory installed as per customer requirement.Please refer table below for more options.

17. Guide Specifications

1. General• LG RCWW series are microprocessor controlled, twin-screw compressor, water-cooled, liquid chillers. • Each RCWW series chiller is factory-assembled including compressor, evaporator, condenser, and control

box.• The initial charge of refrigerant HFC-134a and oil will be supplied for all units.• Chillers shall be rated in accordance with ARI Standard 550/590.• Chillers shall be evacuated and fully charged with refrigerant and oil, and shall be factory operational run

tested.

2. Equipment2.01 Application range • This specification is applied to all the models of water cooled screw chillers RCWW which is made and sold

by LG Electronics Co.

2.02 General structure • Chiller is all in one and is made with convenient structure for installation, operation and maintenance man-

agement and also compact to minimize the installation area.

2.03 Screw compressor • Semi-hermetic screw compressor uses environment friendly refrigerant,R134a (HFC series).• Motor is 3 phase and semi-hermetic type. • Apparatus for supplying oil is operated by the pressure difference of high and low pressure, it has oil filter

and oil heater in it to minimize oil dilution.• It has the structure to recover oil from discharged gas by built in oil separator.• Capacity control is stepless control by slide valve operation through electric valve open-close which senses

chilled water outlet temperature. • For protecting compressor, PTC sensor is installed which is able to sense motor temperature.• Check valve is installed at refrigerant discharge outlet to prevent the compressor from the backward flow of

refrigerant gas when chiller stops.• Compressor has a built-in motor to prevent refrigerant leakage.• The rotor housing is made of high strength gray cast iron FC-25.

2.04 Evaporator• Evaporator is (flooded) shell & tube type and made with carbon steel. Also it has tube changeable structure.• To increase the efficiency of evaporator, it has the structure to spray refrigerant liquid on heat exchanger tube

surface.• It has the structure which is easy to be disassembled, because water box cover is attached and fixed with bolt

& nut for maintenance and washing of inner tube.• Safety valve which spouts refrigerant of evaporator is installed to protect chiller in case when temperature

increases too much because of fire.• Tube is phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has over 99.9% purity and no joint, outside of it is

attached to special shape fin, inside of it has inner grooved tube or equivalent product.• Anti-freezing switch is installed at chilled water outlet to prevent it from being frozen and burst by chilled

water flow stopping, chilled water temperature decreasing, and drain plug, air bent plug are at body.

• Evaporator is covered with thermal insulation materials for dew condensation prevention and thermal insu-lation.

• Design pressure for shell is 300psig(2.1MPa).• Design working pressure for tube line is 150psig(1.0MPa) or 300psig(optional).• The evaporator and economizer are insulated with 3/4inch(19mm) insulation(K=0.26).

2.05 Condenser• High efficiency heat exchanger of Horizontal shell & tube type is used.• It has structure which is easy to be disassembled, because water box cover is attached and fixed with Bolt &

Nut for maintenance and washing of inner Tube after condenser installation.• Condenser inner pressure test is done at 3.3MPa pressure and there should not be any leakage, change or

any malfunction.• Tube is phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has over 99.9% purity and no joint, outside of it is

attached to special shape fin, inside of it has inner grooved tube or equivalent product.• Safety valve is installed to protect the chiller by spurting the refrigerant of condenser when the temperature

increases too much because of fire and outlet stop valve for Pump- Down the refrigerant when operationstop.

2.06 Expansion device• Expansion devices are installed between compressor and evaporator to enable refrigerant to be evaporated

in cooler by reducing pressure (throttling).• Ejector type is applied to increase the durability of product.

2.07 Oil separator• Oil heater is installed inside of oil separator to maintain proper oil temperature, at the same time to separate

refrigerant from oil.• Oil which is supplied to compressor is operated by the difference of high and low pressure without extra oil

pump.• Oil separator has a sight glass to enable operator to check the oil level.

