THE BIG

QUESTION: DO

WE WANT A

CLEANER AND

GREENER

?

SPECIAL REPORT BY

CHILDREN’S CHOICE

REPORTERS.

afeguarding the Earth by looking after

the environment has never been more

in the news.

Our school has helped highlight some of

the problems. As reported in Children’s

Choice pupils Aaron, Harvey and Zander scooped

up a crisp packet dating back to 1982 on a school

litter pick. It could have been there forever! We

have also highlighted the problem of dog fouling

with Year 6s campaigning to get something done

about it.

For this issue we are looking at recycling

and how plastic and other materials

pollute the planet.

Our Children’s Choice survey asked pupils

a series of questions aimed at finding out

what they know about this key issue.

Question 1: How long does it take for a

plastic bottle to completely degrade

(decay or disappear).

a) 1 year; b) up to 1,000 years.

Question 2: One group says people can

help by picking up three pieces of rubbish

the next time they go to the seaside. Do

you think this would help keep beaches

clean? Yes/No.

Question 3: How much plastic is

dumped in the sea every minute?

a) Enough to fill a rucksack. b)

Enough to fill a lorry.

Question 4: How many plastic bottles are

recycled around the world?

a) 7 per cent. b) 100 per cent.

Survey organised by Grace and

Hollie

e first asked children how

long does it take for a plastic bottle to

completely degrade? More than HALF

thought it would happen in one year.

In fact, it takes up to 1,000 YEARS.

Secondly, Children’s Choice asked if

pupils thought picking up three pieces

of rubbish on seaside trips was a

good idea. Nearly everyone said yes

(one student said no because you

went to the seaside to have fun) and

gave very interesting reasons for

helping out.

Charlotte, Maddy, Evie, Jack, Tom

Meg, Emily and Lottie said plastic

was a danger to animals; Holly added

that litter was unsightly in holiday

areas; Summer said it was important

to save sea creatures at risk from

swallowing plastic; Esme thought it

was important to help clean up areas;

Emily believes that people could be

hurt from rubbish carelessly thrown

away; Nia was all for keeping

beaches clean for playing and

swimming; Deejay said that fish

would die from swallowing plastic

items.

Our next question concerned the amount

of plastic dumped in the sea every

MINUTE. All but two of the pupils

surveyed knew that it was enough to fill

a lorry. Enough to FILL A LORRY. EVERY

MINUTE!

The survey team’s last question asked

how many plastic bottles are recycled

around the world. Again, lots of children

thought it was 100 per cent.

Congratulations to those who said it is

only 7 per cent, the correct answer.

So, to answer our question, we do want a

cleaner and greener planet and know

quite a lot about how it can be achieved.

CHILDREN’S CHOICE REPORTERS DON’T

JUST TALK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT –

WE HELP CLEAN IT UP!

Reporters noticed there was rubbish on

the school field; after pulling on their

protective gloves the fabulous five got to

work clearing up. Every little bit helps.

ALWAYS READY TO HELP

A GOOD CAUSE.

ne of our pupils has recently undergone

surgery to cure his epilepsy so our latest

non-uniform day raised money for the

Epilepsy Society, Ronald McDonald House and

Birmingham Children’s Hospital. As the student is

a keen Arsenal fan lots of us came in wearing

something red.