2.08 Economizer, Flash gas tank• Economizer is installed to increase efficiency of refrigeration cycle. • Refrigerant passed through the condenser is separated to refrigerant liquid and flash gas in the economizer.• Refrigerant liquid is sent to evaporator and flash gas is sent to compressor inlet to enhance the chiller per-

formance.• Economizer does not have any driving part; it has the structure to increase the chiller performance

2.09 Safety devices• Proper oil circulation – Triple protection of oil flow switch, oil level switch and differential pressure switch.• Normal refrigerant pressure switch – High pressure switch and low pressure switch.• Temperature check – Sensing overheat of compressor discharge temperature, sensing overheat of compres-

sor motor wire, and anti-freezing switch.• Chilled water flow – Chilled water flow switch.• Voltage and current – Voltage monitoring system, compressor over-current breaker (compressor OCR).

2.10 Spray ejector for oil return• Spray ejector which does not really need extra energy for consumption, recovers the oil mixed with refriger-

ant for supplying to the compressor.

2.11 Auto controls• Chiller has its own auto control function; also component parts for auto control shall be installed in an extra

control panel and power panel.• Control panel and power panel shall be designed to satisfy waterproof class IP54.• Component parts for auto control are installed in the control panel and power panel, controller and power

supply device are in the control panel and fan, electric contactor for controlling compressor and 3 phasepower related device are in the power panel.

• Indicator which indicates supply of control power, stop switch for emergency and the control power’sON/OFF switch shall be installed in the control panel.

• The PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is applied to control the chiller enhances the chiller performanceand through HMI (Human Machine Interface) that has touch screen LCD, it aids user interface and the func-tion of it contains these below.- Chiller ON/OFF- Detect the sensor of chiller and indicate operation information- Indicate malfunction occurrence and history- Input and indicate the set temperature and user setting value- Input and indicate control setting and service setting value

• Temperature sensor information of chiller is provided through HMI, which contains the following:- Chilled water inlet temperature- Chilled water outlet temperature- Compressor outlet refrigerant temperature- Condenser water inlet temperature- Condenser water outlet refrigerant temperature

• PLC provides MODBUS RTU communication function; especially Lon Works or BACnet can be applied to thesystem on the request of customer by installing exterior type translator.

• Power panel contains electric contactor for compressor and over load relay. Electric contactor for compressoris made to minimize the running current of compressor through Y-start.

• Power panel contains electric contactor and over-load relay for each condenser fan.• Power panel contains power monitoring device to detect power supply condition, and power monitoring

device has over 5 detecting function including reverse voltage, over voltage, low voltage, open-phase, and novoltage.

• Auto control system of chiller contains the following functions: - It performs fan and compressor ON/OFF function and several solenoid valve controlling.- It provides interlock point of contact for controlling chilled water pump.- It controls refrigerant volume through the condition of compressor operation and slide valve of compressor

for achieving chilled water outlet setting temperature.- When chilled water outlet temperature and condenser outlet refrigerant temperature is high, limit the com-

pressor operation to prevent malfunction.- Keep proper pressure of condenser through fan control by condenser outlet temperature.

2.12 Refrigerant piping• Ref. piping is made with phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has no joint and its purity over

99.9%, and is installed to for smooth flow of refrigerant between each component.• Install check valve at compressor discharge side not to reverse the discharged refrigerant.• Install filter dryer at pipe to absorb the moisture from inner side of pipe and filter the alien substance.• From expansion valve to evaporator pipe has insulation to prevent flash gas occurrence, also to prevent dew

condensation on pipe surface.• When discharged gas temperature is abnormal, electric valve is operated and protect a compressor by con-

necting the liquid refrigerant to suction pipe of compressor (liquid injection pipe).• After test, vacuum is done so that there shall be no moisture inside.

3. Other • Chiller is made after getting approval on everything about production from ordering company.

About thing that is not in this specification, discuss it with ordering company and get approval.
